As I predicted quite a few years ago, the future of car infotainment will not be on LED/LCD displays but will be projected onto the cars windscreen.
Hyundai Mobis is making this a reality in 2027.
Hyundai Mobis: all displays on the windshield
Will Hyundai’s windshield soon become a large display?
No more small displays, but all the information directly on the windshield? This could soon be a reality at Hyundai!
As practical as displays in cars may be, there is one major disadvantage: anyone who wants to switch back and forth between the countless displays must constantly avert their gaze from the road. Head-up displays have at least made it possible to navigate safer because the view always remains directed forward.
But the South Korean automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis wants to go one step further in cooperation with the German company Zeiss! Thanks to the "Holographic Windshield Display (Holographic HUD)", displays inside the car will be completely eliminated in the future. Instead, the windshield will function as a large display on whichnavigation, through video calls, to films and games for the passenger. Or to be more precise: a transparent "screen" is installed in front of the windshield onto which all functions are projected. This layer should be invisible and only 0.1 mm thick.
All functions and information are shown directly on the windshield thanks to a transparent display.

This technology is designed to use the lower edge of the windshield, roughly at the same height as head-up displays. However, the Holographic HUD is designed to extend across the entire width of the windshield.
New opportunities for designers
Aside from the safety aspect of this technology, it also opens up new possibilities for car manufacturers when it comes to interior design. Some manufacturers - such as Tesla or Hyundai with the Ioniq 5 or 6 - are aiming for a particularly tidy and minimalist look, which would be even easier to implement without additional displays.
Mass production to start in 2027
It is not clear in which vehicle this innovation will debut. Hyundai Mobis is a supplier for both Hyundai and Kia , so both brands could be considered. All that is known so far is that there is already a prototype and that mass production is planned to start in 2027.
