Ford considers sale of Volvo, despite integration
heico-c70.jpg

Ford is "at least considering the sale of Volvo if not seeking a buyer," according to a report by trade publication Automotive News. Volvo began losing money this year due to a weak dollar and slowing sales. There's speculation Ford might sell the Swedish automaker before losses begin to mount.

Any sale poses a major problem for Volvo, because the next-generation V70, XC70, XC50, and S60 are all expected to use Ford's midsize EUCD platform. Volvo has an aggressive plan in place to revive its slowing sales, but it's held hostage to the problems at Ford. Presumedly, Ford would have to allow any potential buyer of the Volvo company to use Ford platforms until a new architecture was developed.

...and what's the great part?

Who do you think will buy Volvo?

Isn't/wasn't Volvo the only part that actually makes/made profit in Ford Group?

I'm not so sure about that...but if ford goes on a selling spree they will only have ford left pretty soon.

But how is this better for Volvo?

Ford selling Volvo is great because now we won't have to worry about Volvo losing its' indentity under Fords poorly managed global brand structure. Ford was way too ambitious when they set out on expanding their brand portfolio to begin with, they were already plagued by poor management that led to bad decision making that has now got them into the hole their in now. Volvo shouldn't have to suffer, and hopefully now, they won't.

Weren't Renault and Volvo affiliated in some way before they were sold to Ford?

I believe that Renault owns 20% of Volvo trucks.

Well, as a volvo owner, i don't consider these news good. It is actually bad news for me, and i'm gonna tell you why!

1) First of all and most important, is that we don't know who will buy the brand and what will do for it. I would be more than happy if BMW bought Volvo, but i would paint my car blue and dump it in the sea, if Renault would aquire Volvo. BTW, the last two years, Renault makes the most crappy and cheap cars of its whole history, from first hand experience. Don't forget i also have an old Renault Clio...

2) It seems that Ford is in a very bad condition. They are trying to sell every brand, or what? It's like, in the end the Ford Group will have only Ford. And as a car fan i don't what a brand like ford, or any other brand, with history or not, dying slowly.

3) And let's come down to the real world. I think that anyone that thinks Volvo is very competitive to BMW, MB or Audi is wrong. I have had hours and hours of discusions on this subjects with many people who work for Volvo Hellas, and for other car companies here. They all say, and me of course, that Volvo's target was not to directly try to compete with the german car makers, but to offer the greatest alternative, which means all the futures/equipment, or even more than the germans offer as standard, some strong engines (this doesn't mean sporty), more room (every volvo is a bit larger than its german alternative) and all that for a price which is lower than the germans. This is what they want to do, and it works here.

4) Now, if the dollars is weak or something's wrong with US's economy, that doesn't neccecerily mean that Volvo is not profitable. This way, Ford should sell every brand that offers cars in Europe..

Anyway, i want Volvo to remain at Ford Group, whether it is good or bad. I am 98% sure that if Ford sells Volvo, it will be no good for Volvo...

:t-cheers:
