Impressed with the handling of my A250

I took my A250 for a drive the other day. My son was on camp and was to represent his school in swimming at the local swim meet. So I had to go and pick him up. Well at nearly 1.5 hours away it gave me a great opportunity to give my 250 a nice fang on some curvaceous roads. Was I impressed, she feels at times like she is on rails. I did hit some corners really very hard. In the past 10,000kms this is the first drive of its kind that I have had. While I'm sure the extra grunt of the 45 would have been awesome for overtaking I don't think it would have made much of a difference to the overall time. I do want to live and am not on a racetrack so I did keep it relatively tame making sure that I could stick to my own lane. But that aside, the 250 really does make overtaking a breeze, it does have a nice amount of pull when you give it a squirt with the left foot.

Anyway really impressed, it was one dirty little beast by the time I got back. So it had a nice 2 hour wash.

Thanks for the impression. How responsive is the gearbox? The gearbox in the car I test drove was a bit hesitant from 1st to 2nd even though it was in sports mode. I know this is an inherit problem with the dual clutch gearboxes but has this been minimized?

Well I've never driven other cars with dual clutch gearboxes. So my comparison is with my Avalon and my Tarago. Both of which are really incomparable. But most of the drive I used Eco, for the times when I needed more response I used Sports on this particular drive.

You may be correct, with the hesitation. Although I do find it is very minimal if at all. The time it takes to reach redline in first is very quick. I'll check it out again, as I'm not 100% sure. I think for speed possibly ECO might be quicker in acceleration anyway. But in sports the car is ready to react to the accelerator much quicker than in ECO.

I think the AMG would handle very differently, due to the different gearbox, suspension set up and AWD.

The a45 would be quicker but at the discomfort of passengers. Sounds like you drive like me, spirited but with safety in mind. You can apply full throttle mid corner in the a45 and rocket out but your passengers and everything else in your car is thrown sideways.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your car.

The A45 is too rough for me, I couldn't drive that everyday ...

While I am looking forward to trying a 45 with the idea of buying one when I've had the 250 for 3 years. I've yet to compare the ride

These days I mostly enjoy the acceleration every now and again a nice quick drive from which I expect to be alive and well after. But usually I drive for economy the l/100km figure weighs on my mind. But no matter how I'm driving at the time just glad I'm doing it in my a250

I have only driven the A180, but that handled pretty much the same way you describe the A250. Very planted.

Personally i haven't driven the A180, but I would assume that the whole A Class should handle very well. I'm sure I would never drive the A250 to its absolute limits even if I was doing track days.

I agree the A250 handling is exceptional but the gearbox is just disappointing @Monster

Plant it in Sports mode and it holds the lower gear far too long and then lurches forward once the gear is selected. Taking off in sports in much the same affair get through the gears and back off and it continues to hold the revs and sounds extremely try hard when you just want it to shift to the next gear after a squirt

Using manual mode I am constantly finding I am choosing the wrong gear for the corner and either bounce off the limiter or too sluggish, god I miss manual cars. It also isn't as instant as I would expect, maybe my assumption of a DSG is from a video game but I just expected it to be better.

Eco is okay but completely devoid of any soul and sounds extremely pedestrian.

That and the fuel economy is so woeful that I actually am trying to drive economically and feel bad for wasting fuel.

The looks mostly make up for it and has motivated me to get my weekend car going again. So that is a bonus

I find that if I'm a bit sedate with the throttle, yes, there is a big delay between 1st and 2nd - I actually have to preempt the gear change and push the paddle earlier than I actually need to change gear. This applies no matter what mode I'm in.

However if I'm going hard, with the accelerator pushed a fair way in, then the 1st to 2nd gear change happens with no delay after pressing the paddle.

I would have to agree with that. I noticed a while ago that if I accelerate and then back off and change the gears the changes did take a while, and were definitely much slower.

Does anyone have issues seeing out of the car? Those AMG sports seats are quite thick and it creates a pretty big blind spot for me.

On a side note those Avalon and Tarago can take a lot of abuse, especially the Avalon, it is quite hilarious when you throw it around without care.

@Monster adjust your side mirrors so you just can't see any of your own car in them. Have a friend walk 360 around the car and note that you never loose them between the three mirrors :)

Interesting discussion on the gearbox. Have to say I don't have the same issues. Eco is sedate if I drive it normally, but it makes for a lovely quite and smooth drive. I guess it also maximizes economy, and the engine has so much low down torque that it carries the tall gearing very well. When it hits a hill etc, mine doesn't hesitate to drop down 2 or 3 gears. All I have to do in Eco mode to get hustling is put my foot down. It'll drop down any number of gears it thinks I need to take off like a scalded cat! It will just take a moment to do it.

Manual gear changes are fast, definitely faster than VWs I've owned and/or driven recently (Mk5, 6 GTi, R32, Tiguan, B7 Passat - yes I have been a bit of a VW tragic over the years). I do agree that Sport mode does hang in there a bit too long, but other than that, it transforms the car. One of the first runs I did through the twisties, I left it in sport mode just to see what it would do. For most of the time it was great (backing off and then accelerating, backing off etc.). Only on the longer in-between straights when accelerating hard, I found that I ran out revs as it wanted to keep near max rather than dropping into next gear, which reduced my top speed. So in these circumstances, I now normally drive in manual mode which works so well for me. I do switch off the ESP too. I find that helps, and while it doesn't completely turn the system off, it does give you a bit more headroom when cornering (gun16, depending on just how hard you are cornering, you may be experiencing the system subtly taking over and modifying your throttle control). Around town I do use Sport mode occasionally. If I'm not too heavy on the throttle it does change up, and again, the backing off and accelerating routine works a treat and I'm always in the right gear to take any evasive action that may be needed.

The other interesting feature that can be misinterpreted with the gearbox is the lag from a standing start. But evidently/allegedly, MB has done this deliberately to stop the shudder, jerkiness that is a common (and misunderstood characteristic) of DSGs when crawling and taking off. Seems MB have opted to set the clutches to take up quickly, rather than slipping as much as VWs do. The result is the slight lag between putting your foot down and the clutch engaging with the engine and driving. All my DSG's shuddered and carried on, but haven't had that at all with the MB, which is probably a good thing from a longevity point too.

But these are just my thoughts guys and probably don't mean squat at the end of the day :notworthy:

Yep I do. Scares the crap out of me every time I have to reverse. Even though I have every imaginable warning device, beepers, cameras etc, I still manged to reverse into my bike the other day that I had stupidly parked behind the car! No damage to either vehicle fortunately!

Very lucky. I never trust my parking sensors completely knowing that they have a 2 to 3 sec delay.
