Prior to the release of the R8 I would have said angel eyes anytime, but OMG, the LED's look absolutely orgasmic on the modern Audi's! Hands down the Audi LEDs.

That's what I'm talking about. I don't say the angel eyes look bad. They are cool, but they are now outdated. And IMO , the new angeleyes is a step back from the original ones. I don't like them.

Today I saw a black A5 standing first in the traffic lights on the opposite site of me... OH MY GOD.. You can not miss those lights!! I bet somebody will buy that car only for the lights! :)

I think I am starting to agree with the Audis now... Every time I see an A5 with their LEDs on, it amazes me. I agree with Tumbo, the new angel eyes/aurora lights or whatever they are called don't look so special anymore, because of the DRL function. The inner ones look too bright in my opinion, so it's more difficult to see the actual circles as opposed to the angels eyes you would see on the old 5er for example:

I do love angel eyes, they look great, but I've been more disappointed lately. Maybe I am exaggerating though...

Does somebody know how the angel eyes work - are they LED based etc?

No, you are not exaggerating. The picture you posted above is exactly what I maen. Those angel eyes look great.
These don't:

I'm happy with my angel eyes. Even if they been on the market for a while they are still attention grabber for people. I've notice it myself.

BTW just wait a year and you will see lot of old cars with LED's ala Audi. It's inevitable. There is a reason why there are wannabes, becuase its look good.

and yes, angeleyes are trademark for BMW and it would be stupid to change the concept becuase some guys arguing on the net which look the best.

Now thanx for the pic. This was the angle I was trying to fing. This is what I'm talking about. They do not look as good as they used too..

To me, this is soooo much better:

what you are showing arent original, aftermarket kits and I can change my headlights to look like the pics you posted above. You can change it if you have problem with it. BTWif If I darken my pics the angelyes will be more noticable, its a easy trick to make it look better.

Maybe I want them in red :D

Guys, the angel eye elements today are largely the same as they were from the days of the E39. There isn't a major difference. The differences you think you see are down to overall headlight design and/or photo manipulation (if you're referencing internet pictures). If you cant tell the distinct circles in the pics posted...

And if the R8 LED's are "amazing", then I suppose these Christmas decorations are also "amazing."

And here, the lighting elements in isolation:

They look alright, but "amazing" is a pretty strong word.

One hour ago I saw the previous generation X5 and the angel eyes are exactly like they are today. Nothing have changed. As stated before its easy to change the details in photos with help of photoshop.

If this pic was taken in closer distance it would have look better and sharper.

You BMW fanboys crack me up :)
This:

does NOT look same as this:

And it's not some details in photoshop or whatsovere. I've seen hundreds of 1ers and 335's and they DO NOT LOOK THE SAME as good old E46 and E39!!

And R8 and christmas lights?? Haha, okay then. This must be the cause why everybody is droolin' when they see it on the streets. Cause they think its a christmas tree....
C'mon! :eusa_doh:

^ it's down to the angles of the pictures you show! I agree that they are somewhat different because the inner ring is a bit smaller but the effect is the same to me. The picture of the 1er shows is from an angle where the inner one is brighter.

As for the Audi's light, some can argue that those don't add anything to the car. Some can say that since BMW had angel eyes, Audi had to do the me too version using LEDs. I'm not saying it's me because I think they look cool, but it's not to everyone's taste.

P.S. for me, they don't really look like Christmas lights... but rather like it's teardrops in the headlights :)

"Amazing"..."everybody drooling"...these are all the hallmark words of a fanboy. ;)
People are impressed by an R8 because of its design. Not necessarily because of the LED's. You think everybody must love Audi's LED's? If people think they are garish, vulgar and cheap, let them. For a fanboy, the overall effect of the LED's may be "amazing", but don't tell me there's a substantial difference between the LED's themselves and what you'd find on a Christmas tree, because there really isn't one. Remember, this thread is about the lighting elements themselves. Not the design of the headlights, not the overall design of the car. Do you also find the LED's on the Lexus "amazing"?
And your pic of the E39 is not necessarily representative either. Take a look, and notice how much more subtle the rings are compared to your picture:

You BMW fanboys crack me up :)

You crack me up too ;)
As stated before there are ways to improve the sharpness of the rings. Like I said I saw previous generation X5 yesterday and the lights are no different from today.

Tell me, what is the difference here?

3er E90 (Bangle)

5er E60 (Bangle) 5er E39

When I look at the pics the rings look exactly the same, only difference its that the inner light is smaller. Other than that rings are staying the same.

Here is new X5 vs old X5

PS my "comparison photos" come from BMW pressphoto webpage so its not showing aftermarkets lights.

To me angel eyes is part of the overall design of the car and headlight set up. The LED's on Audi models look like an after thought to me. They look extremely tacky with the current design of wavvy lines. BMW headlights are much more mature and elegent. Angel eyes are almost mystical and have a far greater presence then wavvy lines of bright light laid out across the edge of the headlight design...

Love that shot of the E90 Angel Eyes, Just_me. Great find :usa7uh:

Of course there is a difference. One is a full circle... the other difference is that in the new angel eye, the inner one is smaller. Either way, I still don't see a problem with it.

However, keep in mind that you are comparing the angel eye itself... not the whole cluster... not the whole front fascia of the car.

which I clearly said in my post you just quoted.

Well you were asking what the difference was so there it was. And also, like I said, one was full circle was not.

I think we are nit picking though. It's all good. I still think angel eyes are one of the most original things ever created. The fact that rice boxes are copying BMW should be a compliment, haha.
