Future BMW Virtual Cockpit?

Like gesture control this won't be well received when it hits the market then the naysayers will make fun of it and complain on how useles it is then a couple years later it will be an industry standard pioneered by BMW like it has with most technologies we see today.

Have you tried gesture control on the 7 Series? I have and it simply doesn't work. And that's before we even discuss whether it's useful or not.

This new system will get my approval if it both works and actually makes operating functions on the car easier.

I have only in a showroom, and even in a controlled environment it's so-so at best.

Still, this stuff is going to be major in a couple of years. The first versions of a HUD where less than ideal as well.

I don't like it at all. The design has zero connection to the BMW fonts and layouts of old. It feels like a Lexus dash.
Jip! Was actually very comforting to see the new 7's instrumentation continuing the classic theme albeit in a perfect modern and clear layout...are you listening BMW!?

Maybe we will see it in 2018 in the next generation 3-Series or 7-Series LCI.

So does BMW rush to the market for the sake of being first?

That is the silliest thing I have ever heard. As far as gizmos and electronic trickeries are concerned; BMW is the standards bearer in the industry. I was so impressed with what the 7 has (except the gesture control bit) on offer; no other car manufacturer comes close. Now if they only concentrated a little more on their fit and finish....

The first iteration of idrive was clunky at best and the first generation of gesture control is a complete wank. So yes it's a perfectly valid question IMO. That's not to say they don't excel at vehicle electronics in general. The current generation idrive is superior to Command and MMI in many ways, and the HUD breadth of integration on BMWs are better than I have seen anywhere else.

Yet Audi and Mercedes copied it and Mercedes still has not figured it out. Their interface is horrible; the difference between the two is like the difference between 100Mbps and dialup. I swear every time I am fiddling with the COMAND system I feel like the car is going to blast the dial up noise through the speakers.
