5 Series Geneva Preview: BMW Concept 5 Series GT

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured by BMW since 1972.
Not at all. I think we have taken the right strategy here and focusing on a mid level GT in this case the 5er to showcase this interesting Concept.
When we were doing our marketing research " Who is this car for?" we found that a lot of drivers owned mid level sedans and coupes with the additional other car an SUV or Station Wagon for flexibility .

Purposely a lot of test clients relayed their thoughts that some cars are very uncomfortable to drive even after settings have been adjusted.
things like angle of pedals the reach to the controls etc and the seat height.

A majority tested found that they could drive the 5er GT without additional adjustment and found that controls , and pedals were all universally compatible.

Dynamically a mid level segment offers the best chance to introduce the GT er, as it will combine premium luxury and driving dynamics as found in a premium mid level sedan. A 3er GT will although be part of the same series but offer a more compact sporting image of the sports sedan class.

I fully agree with your first statement, I own a 335 and as soon as the family count increased, I was forced to get an X3 just so I can fulfill other needs.

While the little one enjoys the "dynamics" and performance of my 3er :) she definitely feels much better in the X3.

This car is like a pretty girl with very crooked legs. You wouldn't mind dating her but if line up with other girls, she wouldn't be your first pick. Inspite of it's very beautiful design attributes, the 5er GT looks like a Concept CS gone wrong, i.e a dysfunctional abortion with MPV elements. What's ditesting about it is the abnormal shape and unlike other dysfunctional cars like the CLS and X6, it doesn't posses the swagger to sell on looks.

Sure BMW's focus group might have liked it but buying the car using your hard earned money is another story. Sure the car is unique but as I see it, the market for this type of production is very minimal. Everytime Scott or Eni is asked to explain the car, they are forced to write an essay which often doesn't result in the solid sentence purpose for this car. BMW are shoting themselves in the foot with this one. Sales will initially be satisfactory but then face a fast deline like the R-class. Given the premium price I wouldn't be surprised if people resort to buying the new X3 instead, as it might end up as a more cool but yet highly functional product.

looks interesting andgreat....ı think the gt concept is r class rival....but absolutely great than r class...

They have a poll about this car on worldcarfans and the result for now is that 27& of the people "HATE IT" :D haha
And I was one of them.

# Love it - 20.80%
# Like it - 22.62%
# Dislike it - 18.35%
# Hate it - 26.34%
# Don't care - 11.89%

Men with great taste don't waste their time with worldcarfans. :D

This car is the only BMW I absolutely hate.
Proportions are completely off, and looks terrible. Interior is decent though.
It might compete with the R-class just cause these are the ugliest of these two great automakers.

We were hoping that the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo concept would be better-looking in person. It is not. Instead of growing on us, it kind of creeped us out the closer we looked. Not since the 7 Series from 2002 have we stared so long and appreciated so little.

Those proportions don't get any better when you're standing there in person and the interior is an odd mix of fabrics and colors that defy explanation. It doesn't even appear all that roomy in back either.

The unique dual hatch in back could be useful if the ceiling in your garage is less than 6 feet high. Otherwise, we don't see why you would use the smaller opening over the larger one.

It looks like there's a good chunk of space available, although according to BMW it's only 20.1 cubic feet with the rear seats slid forward. So yeah, it's barely bigger than the trunk of a large sedan, How innovative. -- Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor, Inside Line

Interestingly enough I disagree with them some here, it looks better in these pics. The front is likely the best front end on a BMW in 15 years. The next 5-Series Sedan is going to be a stunner IMO.

I don't know if it's been addressed yet, but I'm curious about the brown-colored material they used on the seats...what is it?

With the amount of brake dust a BMW gets these wheels will be a pain to clean. When is BMW going to change those messy brake pads?

Well, this time around they have solved the problem by painting the wheels in a brake-dust grey tone :D

This is sooooooooooooooooo going to be BMW's R Class (i.e. a monumental failure)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually we think this car is going to do very well .
The response at Geneva was well accepted and there seems to be additional interest at Shanghai
There are rumours that Mercedes-Benz are currently in competition to design a premium car for an older demographic which could be an additional model alongside the CLS.
So there is potential and a new opportunity for a new customer base.
And if Mercedes follow through then expect Audi to develop a competitor.

What we have learned from our evaluation clinics is that Concept 5er Gran Turismo has a perfect driving position and for passengers exceptional space and comfort.
@ Frankfurt on the World Premiere BMW will preview the BMW 5er Gran Turismo "Individual" and especially with the four seater option a very inviting luxurious passenger compartment , high quality layered Wood cappings and premium leather facings and then you will see why some Hotel chains are interested in this car as client transport.

That 5er GT look sexy from that angle. Exotic lines. Can't wait to see in in real!
You will see the production car in May.

Will it be a private event or an official unveiling of the production car?

So yeah they are following..not leading..
