New GL320 CDI is the second GL owned by Hamilton

McLaren racing star Lewis Hamilton is just one GP away from possibly writing himself into the history books as the youngest-ever F1 champion, but when he’s not carving up the race track the 23-year-old-Brit is usually driving a much slower vehicle – a diesel SUV in fact.

The vehicle is the Mercedes Benz GL320 CDI and it is the second GL SUV owned by Hamilton. It features a 3.0L V6 common-rail diesel engine with 224hp (167kW) and 276lb-ft (510Nm) of torque. His F1 car, on the other hand, has a 2.4L V8 engine with more than 800hp (596kW) and a 19,000-plus rpm limit.

Explaining his choice of road-going vehicle, Lewis said: “At the track I always drive on the limit, but on public roads I like to relax, kick back and cruise. The GL’s perfect for that – it’s got plenty of space for all my kit, a brilliant sound system, and the high driving position gives me a clear view of the road ahead. It’s just about the most comfortable road car I’ve driven.”

He also boasted about the car’s extras such as the metallic black paint with matching leather, privacy glass, and “awesome” 21in AMG wheels.

Hamilton may be able to add another model to his collection if he wins the F1 championship at next month’s Brazilian GP. After taking an interest in one of only five McLaren F1 LM supercars in the McLaren factory more than ten years ago, team boss Ron Dennis promised the car to him if he wins the drivers’ championship and McLaren is crowned constructors' champion.

Interestingly, Fernando Alonso was given an ultra-rare Mercedes-McLaren 722 as his personal car during his short stay at the Mercedes-backed team last year.

Can't he afford the AMG version? :D I bet he wanted a Cayenne Turbo S intead but that woulnt look good for MB ;)

Hell he could have gotten a AMG CL, S, SL, E, CLS, C or even a G55 compared to a regular GL. If I drove for Mercedes I'd have a custom Maybach 57S or SLR Roadster, something with some pop.

Good choice I have driven that new GL my self
and it is a very comfortable crusie-car with enough power
the most chill about the car is it's looks and size.

Still If I had all those money :D...

The F1 LM is in safe hands for now kiddo :D

^^
Lol, he's probably longing for that one. Ron better hold up his side of the bet.

Actually MB and Porsche have a very good relationship just look at the rims on the SL63 and 997TT:D. Secondly when Hamilton was in LA on a short holiday earlier this year, he spent his time over there in a TechArt Cayman which he chose over a done up CL.

Wow!! Not even a GL 420 CDI - just the 320 CDI one!! But why not - definitely a great cruiser and I can remember the Top Gear episode, when he drove around the track and said, that he loves to cruise around. :D But I hope, that it is not the GL at the photo - that one doesn't even have Bi-Xenon lights. :D

I still have a very very hard time believe he has 1 car. Plus remember when his dad crashed that CGT (although I don't think that was even his). Where's the rest of your fleet Hamilton?

Which varient is his earlier GL?

I too driven the GL420 CDI & its a awesome SUV. I love it.:usa7uh:

One person, one car. Sounds pretty reasonable.

Times are really changing. Today is all about fuel economy and etc... He chose an excellent car and a diesel car is good publicity for him and MB.

He could have bought every AMG model they make :eusa_doh:

Didn't he just invest $35 million into a luxury hotel/condos in the Caribbean?

He couldn't handle the 800nm. :D

Seriously though, every road going car must be so boring to F1 drivers. So what's the point of going out and buying a sports car.

I think you nailed it.

The 420cdi was just as terribly slow and underpowered as the 320cdi for him. Compared to an F1, a SL65 Black is heavy, slow and boring, so why bothering? He chose the comfort. And it makes some good advertisement for MB that Lewis drives a GL 320cdi Bluetec! So everything makes sense. And he soon will have a MCLaren F1 GTR, so he will have the best sportscar ever made!

I would have taken the GL420 CDI....I've driven that can one time, and it was truly amazing. I loved it :D

Which is exactly why they gave it to him :)

Who said he doesn't like AMGs. The only way to floss in California is in a convertible and he went all the way with a black SL63. check out the cars in the background!

I know :D That was taken in Beverly Hills, actually :)

Edit: I was replying to Merc1's comment that Hamilton could have had any AMG he wanted. I extended it to say he could have every AMG if he wanted.

Evidence that Lewis Hamilton is a sensible and down-to-earth guy. He could easily afford an after-market modification where they shoehorn a V12 Biturbo from the '65 AMG models into the GL body - but he's being sensible. Respect. :eusa_clap

The GL320 CDI would be my choice too! :D
