F1 Lewis Hamilton will race for McLaren in 2007

Formula 1 news, races, teams, drivers, technology, strategy, and discussion.
On the short term DLR would have been the better choice. But who knows...
Hamilton is used to be no.1, but he's the student and had better learn fast from the maestro Alonso.

Until his driving shows me otherwise, this is a publicity stunt in my opinion. F1 needs publicity and a new audience. Mclaren is reportedly hugely in debt according to one source I read at the end of the '06 season.

Why is Hamilton at Mclaren? They have a policy that does not allow drivers to do personal endorsements. As the first black driver, he could make millions. Tiger Woods got more endorsement money when he turned pro than any other golfer in history. I guess, Mclaren can relax the rules for Hamilton since Ron Dennis says he as good as any driver except FA and KR.

Like I said before, Hamilton is good but for I do think that his rival from last year Piquet, Jr. is better. Jr ran into the same problems that raikonnen runs into every year...his car broke down but when his car wasn't breaking down he was all over hamilton. I honestly don't think that Hamilton is better than DLR...but let's see if he can prove me wrong but in any case, I'm jumping ship to the Ferrari camp because that's where Kimi is.

Hamilton not afraid of Alonso challenge

McLaren's new-signing Lewis Hamilton says he has got no qualms about racing alongside Fernando Alonso in his debut Formula One season.

Hamilton has been handed a golden chance to impress in 2007 by the team who have overseen his career for the past nine years. But he will face the unenviable task of racing against double world champion Alonso in exactly the same machinery.

Team boss Ron Dennis has already admitted that coping with Alonso will be one of Hamilton's biggest tasks, but the GP2 champion says he is actually going to relish the opportunity to compare himself with, and learn from, the Spaniard.

"In the first year it is going to be extremely tough, especially being alongside Fernando Alonso," said Hamilton. "But I am young, I am here to learn and I am dedicated to doing the best job I can. I will be working as hard as possible on and off track to get up to speed.

"Having the best driver alongside me is going to be the best position to be in. Having a two-time world champion, who is very experienced, very talented and a few years older than me, is great.

"He can give a lot to the team and I will be able to learn from him. I am looking forward to the challenge. I am ready for it and looking forward to the first race."

Dennis has made it clear that he does not want Hamilton to get too engrossed in trying to beat Alonso, and thinks the most important thing is for the youngster to show steady progress over the first part of the campaign.

"He should not be competing against his teammate, and he will have that as an advantage," said Dennis. "He doesn't have to be too obsessed by the competition, and can just focus on his own performance.

"As long as he is making constant progress in the first few races then he will be given time to blossom."

In terms of his realistic ambitions for the year, Hamilton has admitted that he is not going into F1 simply to make the numbers up - he wants to win. But he has vowed to take a considered approach to getting the job done.

"I think it is fair to say that McLaren are in it to win," he explained. "I am certain that they are going to have a car that is capable of running in the top three next year.

"I think with Alonso's input, the car is gong to be good next year, and we will all be very surprised. For me, I have just got to take it slow, take my time and enjoy the moment and learn as much as I can from Alonso.

"But I think as a target I would have to say like any driver – winning. You cannot say my target is to finish in 10th place. I race to win, so my target is to win a race at some point.

"Whether that is next season or the year after, I cannot say. Fingers crossed I will be able to get some good points for the team anyway."

Hamilton hits big time but no millions yet
Saturday 25 November at 14:25 : British rookie Lewis Hamilton will race for one of F1's top teams next year and have a world champion for a teammate, but he will not become an instant millionaire.

London based newspaper 'The Times' says the 21-year-old McLaren racer, to be one of four Britons on the grid next year, will earn about $675,000 in 2007.

However, while the terms of his contract with the Woking based team are basically unknown, it is expected that Hamilton could add up to $250,000 per race to his income with performance bonuses.

"Hamilton's salary could then rise to about $1.3m and then up to $3.8m in year three. From then, a successful career could net him up to $13.5m a year or more," the newspaper wrote.

Hamilton, 21, explained on Friday that he was told by Ron Dennis that he had secured the coveted drive on September 30 -- before the 2006 formula one season had finished and in the midst of speculation that Pedro de la Rosa or Gary Paffett might get the job.

Another British newspaper, The Guardian, quoted Dennis as saying that he thinks Hamilton is already as good as any driver in F1 with the exception of Fernando Alonso or Kimi Raikkonen.

He said: "I am distinctly unimpressed with the majority of drivers currently involved in formula one."

This is a very bold move, could be stupid as well. When there was talk about letting Lewis drive in Brazil Ron Dennis brought up a very good point. His fitness! A fellow GP2 driver of Lewis's could only manage 13 laps in brazil because of the huge forces on the neck. He might've been able to do more if the track ran clockwise but still...
Untill I see Lewis prove himself to be in good shape I think this is a bad move. I don't doubt his speed, but his ability to maintain it throughout an entire race.

True, I've read that Lewis is undergoing special training.
F1 driver are unique in motorsport, the only ones undergoing similar G forces are astronauts.

Hamilton has troubled start to testing

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, November 28th 2006, 10:36 GMT

Lewis HamiltonLewis Hamilton's career as a Formula One race driver got off to a disappointing start on Tuesday when his McLaren ground to a halt after just a few laps of testing.

The young Briton, who was confirmed as Fernando Alonso's teammate on Friday, stopped at the first corner of the Circuit de Catalunya with a suspected mechanical problem.

The issue was quickly rectified, however, and Hamilton has resumed running.

Hamilton is currently running alongside Pedro de la Rosa, but there are mounting suggestions that former world champion Mika Hakkinen may test for the team this week.

Eight teams have joined the opening day of winter testing. As well as McLaren, Renault are represented by Nelson Piquet Jr. and Heikki Kovalainen, Ferrari have Luca Badoer and Felipe Massa while Honda are using Rubens Barrichello and James Rossiter.

Honda's Jenson Button, who has been forced to skip the test so as not to aggravate his injured ribs, is still present to oversee proceedings.

Mark Webber is getting his first taste of Red Bull Racing machinery alongside David Coulthard, while Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson is making his first appearance as their race driver.

BMW-Sauber are using their race drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, as are Scuderia Toro Rosso who have Scott Speed and Vitantonio Liuzzi on board.

I just did a background check on Hamilton and have found out that he has a very good background. Looking at his previous victories he is a very good driver which is more than ready to take it to the next level and jump on the F1 wagon.
BTW when does 2007 season begin?

March 2007;)

Can't wait:eek:

C'mon Lewis, make me proud and don't force me to remove you from my avatar:D
