The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an iconic vehicle. Technically speaking, the car is old enough to tell bedtime stories to modern cars. Launched over 31 years ago, the G-class has aged gracefully and slowly earned its reputation of being the best off-roader, the ‘old-school’ style. Though rarely, but the car has been updated by Mercedes-Benz to keep pace with the ever-changing automotive industry. Once again we are at a threshold of witnessing another design and technical update to the historical vehicle.

According to trusted sources from inside the G-Klasse’s manufacturing facility at Graz, Austria, the vehicle is all set to receive a minor facelift. This facelift is its third in the last four years. The changes will begin this September and the updated G will most likely be launched at the upcoming Paris Auto Show in autumn.
A major addition to the G-Klasse marketing brochure will be the inclusion of Euro-5 emission standards accordance across on all of its European powertrains. Moreover, the interior will also be tweaked a little to accommodate some of the modern technology developed for cars like the new E-Klasse. As far as exterior design is considered, there will be minimalistic changes and the update will most likely consist of a trivial ‘nip and tuck’ job. A new alloy rim collection will be available for every G-class model version.

In the G500, the revered 5.5 L normally-aspirated V8 engine will be replaced with a direct injection V8 which uses twin-turbochargers to boost both torque and power while lowering the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

The monstrous AMG version is expected to retain its 5.4-liter supercharged V8 unit. The ‘55’ moniker is, however, predicted to be replaced by the name ‘63’ somewhere around 2012. The new V8 engine will have a power rating between 544 to 571 hp.

Oh boy...not again. I'd say leave the engines where they are. Hell it just became the G550 here in the U.S....lol. Time marches on I guess, even for the G. At least leave the AMG engine alone for real. The 6.2L doesn't fit and the new turbo AMG V8 should be reserved for the latest Mercedes models, not this (charming) relic.

Mercedes G-Wagen reportedly to receive more updates for 2011

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class – also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen for short – has had an interesting history, particularly in the U.S. market. The go-anywhere para-military SUV has been in production for over 30 years, but was only available in North America for much of its history as a gray-market import. Public demand eventually prompted Mercedes to officially offer the G-Wagen on American shores, where it proved a popular niche vehicle. In fact, its popularity prompted Mercedes to produce the GL-Class, which was originally envisioned as a replacement for the aging Geländewagen. The G was slated to cease production in 2006, but true to its rugged style and nary-unstopable capabilities, it's still here.

Over the past few years the G-Class has undergone a series of (largely cosmetic) updates, and reports now indicate that Mercedes has another one in store for the big dinosaur. While the boxy exterior is expected to carry over as the G's calling card, a few minor tweaks are in those cards, likely centered around the lights, bumpers and such. The cabin is slated for a thorough update, while updates under the hood will see the entire range Euro 5 emissions certified... no mean feat for such a behemoth.

At the top of the range, the old supercharged 5.4-liter V8 will continue to carry the G55 moniker – the last AMG model to do so – until the new direct-injection, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 comes along, oddly bearing the G63 AMG nameplate. Expect the new-but-still-recognizable G to bow at the Paris Motor Show this fall, with market roll-out to begin commensurately.

It'll probably get LED's (fogs, and tailights). That's what I think it's missing from the rest of the lineup.
