Jaguar shows off their new virtual windscreen

Systems could eventually be used on production models
Jaguar Land Rover has introduced their new Virtual Windscreen system that promises to improve driving on the road and track.

The system turns the entire windscreen into a huge display by projecting images onto it to highlight hazards, the speed limit and navigation information. Jaguar goes on to say the system could have track-oriented display to show a variety of things including:

  • A ghost car of your car or another car from a previous lap
  • Virtual cones for driver training
  • Virtual racing lines to show you where to drive and when to brake
The company is also developing of a host of other systems including a 3D instrument cluster, virtual rearview mirrors and a gesture control system which could enable users to control everything from the sunblinds to the rear wiper without touching anything.

According to Jaguar Land Rover Director of Research and Technology Dr Wolfgang Epple, "We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience."

I think this is a great idea and I reckon in future will replace the navigation screens currently used.

Pretty impressive, especially I like the fact it shows arrows for guiding you while navigating to a place and also gives visible warnings for distance to car in front and side lane assist. This HUD from BMW does it only cover the area in front of the drivers view or the entire screen?

Yes. The 7er ushers in the next generation of BMW ConnectedDrive of which some features where shown in the Vision ConnectedDrive Concept from 2011. Which we did announce will appear in a few years and now we are upon that moment.

Virtual Sat-Nav would be brilliant if it makes production because most (myself included) only use them on holiday where you are driving mostly on unfamiliar roads and this type of guidance would be fantastic.

It will help alot during night time driving especially so you can concentrate looking forward and the system also provides visible warnings for some road hazards that wont be clear on a dark road.
