HOPIUM MACHINA (2025)
Major order for hydrogen sedan
A French start-up wants to attack the Model S directly with the hydrogen-powered Hopium Machina and thus overtake Tesla. The premiere took place at the Paris Motor Show in October 2022. In addition to 1,000 private orders, the French have also landed their first major order.
A new premium electric sedan arrives from France. In mid-2021, Hopium announced that a first Machina prototype was ready. The French manufacturer called the model Alpha 0 and had subjected it to initial tests on the racetrack in June 2021. In addition, Hopium showed for the first time the light signature of the car and the manufacturer's logo, which is reminiscent of waves.
1,000 pre-orders and a mega-deal
At the same time, Hopium opened the order books for the first 1,000 orders in June – a reservation is associated with an upfront payment of 410 euros. As of October 2021, all 1,000 cars were reportedly reserved. The premiere of the production model took place in October 2022 at the Paris Motor Show. A production site had been sought for a long time. France was seeded, but Normandy found what it was looking for. In Douains, a new production plant is to be built on a 35-hectare site, which will offer an annual capacity of up to 20,000 cars and generate around 1,500 jobs. Completion is scheduled for 2024, with production scheduled to start in 2025. Buyers have to be prepared for prices starting at 120,000 euros. By 2030, sales are expected to reach one billion euros, and sales figures are expected to rise to 8,000 units per year.
Hopium has now taken a first major step towards this goal with a French bank. Agilauto, the Crédit Agricole Group's brand specializing in financing and selling cars in France, will offer the French manufacturer's hydrogen-powered sedan as part of programs for its private and business customers. To this end, an agreement has now been signed for a preliminary order of 10,000 vehicles, production of which is scheduled to begin in 2025. The order is worth around 1.2 billion euros.
The French start-up Hydrogen Motive Company (HMC) with its car division Hopium does not lack self-confidence: "Attack Tesla from above" is the motto. The French racing driver Olivier Lombard, whose family runs the Parisian variety show Moulin Rouge, founded HMC – according to his own statements, he has been interested in hydrogen-powered racing cars for several years. For example, he was involved in the development of the fuel cell-equipped LMPH2G, which drove a demo lap at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2019.
Series production planned for 2025
From 2024, Lombard wants to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a hydrogen race car. HMC has hardly announced any technical data so far – the French promise a range of around 1,000 kilometers with just one hydrogen tank filling. A refueling process should only take about three minutes. The power of the drive is specified with over 500 hp. The top speed is limited to 230 km/h. The Hopium reaches 100 km/h in about five seconds.
Images from the interior show a gigantic display landscape stretching across the entire width of the cockpit, which partially sinks into the dashboard when using the autonomous driving functions – details were not mentioned. Additional haptic controls fill the area of the centre console, which separates the driver and front passenger with a high, openwork extension of the dashboard. The continuous high centre console also separates the two rear passengers in their individual seat shells, above which a panoramic roof spreads.
RESULT
Hopium wants to become "the Tesla of hydrogen automobiles" and attack the role model directly. The Hopium Machina celebrated its premiere at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. Series production is scheduled to start in 2025. It promises over 500 hp, a range of around 1,000 kilometres and a refuelling time of just three minutes. Sounds good and with around 120,000 euros also adequately priced. The biggest problem, however, is likely to be the lack of hydrogen infrastructure. Nevertheless, a first major customer has already ordered 10,000 cars.
