Officials at Fiat and Daimler have been in negotiations since the middle of the year over a possible deal to co-develop several new models for their respective Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz brands. Most are predicting the two carmakers to sign a deal to cross-share engine technologies but according to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne everything is on the table.

“We’re not just talking with Daimler about engines, we’re talking about everything,” Marchionne revealed to reporters from Reuters this week. Daimler was first rumoured to be working with Fiat to develop a new platform for the next-gen A and B-class models, now there’s talk of a flagship Alfa Romeo sedan and new SUV model as well. Earlier this month Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche visited a Fiat factory in Cassino, Italy, where the Bravo hatchback is built.

Daimler is also in talks with BMW but the signing of a $3.5 billion deal with Fiat for the supply of truck engines earlier this year means the two carmakers are already good bedfellows.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Pity...Hope it won't be finalized.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

They would really make a great deal if they buy some technologies from the CRF like the Uniair.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

I am sorry, but...Mercedes working with BMW, AUDI, even VW, ok, no problem. But Fiat? Same thing as Chrysler.

Are there no other carmaker with a more premium image? A cooperation between Renault and Fiat, okay, not between Mercedes and Fiat.

Do you think it is possible, to share platform between a RWD premium car and an unreliable crappy FWD basic car?

Next time, a merger with Lada?

I don't see the point.

Also Mercedes focusses on reliability, whereas Fiat...not really. Not a single common value... Fiat build bad-finished, not reliable, bad driving car with low price, Mercedes just the contrary...

Just one example: I unfortunately bought an Opel Astra CDTI 150, with Fiat/Alfa diesel motor. less than two years old, less than 15.000kms. Kept it 3 months, not more, because I spent all my time at the dealer to try to fix it. The motor never worked properly. And a friend of mine had the same but in GTC, same thing.

Do you want to see this motor in a Mercedes? Or a motor done by the same team? I don't. And if Mercedes conceives the motor, it will be too expensive for Fiat...

Why not cooperating with someone sharing the same view on a car, meaning reliable, premium, well-built ...?

Everything? DaimlerFiat?

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

I know that Daimler has to move to avoid a possible takeover. But if this happen, an alliance with Fiat (even only for a motor or a platform), I personnally will commit a stupid thing against Dr.Z.

I tought they understood you can't put premium and crappy together...Unless you want the premuim to slowly become crappy.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Who gives a shit to the Fiat's image ? Did Bmw's image suffer from cooperating with PSA ? Here we are talking about technical expertise and when it comes to that, Fiat is a big player, do you have an idea about all the R&D ressources they have ??

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

No, really I don't.

Motors are awful, platforms are old and crappy or created in cooperation with others, innovation is unknown word in Turin, rteliability is the only thing that is worse than the finition in a Fiat, even despite some progress in newer models...

The only good thing in Fiat is Ferrrari. All the rest in not a penny worth.

And even the fact that Mercedes is linked to Fiat is a bad thing for Mercedes.

Concerning BMW and Peugeot: Peugeot is far from having the image of Fiat, and it is a cooperation for Mini and not BMW from what I know.

I advise you to search for CRF, Magnetii Marelli, the origin of TDi concept, the common rail.....

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Didn't Daimler learn anything from their DC-merger!?

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Well hopefully they'll keep any type of cooperation limited to smaller (A/B) cars and smaller engines. I just can't see Mercedes developing anything from the C-Class on up with Fiat whether it be engines or platforms.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Maybe it's not Fiat but Alfa Romeo. :eusa_thin 147 & A/B -Class?

Or a crazy idea: Selling smart to Fiat now that they have fixed it ready to be sold ;)

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Alfa Romeo has the same crappy quality and unreliability.

It that happen, you will see in Fiat's ad "engineered with Mercedes-Benz", which is good for Fiat, not for Mercedes.

Do you think you will see "engineered with Fiat" in the Mercedes' ads?

That single fact says everything about you will win from this cooperation, and who will loose...

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

As long as it just involves Fiat buying Mercedes stuff and they keep their mouths SHUT about it...then its ok. :D Don't Mercedes ever learn :t-banghea. They're better off going to bed with BMW.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

Daimler won't cooperate with Fiat

AMS reports Daimler & Fiat ended the cooperation talks since Fiat small car production is even more expensive than the MB one - so the cooperation doesn't make any sense.

MB are still talking with BMW about small car platform (A- & B-class cooperation. MB say cooperation is not obligatory, and will develop new platform on their own if talks with BMW fail. The decision will be made by the end of this year!

Regarding the 4-cylinder petrol & diesel engine cooperation: the talks with BMW / PSA are still in progress, so they are the talks with unnamed Japanese carmakers.

The article says engine cooperation is much more possible (if not inevitable) than the platform cooperation.

Re: Fiat and Daimler in talks about ‘everything’

I've just read in Automobilwoche that Fiat and Daimler are still talking about a cooperation. It is the Panda platform that could interest Daimler, and in counterpart Daimler could also give a platform to Fiat...:eusa_doh:

Sure Fiat knows how to build small cars, but they don't really pass to Mercedes' premium needs for me...The Panda is a very good smallcar, but its drivetrain and safety have nothing to do with what you expect from a Mercedes.

If it is branded smart, I would say it is a good cooperation idea. It could be the first "well-priced" smart...

MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Fiat SpA and Daimler AG are in talks regarding
the possible swap of car platforms, the daily Il Corriere della Sera said without giving a source.

Fiat (nyse: FIA - news - people ) could provide the platform of its Panda model to the German car maker in exchange of Mercedes platforms destined to the Alfa Romeo brand, it added.

On Nov 30, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said talks on possible alliances are continuing with Daimler, rejecting recent reports on an interruption.
Fiat has previously said the talks with Daimler are wide-ranging.
