French police catch Hamilton speeding.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton was caught speeding on a French highway last Sunday afternoon.

The 22-year-old rookie was clocked by radar on the A26 motorway, linking the towns of Calais and Reims, at 196kmh at the wheel of a Mercedes CLK, the news agency EFE reported.

It is claimed that French police suspended the Briton's license privileges for a period of one month and fined him 600 euros.

The car was also confiscated, but police gave Hamilton a lift to his hotel, the reports added.

The policemen said Hamilton was cooperative and very courteous.

"He admitted the offence immediately and was really very polite," the police spokesman said, adding that Hamilton had explained in his defence that the motorway was "very clear" at the time.


"It's a section of motorway which is used regularly by foreigners who have a tendency to speed," he added.

"McLaren were made aware that Lewis was stopped for speeding in France whilst driving in a private capacity. We understand he has received a mandatory fine and suspension from driving in France for one month," a McLaren spokesperson declared.

I guess Shumacher isn't the only F1 driver in a rush these days. The car Hamilton pushed to the limit was a CLK 63 AMG. What sucks even more for him is that he wasn't allowed to drive the car after he was busted, the police drove him back to his hotel.

I seem to remember Button got caught speeding in France a few years ago in a 330d doing 143mph, and when he was caught, BMW were amazed because the 330d couldn't go that fast.

To be honest Hamilton going at 125mph is probably safer than any of us driving at 80, 90mph just because he's go so much experience driving at those speeds and very fast reactions, but the law is the law I suppose!
