While this is a non-competitive event and basically a track day for the super rich, it's also something that might eventually develop into a full fledged GT1 racing series should these events prove popular. At least, that's the plan (according to Gordon Murray who intends to participate with his T.50S). Fingers crossed!

It's taken them long enough to get it kicked off properly just at the track day level. I'm not sure how successful the previous iteration was (Blancpain Ultracar GT1), since I never saw any coverage of it... even though it promised "Aston Martin Vulcan, Ferrari LaFerrari and FXX, McLaren P1 GTR, Bugatti Veyron SuperSport, Pagani Huayra, Porsche 918 or Koenigsegg One:1"... so I'm not going to hold my breath for new GT1 any time soon.

Yeah, it does kinda seem too good to be true. I would imagine there would have to be a lot of support from the FIA and a lot of interest from high profile sponsors, not to mention pretty enthusiastic support from the manufacturers for this to move forward - which I don't really see happening in the current climate. It could be the perfect counter programming to the increasingly hybrid and newly even purely electric racing series, but, needless to say, with cars such as these it would be pretty expensive. So unless this is gonna be picked up on the back of a rising cultural shift, I don't see much chance that this is gonna happen either. But a man can dream...

If it gets these cars on track turning some hot laps during an SRO race weekend, then that's great for the spectators IMHO... but the problem there is how few events they've supported in the past. In 2016 I was hoping to see the GT1 Sports Club at Brands, but in the end missed the opportunity (went to Silverstone for the Blancpain Sprint series instead, which wasn't supported by the Ultracars)... I think that's the only time they've tried the series in the UK.
