How much do after market wheels help in terms of speed wise?

The answer is simple. It depends:

  • Will the tyre width be changed?
  • Will the outer wheel diameter be altered?
  • Will the unsprung weight be lowered or increased?
Increasing the tyre width, usually has bad effects on both acceleration and top speed. Altering the outer wheel diameter also creates problems. Finally, reducing the unsprung weight is a good thing for handling.

It's mostly about how close to a slick the tire is and how soft/hard the compound is :)
The tire walls are also important :)

The bigger the wheel, the worse the performance is - at least this is what I've learnt from German tests. Sometimes a stock car with stock 19-inch wheels is faster than its tuned version with more power and 20-21-inch wheels.

This a good example:
ABT-tuned Audi Q5 TDi with 20- and 22-inch-wheels:
  • GPS-Vmax.: 230 / 226 km/h
  • 0-100 km/h: 6,8 s / 6,9 s
  • 0-160 km/h: 17,2 s / 17,4 s
  • 0-200 km/h: 30,5 s / 31,5 s
