The 2006-2010 Lamborghini Murcielago Coupe and Roadster, 2007-2009 Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe, Spyder and Super Leggera and the 2007-2011 Bentley Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur are affected. Lamborghini and Bentley are both owned by Volkswagen Group and share some common parts within the company. A total of 469 Continental, 263 Gallardo and 404 Murcielago models are included.
The issue started with Bentley, according to the filings, when an overseas customer reported missing brake screws in May 2011. Bentley said it began to investigate when three more incidents were reported in Europe and the Middle East. While the automaker found that braking performance was only reduced when eight of the 10 screws went missing, it decided not to issue a recall as the "issue would be detected during routine maintenance." However, in August of this year, more reports rolled in and the automaker decided to stage a recall.
Lamborghini did not specify if any of its cars had reported issues, but both automakers said they did not know of any report where more than three screws went missing and that there were no related injuries or accidents.
This month dealers are replacing the brake screws on all rotors with a new material that is resistant to "stress corrosion cracking" (owners should have already received notice). Owners can call Bentley at 1-800-777-6923 or Lamborghini at 1-866-681-6276.
In September 2012, Lamborghini recalled 1,491 Gallardo Coupe and Spyder models to fix pipes that could leak power-steering fluid onto a hot engine and cause a fire.
