Geneva Motor Show 2020

Lamborghini and the rest who planned to not attend GIMS 2020 just made a great economical decision.

Rest in piece to the money of the brands who planned attending and invested major money in this.

Well...now that the Geneva venue has been cancelled, how about immediately releasing some official photographs of the cars scheduled to have appeared in-the-metal ?*

*Message to manufacturers.

It is coherent to cancel, a shame and an economic problem too, but I had never seen anything like that, when you see a cancellation like this you realize the seriousness of the problem.
The H1N1 was nothing compared to what is being seen now

Indeed, Corona is very serious. Yet direct comparisons to H1N1 pandemics in 1918 and 1920 (up to 50 mio. deaths in total according to some estimates) may arguably not be warranted. The H1N1-derivative "Swine Flu" pandemic in 2009/10 claimed some 19,000 lives. We can only hope that medical care and the competence of health authorities, as well as general public awareness, has since progressed significantly.

This has to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year in the motoring calendar, its really terrible how this virus has altered peoples lifes in a short period of time.

Well...now that the Geneva venue has been cancelled, how about immediately releasing some officia...
Let's hope they are not going to postpone the Release to later in the year then ! I've been waiting too long for the 992 Turbo at least. :(

I did not know that there had been so many, it shows more then that from 2009 to today the difference is that there was no other pandemic that today are the social networks that falsify and dramatize in order to be seen.

Surely the scientists control it soon, but at times it seems that It unleashes chaos and nobody knows what to do, as yesterday that the Cayman Islands denied port to a cruise ship with thousands of people on suspicion that a crew member has the flu, almost leaving them adrift until Mexico received them, just imagine the passengers when they tell you, not here.......

That said, take care guys, don't take it lightly
Hopefully the Autoshow only postpones the 15 days indicated by that government, but the press releases are respected, for this is the internet, use it

2020 Geneva motor show axed due to coronavirus
Car industry's biggest annual event is canned following continued spread of Covid-19

This year’s Geneva motor show has been cancelled due to the continued spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The announcement was made by event organisers after several confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Geneva and other parts of Switzerland. There has been a substantial outbreak of the coronavirus, which originated in China, in northern Italy recently, with cases announced in a number of other European countries.

While organisers initially said the motor show, the biggest event in the automotive calendar, would continue, recent moves by authorities in Geneva and Switzerland to try to limit the spread of Covid-19 led to them finally pull the plug.

Organisers cited "force majeure" when announcing to exhibitors that the event would not go ahead. They also ruled out postponing the event until a later date, noting its size meant that was unfeasible.

Chairman of the Foundation Board Maurice Turrettini said: "We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors' top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision."

The organisers added: "The dismantling of the event will now have to be organised. The financial consequences for all those involved in the event are significant and will need to be assessed over the coming weeks. One thing is certain: tickets already purchased for the event will be refunded. The organisers will communicate about this as soon as possible, via their website."

On Friday morning, the Swiss government banned large gatherings. In a statement, the cabinet said: “In view of the current situation and the spread of the coronavirus, the Federal Council has categorised the situation in Switzerland as ‘special’ in terms of the Epidemics Act. Large-scale events involving more than 1000 people are to be banned. The ban comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until 15 March."

The show was due to open to the press on Tuesday 3 March before opening to the public from 5-15 March. Around 602,000 people attended the show last year.

Several companies had already changed their plans in the days leading up to the confirmation. Audio firm Harman pulled its stand earlier this week, with EV start-up Byton following suit last night. Autocar understands several firms had expressed concern about the prospect of the show continuing and were in the process of reworking their plans for the event.

This year's Chinese Grand Prix, due to take place in April, has already been postponed due to the coronavirus, along with other major events outside the automotive world, including a Six Nations rugby match between Ireland and Italy. A number of Italian Serie A football games due to take place this weekend will be played behind closed doors.

Moves to combat the spread of Covid-19 could have a major impact on the car industry beyond the cancellation of Geneva. Car sales in China, which has been worst hit by the virus, have slumped, and there are concerns about the supply of parts from the country, which remains a major manufacturing hub. For example, in its latest financial results, Aston Martin noted that parts supply issues could potentially delay the launch of the DBX SUV.

On Friday, Hyundai was forced to close one of its factories in South Korea, which has the highest number of Covid-19 cases outside of China, after a worker tested positive for the virus.

So does that mean Bentley won't be releasing pictures of the Mulliner Bacalar or March 3rd?

Dismantling of the show begins.

"Last year 660,000 people attended the Geneva show and the exhibition generated an estimated 200-250 million Swiss francs ($205-$256 million) worth of business.

Visitors who bought tickets will be refunded, although exhibitors will not, given it was the health authorities, rather than organizers Palexpo, who called off the event."

It is force majeure. The organisers do not have liability.
Yupp.

My partner is a doctor and this week several patients have asked her for sicknotes that they can use to cancel holidays/travel that is at risk because of the Coronavirus.

Sad but necessary. Weird times we're in.

I know it's posited that this will accelerate the demise of the auto show concept as we know it, and I do think it was heading for a decline prior to the whole coronavirus mishegas, but in my auto enthusiast heart, I hope it doesn't. Despite some of the cynical marketing exercises car companies engage in, I do like some of the pomp and that sense of occasion. I wonder if any car companies will be even more trigger-shy when taking part in future joint exhibitions once this (hopefully) subsides.

Geneva was different though. Geneva is annual rather than bi-annual it was more of a global platform than any other show. Compared to that other annual show the NAIAS in Detroit which has met its demise. Geneva was always the preferred place to be for the European contingent.
Geneva was more thought of as an international event. IAA Might have had the scale but that is thought of as the German Powerhouse just as NAIAS is the US and Paris for the French. Palexpo,Geneva was a more complete in terms of logistics and everyone had a platform.

If there is one consolation. It's that the planned disruptions by eco-fascists and climate communists will not go ahead.
Interesting to read on Twitter that US protestors have flown to Geneva to join them.
Now they are stranded in Geneva and asking for assistance.

2020 has been a very rough year 3 months in - prospects for the rest of the year look grim.

I wonder how online reveals this week will make car manufacturers feel about auto shows next year.

I think many will want to attend as exhibiting gives your car a reach of hundreds/thousands of attendees, who then amplify reach by sharing photos to million others online.
