5 Series Geneva Preview: BMW Concept 5 Series GT

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured by BMW since 1972.
I don´t care at all this 5 GT but how similar the F10 5er is going to be. I like a lot the new headlights and the entire front. Can someone tell us the similarities on design between this and the next 5er?.

Scott already answered that question. ;)

Front is kind of cool! I don't like the big kidneys!!! It's ugly!

The rear roof line is horrible. It will be interesting though to see how the sedan will look.

But, am I the only one that thinks that BMW didn't use any immagination at all here? This looks just like a mini-7-series.

So, the press event wasn't too successful in convincing the car mag editors :D

To us, it looks like an oversized hatchback, but BMW arrogantly insists the 5-series GT is "a new concept not just for BMW, but for the entire automotive world."
People Want This! We Swear!
BMW executives say they conducted extensive market research for the 5-series Gran Turismo, although they still feel compelled to justify the concept. "A typical sedan doesn't have any flexibility," according to BMW board member Klaus Draeger. He goes on to say that most station wagons have "much more the character of utility. Sports activity vehicles”—what BMW calls SUVs—“have come under criticism because of their environmentally critical situation. This is exactly where the new vehicle concept fits in perfectly." Let's just say that we are surprised by this forthright assessment of BMW's other offerings.

I'm not too sure about it yet. When I first looked at it I thought it was ugly - I especially hate the X6 style roofline. But looking closer, it isnt ugly, I suppose its just because its a new 'design concept' as that designer was saying...

I dont get this car though - is there really that big a demand for it? And if it is to be added to the 5 series line-up to add more 'functionality' to the 5 series sedan, why does it only have 4 seats? Surely a more functional version of the sedan would have 5 seats too instead of losing one...

^^
Ah I take that back - I just watched the web special - you can fold down the 3rd seat at the rear. I like the interior at least.

I just found the following design studio clay model photos.
2 things catched my eyes :
1. It looks like they originally considered a different rear light design...more slim line...

but even more interesting : have a close look at the car in the background (2nd picture)...what might that be ?!!
Maybe its just the 5 GT with the different rearlights :eusa_doh::eusa_danc

I must say these Alfa like rear lights would work much better! And good catch about that background model. Wonder if it's a rejected design or prototype. Looks better than the 7er like lights in either case.

If public reaction is not positive and the market continues to worsen, with vehicles like these an example of excess and over stretching the market - perhaps we will not see this model come to real life?

My advice to BMW and Mercedes... Stick to your wagons and SAVs. And stop interbreeding them!!!!

The rear of the car in the background looks much better than both F01 and PAS rears, will we see those lights on any BMW car?.

Was thinking the same exact thought :t-cheers: :t-cheers:

I think the 5GT looks very nice, especially the front and interior. The back probably is its weak point, but I think we'll get used to it.
Now the rear of that silver concept in the backgroung of he clay model REALLY LOOKS HOT. IMO much better that the production version.

Eni / Scott : How different is the design from the F10 ?????? :t-cheers:

This is a nice rear design from AMS - meant to be a rendering for the next F10 Touring

Guys, forget the back end. This back end is as likely to happen as the Mercedes Concept Fascination. This is just a way to show the next 5-series without "showing" the next 5.

The front and side are sweet. I like better than the E, and this is coming from an MB guy. It is bold, sexy and stoic.

I was nearly born in a BMW, my father drives a BMW for over 40 years, I drive with a BMW for nearly 18 years (just took delivery of my last one 3 months ago), my wife, sister in law, father in law...all drive Bimmers (on my advice). So you can imagine how much I love the brand. But after seeing this car and after the very disappointing new 7-series i'm starting to become ashamed to drive with a BMW (look at the back and 3/4 from the rear). I thought the Prius was an ugly car, but this is even worse. Is the current BMW board blindfolded and can they just feel the car with their hands when they give an approval for a car? There is a good chance my next car will be something different...
I don't need the marketing blablabla, nor do I need press releases with pics taken all over the world (no single value added!). They better spent the money to develop decent cars, cars to which most drivers want to be assimilated with. If not, please distribute the money to the shareholder (good for my wallet).

The back end is real. BMW concepts are thinly veiled previews of the production vehicle.

Very mixed emotions on this concept... and can somebody tell why the @*&% does BMW pick such hideous colours for their concepts/launches?! :t-hands:

5er GT is a design link between 5er & 7er. With typical GT design element: pointy Hofmeister kink, and CS-like cut headlights.

That clay model was the winning design proposal - which was then modified in the evaluation process: to sit better between 5er & 7er. Especially after decision the model would be another version of 5er, and not a separate family / designation. Therefore the rear has been modified - also due practical reasons:

initially the car was also a tad lower & less useful - it was indeed more like a 5er Hatchback. The roof has been raised due the panaroma roof: to make more head room. Therefore also the rear had to be modified - due

Also the new rear light LED tech needs bigger surface - so the lean cluster from the design proposals were just too tiny to incorporate more than one light tube.

:t-cheers:

5er GT design team:

Chris Weil .... exterior design
Oliver Heilmer .... interior design (the same guy also designed X5 & X6 interiors!)
Corona Doering .... material, color & trim designer

At least the haters are more or less the people who would hate it no matter how it looked, just because it's a BMW. I can live with that :)

I like the car a lot. The 5er sedan, 5er Touring, 6er coupé/cabrio and 5er GT is a perfect line-up for the mid size luxury segment. Just utterly perfect.
