M6 How many horsepower for the M6?

The BMW M6 is a high-performance version of the 6 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand from 1983 to 2019 (with a hiatus from 1990 to 2004). Introduced in the coupe body style, the M6 was also built in convertible and fastback sedan ('Gran Coupe') body styles for later generations. An M6 model was built for each of the first three generations of the 6 Series. Production of the M6 ended in 2019 and it was replaced by the BMW M8 (F91/F92/F93) in 2019.

How the heck does lower center of gravity help straight line performance? If any thing, it is the other way around and a higher center of gravity aids traction in some negligible way by transferring more weight to the rear. Maybe what you actually want to say is M6 being lower will have less drag and hence faster in a straight line.

Apparently, he tried to explain why further down in the thread:

Apologies. I was playing Forza 4 with the children and I was coaching them to get M5 to drive fast in a straight line which I subsequently typed in error.

@ Klier - We are on our annual ski trip to Switzerland, so I was on brandy and beer and Paprika Shells.

Happy New Year -@ Everybody with GCF.

Should be the same.
There are a couple of things to be considered here for powerboosts. Production costs and engine modifications to squeeze out more power (for just one model?) I`m not going to count it out completely but I don`t think it will happen.

And have you considered the fact that the M5 engine is a turbo engine that can be tuned within a blink of the eye, unlike the old NA M engines? A simple software remap gives the M5 600 hp.

^ True but does BMW really need to give the M6 more than the same 560hp, weight will have a more rewarding effect on the car than any addition of output.

650 GranCoupe use an upgraded engine with 445hp while 650 Coupe/Cabrio still have 407 hp. Could this mean something for the M6?

It`s clear, you want the M6 to have 600+hp. If your in the market for one buy a power-kit so your M6 can be faster than the other guys'.

I don`t think it`s that easy at M just to add power. The suspensions, steering and braking systems would have to work even faster with a 650hp production car, which would drive costs way up.

^Isn't the 750 facelift going to have the same power as well?

Of course, every new V8 will have the new 450 hp engine sooner or later. I don't think they're going to keep two versions (although they do it with the I6 turbo: 306 hp, 326 hp and 340 hp).
They're updating the V8 because of the imminent arrival of the '50d' engine....can't have a V8 that's barely stronger than a I6 diesel engine now can we?

Ahum, M6 isnt going to have 650 hp. If its going to be different from M5 then We talk around 580 hp.

Outputs increase due to competition but in the case of the M6 I just can't see the point of more power.... less weight yes but not more power.

The M6 isn't magically going to be much lighter. Look at the weight figures of an M5 is compared to a 550i, and the result will roughly be the same for the M6 compared to a 650i. Maybe a bit more because of the CF roof on the M6.

It all boils down to the fact that it is much easier to give the car some extra hp instead of lowering the weight by a number that actually means something....

No? Well I do. I see a lot of points. The most obvious one is to differentiate the M6 a bit more from the M5. Another one is the price increase of M6 over M5: for what if an M5 is as fast or faster because of lower weight (M6 GC will be close to X5 M in weight)?

And GTA, what do you know?

When Deckhook says the M6 will be "lighter", I suspect he means compared to the M5, not the 650i.

Depends actually. The M6 coupe will be lighter than M5, but M5 will be lighter than M6 GC.....that's why I think the M6 needs more power than M5 (not that it will get it but still)

The Gran Coupe is 102mm longer, 34mm wider and 72mm lower than the 550i. I think it's pretty safe to say an M6 GC will be very heavy....

All EU weight

  • 650i coupe: 1845 kg
  • 650i GC: 1940 kg
  • 650i cabrio: 2015 kg
  • 550i: 1905 kg
  • M5: 1945 kg (as much as 650i GC. Ok, even more)

So looking at those numbers, only the M6 coupe will be lighter than M5. M6 cabrio and M6 GC will weigh more. And will be slower, and need more power because of that.

I'm guessing that the difference between the weights of the M5 and M6 could be as much as 120kg solely because they're view of the M6 being more focused and less of the luxury car that the M5 is. If the weight gap ends up that great then it will be noticeably quicker without more power.

M5 is 1945 kg, M6 coupe will be around 1890 kg. M6 GC will be around 1990 kg. I don't know where you're getting the 120 kg lighter part from....

I'm reckoning the gap will double that of the 550i vs 650i due to the difference in role between the M5 and M6. Less than that and all it will be is another M5 minus 2 doors like the last one.

^ Just like the new 6er is a 5er with two doors less, so will the M6 be to the M5.

What difference in role are you talking about?

The new M5 has gain luxury over the out going model, do we really need the M6 to be a grand tourer or would it not be better for it to be more focus on driving, a bit edger and raw like the 1M.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
