Interview with Norbert Reithofer

The last answer is great! :D

We are a german company. I hope, the "Leipziger" are not upset: We are a bavarian company, actually. We have still deep roots in this country. Only when we will operate successful in this country, we will have international success.
Success and response belong together.

SZ: Audi is going to be sporty. That is very dangerous for BMW!

Reithofer: Competition is good for business. The competition between Mercedes and BMW benefited for both companies. Mercedes wanted to be better then BMW and BMW wanted to be better then Mercedes.

I think what's really "dangerous" to BMW (more or less) is the fact that BMW has reached it's max as far as brand growth, Audi on the other hand is just beginning to grow, so they might have to come up w/ newer and more original ideas to retain customers, which really shouldn't take much for them.

The most interesting stuff:

1.) BMW AG will still grow (sales, revenues, profit, ...). There is a plan sales in 2010 will hit 1,6 million units (BMW, MINI, RR).

2.) There is a plan to increase productivity / efficiency for 5% a year in the next 5-year period! Eg. make production & purchasing even more effecient!

(Comment: now you know why Reithofer - a production specialist - was named a CEO, and Draeger - a purchasing specialist - named a Chief of Development).

3.) There is no plan & no need for job-cutting.

3.) Products will be developed in a way to be able to get more variations out of same platform / model (eg. new 1er / 2er variations).

4.) BMW will issue more new models, and more quickly then before.

(Comment: Reithofer actually admitted previous board leading by Panke introduced not enough new models - or issued them too slowly!)

5.) MB is still a main competitor, but also Audi is taken seriously in Europe & Asia, and Lexus in USA.

6.) BMW AG will retain most production facilities in Germany. New facilities will follow the markets (building new plants where the biggest markets for specific models are).

7.) Also after sales services very important for the future growth.

8.) BMW will not stand still, but react to competition. Competition is good, and makes products & company better.

9.) BMW will follow EfficientDynamics philosophy. Also a Hybrid will be offered in the near future (USA), but together with ultra-efficient combustion engines (eg. with HPI direct injection, Stop &Go system, Brake Energy re-generator).

10.) Reithofer thinks good management has to satisfy 3 parties equally: customers, shareholders, and employees. And he will strive to follow this philosophy.

I like that BMW is always on top of its game, not slacking in any way when faced up to competition. That's probably why they have been so successful, and will continue to be in the future.

Exactly!

Its so hard when you're number 1 because arrogance and complacency can easily creep into the organization.

I hope BMW doesn't take anything for granted because Audi, Lexus and MB have them firmly in their sights.

It seems that Reithofer is meticulous when it comes to efficiency. As a CEO, he's very conscious about controlling costs, but he has the engineering expertise to know how far to control them without sacrificing product quality. His manufacturing background has taught him that efficiency and productivity are key to getting the results.

Hey EnI, in your knowledge, and from what you've heard, who are the "car guys" in the BMW board?

4.) BMW will issue more new models, and more quickly then before.

thank you lord..that decision couldnt came early enough..
audi need to take that decesion to

OMG, I still don't know all MB models, and now with BMW making even more new models I will be even worse... :eusa_doh:

Interesting points:

  • EfficientDynamics solutions will soon find a way into BMW SAVs and other models in BMW product portfolio (in max 2 years)
  • BMW very determined to lower fuel consumption & gas emissions in BMW Group vehicles without compromising the performance
  • BMW to offer mild hybrids in the near future (also diesel hybrids very possible!) in various models
  • SCR Clean Diesel will be offered in 2008 (US market)
  • 1er model family, and MINI model family will grow further (new models on the way)
  • mini-SAV (X1) possible (seriously considered)
  • RFK coming soon, mini-RFK possible (decision independent from RFK market success - meaning: decision for mini-RFK will be made before RFK hits the showrooms)
  • BMW brand needs a "brandshaper" product - a low-volume super-sports car BMW already had in the past (M1 and Z8), and such car will be offered in the near future
