Everybody knows Ferrari’s FXX supercar is a testbed for the carmaker’s upcoming technologies, both for the racetrack and the road, but the prototype’s 6.2L V12 engine may soon be a thing of the past. Ferrari is considering using a more efficient twin-turbo V8 engine for the successor to the Enzo, due to hit the streets in 2012.

Ferrari used a similar powerplant for its F40, arguably the world’s first supercar, but the world has since moved on to large displacement V10 and V12 engines. Speaking with AutoWeek, Ferrari GT technical director Roberto Fedeli confirmed engineers were investigating both V12 and V8 options for the new supercar, explaining that Ferrari was no longer interested in power wars.

“For us, it’s not just a question of power. We have to choose whether we maintain the shape of the weight-to-power curve of the Enzo with more power or with less weight,” Fedeli said. “If we do a [1,000kg (2200lb)] car with the same weight-to-power ratio as the FXX, then you want to save the maximum weight. The best packaging for that kind of car is an eight-cylinder turbo. That would have to be an all-new V8.”

“The FXX is to test some innovations that we have in our minds [for the next car],” said Fedeli. “We have one to one and a half years to choose the solution before we start the car.”

I was just reading this today when my issue arrived in the mail. I got EVO, CAR and AutoWeek all in the same day. I could hardly eat or catch a breath trying to read them all at once.

CONFIRMED: Ferrari considering twin-turbo V8 for next Enzo

Ferrari is looking to decrease its carbon footprint by 40% in time for stringent new European CO2 laws that come into effect in 2012, and even the Enzo replacement could receive a downsizing. We broke the news a couple months back about Ferrari looking into a twin-turbo V8 to replace the Enzo's 6.0L V12 powerplant, and Ferrari technical director Robert Fedeli told AutoWeek that the Italian automaker is developing both a V8 and a V12 to cover its exotic options.

The Italian automaker states that it is not interested in advancing the power wars, and that driving dynamics will take precedence over brute force. If our sources were right about the new force-fed V8 pumping 900 horses at the drivetrain, then we would be all for a four-cylinder diet for the top-end Ferrari. If Ferrari manages to keep the weight to 2,200 lbs. using technology hinted at with the FXX Mille Chile concept, then even the vaunted Veyron could have more competition than it can handle. Lets just hope featherlight weight and 900 HP comes with driving lessons, because otherwise we'll be doing a lot more Ferrari crash posts come 2012.

And then there's this turbo-charged F50 (probably a Koenig Ferrari F50 with 850 hp / 800 Nm Koenig-Specials - Ferrari-Tuning)

I like the sound :D

Returning to the old, eh?

The 288 GTO was also turborcharged (though only featured one 'charger, rather than two as in the F40).

Though using an 8-Cylinder may drop unwanted weight for the successor, I still have a very hard time believing they'll end up with a final kerbweight of "2,200 lbs". Especially with increasing safety restrictions...

I would imagine those Enzo owners will be laughing cause their car will probably be the last of the mid engined V12 super Ferrari.

As long as it performs like the FXX, I don't have any problems with a mid engine Ferrari supercar using a twin turbo V8.

Very surprised to see this happening,i thought the F70 will get the FXX engine with 850hp,my bubble was burst:D .IMO a V8 is good for thier baby car not thier ultimate. If they decided to go with the V8 then i hope they make as mad as hell.

V10 would be a nice compromise. :usa7uh: I don't know if they've ever used one outside motorsports and the know-how in making F1 V10 engines should make the development process easier.
