F1 Hamilton blows $400,000 on “LEW 1S” number plate

Heck, the once humble Hamilton even compares himself to the greats like Senna (in Monaco), suggesting that he is now of the F1 racing greats after a year.

When/where did he do that? and if he actually did that, pretty shameful of him. Heck, he hasn't even won a single championship, let alone multiple ones.

Tells me a lot about Lewis Hamilton, I am beginning to have doubts about his staying power in F1.

Personally I could care less about what he spends his money on. Its his money and he can spend it on a solid gold toilet and wipe his ass with $100 bills. Fact is that the once humble Hamilton is not so humble anymore is he? When he came onto the scene, everybody talked him up as a humble, down-to-earth guy who won't get the glitz and glamour of F1 get to his head. Now my question to you - does a humble person go splash out on a vanity plate worth that much? I think not. Heck, the once humble Hamilton even compares himself to the greats like Senna (in Monaco), suggesting that he is now of the F1 racing greats after a year. Thats something that no other driver has done, because no one is cocky enough to say such things - it'll just invite criticism. Truth is Hamilton hasn't even been driving that great either (relative to the other F1 drivers). Monaco was very lucky, and most people know how to stop at a red traffic light.

By the way you make it seem like he lives the hard life. If he lives the hard life, jet setting around the world, being paid millions, lots of women, fast cars... then I really wonder what you do for a job.

Hamilton has never ever compared himself to Senna. He has praised him and looks up to him, but he has never compared himself to be like Senna. The press might have done it and other ex-F1 drivers but Hamilton himself haven't claimed to be anything like Senna. If he has, than please provide a link to the article.

A personalized plate is an investment. You would be surprised how people constantly buy plates off each other since you obviously can't have the same name plate as someone else. Besides that I can't see how something like that would have anything to do with who he is. Rich people, even those who are very humble blow money on things some might perceive as ridiculous. People like David Beckham have burnt this kind of money on a toy car for one of his sons who have most likely grown out of it by now. All rich people spend money are lavish things and the same applies to all F1 drivers.

Many people dream of having a car with their name on it, and Lewis happens to have the fund which allow him to buy the plate off someone without being financially ruined. Like I always say, you only live once. If you can afford something and truly want it then by any means by it.

Article above. I've said I don't care what he spends his money on, I just don't find him to be the humble person he's made out to be. He seems like an arrogant little pratt, and his recent comments and his failure under pressure have only backed that up unfortunately.

I'm not going to argue with you. You like him, I don't. This argument is not going to change each other opinions. I'm not going to waste my time. Read the article, choose which side you want to be on.

Top athletes get invited to movie premiers on a monthly basis and Hamilton is really just another athlete who happen to attend them. I can't see anything wrong with that. It's just that whenever super athletes like Hamilton do something it gets highlighted in the media, and sometimes mirrored in a negative way like in this very article by Motor Authority. As far as arrogance go he is more confidence especially when talking to the media these days, a little too much maybe. If you ask me overconfidence doesn't get you as far as humility does. Although I support him, my opinion is that he should tone down a little and the same applies to the Mclaren team.

What's even more peculiar is that Motor Authority isn't even an F1 news site. Just like Worldcarfans they only write about F1 when there's some "juicy" content. The article itself is laugh worthy. The titles indicates that it's about the plate but they it moves on to Heidfeld to finish off with injured Steve Hewitt who have zero to do with the article's main focus.

Like I said in my previous post, it has nothing to do with off the track stuff that makes me not like him. I've seen him in tons of ads here and I'm the US... when it comes to stuff really related to F1, such as interviews as what not, he comes off as arrogant like you say and he can tone it down a notch. He hasn't even had the greatest of seasons but the way he talks makes it seem like it's already in the bag.

To be honest, if Kubica was in a McLaren, I think there's a good chance he'd be outperforming him but that's just a guess.

Bernie seems to agree with you as well.

'Kubica would blow Lewis away in a better car'
Tuesday 17th June 2008

Bernie Ecclestone rates Fernando Alonso as the best Formula One driver currently on the grid, and believes Lewis Hamilton would be no match for Robert Kubica if the Pole was driving a Ferrari or a McLaren.

The Formula One supremo was asked to give his current top five F1 drivers by The Times' F1 Blog and this is how he rated them: Alonso, Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Kubica and Felipe Massa.

Ecclestone also believes Alonso would've outperformed Hamilton if he was still at McLaren.

"If he was still in a McLaren he would be showing Lewis the way home - I don't think there is any doubt about that," Ecclestone said.

"I never asked the guy - I'm going to ask him one day - when he signed for McLaren, whether he was told he was number one. Because if he didn't ask and he wasn't told, he would have assumed he was. Having a guy that's never been in a F1 car in the team with him, he'd expect to be number one wouldn't he?

On Hamilton he said: "The difference with Lewis is that, last year he didn't have to prove himself because he was the new kid on the block and he wasn't expected to finish a race. This year, people say he should have won the World Championship last year, and therefore he's under pressure to make sure he does it this year."

BMW's Kubica is currently leading the Drivers' Standings after seven rounds and Ecclestone has no doubt that he is in a class of his own.

"If you saw him in a McLaren or a Ferrari, I think I'd put my money on him blowing away Hamilton," he said.

Re: Hamilton blows $400,000 on “LEW 1S” number plate

Tells me a lot about Lewis Hamilton, I am beginning to have doubts about his staying power in F1.

apparantly he has said that he does not want to be in F1 anymore, he "can't deal with the pressure" and wants to get out. That's what my Dad heard on the radio anyway.

God, he's had a golden passage to the pinnacle of motorsport. I would have killed for that when i was karting, jayzus.

I dont think that's what he was saying at all. He said that he can feel the heat, that's it. Nothing about quitting the sport

I think Hamiltons mistakes come from the fact that he is consumed by the will that he is going to be this years champion , no matter what !
I remember when in the UK last year I was watching a sports award show - and his body language was so adamant he was going to win - when he didnt you could tell he was pissed off.

And here is where the blame lies not just with media over exposure but McLaren should shoulder some responsibility aswell.

Anyway BMW have taken a very special focus over it's F1 programme after the BMW 1-2 And are offering anything that can be thrown at the team to have a very successful end to the 2008 season. Whilst the possibility of a 1st champion win seems unrealistic , there are some within BMW who seem optimistic. But in F1 stranger things have happened.

I am willing to bet a years salary ( though actually on a few euros) that Hamilton will be the face for Mercedes upcoming alldancing superCar.

Well we are all sure of that already.:)

I have doubts, more than 50% of ressources have been put on the 2009 car from May while Ferrari & Macca are still investing the majority in their 2008 car.

Lewis has come out and deny the number plate purchase

Not stupid enough to spend money on bloody number plate - Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton said about the numberplate story: "That sounds about the worst number plate I've ever heard of. I'm not stupid enough to spend a couple of hundred grand on a bloody number plate. I wouldn't spend a hundred pounds on a number plate. A number plate's a number plate. It doesn't mean nothing to me. I just heard about it today. It was the first I'd heard about it."

Loving his use of english there, doesn't he mean anything not nothing because if its nothing then surely it means something!

^ he's speaking Estuary English, which is what linguists are calling this new middle class London English. Even Princes William and Harry have been infected with this new accent and way of speaking .....I have read the Queen does not like it at all.

I've already heard that from Americans... It always bugs me, but it seems to be a common language mistake. I'm of course speaking under the control of our fellow native english members.

Yes, i agree it annoys me too. As a member of the teenage/early 20's zone, i can quite honestly say i do not speak in this new fashion.
