Ever since Infiniti trademarked "G37" last year, car watchers have been waiting for the new badge's manifestation. Now, the company announced the G37 coupe, and a new EX Concept, will both debut at the New York auto show next month. The '08 G37 coupe is expected to go on sale by year's end, potentially sporting a 3.7-liter version of Nissan's VQ powerplant. Word is, that's the same engine that'll be used in the Nissan Skyline GT-R, minus the twin turbos. – Mike Spinelli

If the current hp/L (306/3.5) ratio is maintained... the new engine should have about 324 hp.

Enter the rumormill: 500HP Infiniti G37 twin-turbo on tap for 2010

May we first present to you a grain of salt, which you should take with what we're about to say. A comment left on an earlier post today confirming the G37 Coupe's new name led us to the Freshalloy forums where a member had recently posted some tantalizing information.

The Freshalloy forum member relays information he obtained from the owner of his local Nissan/Infiniti dealership that includes not only confirmation of the new G37 name four days before today's official announcement, but also speculation that the larger engine will produce 325 horsepower "out of the box". On a follow up visit, the forum member learned that a possible 330-hp variant of the G37 is also currently being tested at sea level. Finally, the owner said that the new G37 will be in dealerships this summer around July or August.

The real nugget of speculation that interests us, however, is the possibility that Infiniti will produce an all-wheel drive, twin-turbocharged version of the G37 in 2010 that will produce 500 horsepower. Such a car sounds a lot like the Nissan GT-R, the first production Skyline ever to be sold in the U.S. Even though this news come from a forum post written by a guy who talked to some dealer, and its validity can in no way be confirmed at this time, we have to admit that it makes sense to us.

We're well aware that Infiniti dealers were not happy when one Carlos Ghosn announced the GT-R would be badged a Nissan, so an ultra high-performance version of the G37 is one relatively easy way to appease those dealers. We also presume that the G37 Coupe and GT-R will share a good deal of hardware, which makes us wonder if the GT-R's powerplant will turn out to be a twin-turbo version of the G37's 3.7L VQ V6, rather than the 3.5L version. That would certainly explain the blistering lap times a prototype was turning at Laguna Seca last month.

Oh yeah, the dealer is expecting a G37 convertible in 2009. You may now exit the rumormill.

New York Preview: Infiniti G37 Coupe revealed ahead of schedule

With the New York Auto Show only a couple weeks away, the embargos had to begin to break any day now. Road and Track started things off by releasing its May issue online early with a single of the new Infiniti G37 and a short driving impression. Edmunds Inside Line and Automobile smelled blood, and immediately opened the flood gates revealing everything they knew about Infiniti's new G Coupe. These news outlets were apparently invited to a sneak preview of the G37 at Nissan's test facility in Arizona last month, and while Infiniti likely set strict embargoes on publishing pictures and driving impressions of the new model, all it takes is one hole in the dam to start a deluge.

The full view of the G37 is stunning, with familiar cues from the G35 Sedan mingled with coupe-specific cues like a large front intake and fast profile. The headlights peel back into the front fenders the G37 an even more imposing presence than the current G35 coupe.

The already excellent 3.5L V6 from the G35 Sedan gets bored out by 4.6mm to reach 3.7 liters, and the compression is increased to 11.0:1 to create some outstanding power numbers. An estimated 330 hp and 270 lb-ft will move the 3,682 lb coupe, and the drive should be much improved with 36-percent stiffer underpinnings than the G35 coupe. Stopping power is also quite impressive, with 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors.

Infinity showed the world it was no pushover in the entry luxury market with its first-generation G35 coupe, and we think the great looks and impressive power numbers of the all-new G37 may put Infinity at the front of the pack. Of course, the BMW 335i coupe leads the pack at the moment while weighing less and putting up bigger torque numbers with its twin-turbo inline-six, so we'll reserve judgment on whether or not the G37 wins by a nose until we've had the chance to drive it.

I think the power is nice... and the performance should be good. The 335i will have its hand full.

But I bet you anything this thing will guzzle way more gas than the 335i.

Aad although I am a huge fan of the current G35 coupe... i can't say I like the styling too much. It's not ugly... but a little too Nissan-ish IMO.

The styling leaves me cold, a big letdown for me. I expected something edgier not just a melted sedan with 2 less doors. The first generation looks better to me. As with any new car intro, I'll wait until I can see it in person before making final judgement.

I gotta see it in person because the pics make it look like the new sedan minus 2 doors with a twinge of being a warmed over version of the previous Coupe, especially at the rear.

The shoulder line is quite sexy, but i havent fallen in love with the front or rear yet...

No doubt, it's an awesome coupe :usa7uh: ...!

She's gonna steal a lot of sales from Nissan GT-R though :eusa_thin ...!

I really like that side profile. Not as much as those of the Germans but still. Infiniti might soon beat Lexus as my favorite Japanese luxury car make.

2008 Infiniti G37: On the Dyno - Video and Charts.

The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is the first car to use Nissan's new 3.7-liter V-6. Infiniti still hasn't finalized peak output ratings, but estimates that the engine makes 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque.
The new VQ37VHR engine, as it's called, is the first V-6 sold in the USA to use infinitely variable valve timing in place of a throttle. This system, called VVEL, is the second such system on the market -- BMW's Valvetronic was the first.
We discussed the new engine in depth in previous articles on the G37 (see related links below) so let's cut right to the chase: The new 3.7-liter is only 5.6 percent larger than the old engine, but made almost 22 percent more power on a chassis dynamometer.
We tested the 2007 G35 Coupe 6MT on the same dyno a few months back. When attached to the six-speed manual transmission, its 3.5-liter is rated at 293 hp @ 6400 rpm and 258 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm. Its power peak is very close to the 6600-rpm fuel cutoff - this is an engine that loves to rev. Looking at the dyno chart, you can see that it comes alive just over 2000 rpm and produces a fairly constant amount of torque until just over 5000 rpm. Torque (and the corresponding push in your rear) drops off only slightly, as the engine is still producing over 85% of its peak torque at redline. Impressive indeed.
