Computers iMac 24" with the 8800GS

I'm concidering the 24" iMac but i'm worried about graphics performance. Does anyone have the 24" iMac with the 8800GS graphics card? Does it do the trick?

The GS is the weakest of the 8800 line... slowest core & memory speed, lowest memory bandwidth, etc.

I've have a 640MB GTS (second slowest of the line) for over a year now and I can play most games in med- to high-quality details at high resolutions (1600x1200+) without trouble. Although note that I don't play too many first person shooter games.

In any case, don't forget that Nvidia's current line is the 9-series... so you'll be buying old technology.

At this point, if graphics are important to you and you want your new graphic card to last you longer, I recommend getting something with a 9800 card. Also keep in mind that buying newer generation video cards might NOT speed up old games, but will likely be faster with new and upcoming ones.

Siko's tips are wise. Since the the iMac is pretty much non upgradeable you should strive for getting the best graphic card possible since that's what's you're going to be rocking until you replace the computer. If money is somewhat an issue than you shouldn't be too worried about the GPU since it's sufficient for a casual gamer who only play games once or twice a week.

Thanks for the input!

The "8800 GS" is really more of a 8800 GT since it is a Apple specific unit and over seas they dub it as a GT-card (better bandwidth and more memory than the standard GS) and from what i have fund out thus far it still count as a high endish graphics card. My main concern is if there is another card comming up for the iMac that superseds this one?

I have one but I don't play games anymore so I can't help u there. I love it though.

Looking good!

How is does the screen handle reflections?

As you can see i have a giant pair of windows behind my desk but my monitor is set to the lowest brightness. It gets too bright when full. I need a wider/deeper desk cos this thing is so BIG. Awesome though ... very addictive.

Yes, it is one huge piece of equipment!

I will look into this further when I return from my vacation... I might just need one of theese :D

I have read up on this more now and it looks like the 8800GT will do just fine, at least for a while. I'm certain even the slowest company on earth will offer something better than an almost three generations old graphics card in just a while.
