458 [2009-2015] Ferrari 458 Italia recalled over fire risk

The Ferrari 458 Italia (Type F142) is an Italian mid-engine sports car produced by Ferrari. The 458 is the successor of the F430, and was first officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was succeeded by the 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) in 2015.

After a recent spate of engine fires, Ferrari has officially issued a recall of the 458 Italia.

According to the automaker, an adhesive used to attach a heat shield under the rear fender can ignite under high temperatures, leading to a larger fire in the engine bay. We've seen at least four cases on the internet of flaming 458s like this one, and while we can't say for certain, it would seem this adhesive is the likely cause.

Ferrari has designed a new heat shield that attaches with rivets, negating the need for the adhesive. Naturally, 458 owners are urged to call a dealer to schedule an appointment for the free fix.

But was the 458 ever tested in the real world environments like the Germans do? And I don't just mean their test track.

At least they know what the problem is now and can fix it. You'd think that a racing company like Ferrari would be an expert on heat management.

For me the car that I own need to work well and thats what it will after they fix the problem.

As seen on Autocar.co.uk:
Ferrari North Europe has officially explained the fault that has caused five of the very earliest examples of its 458 supercar to catch fire.

"When the car is driven to high exhaust temperatures, in hot ambient temperatures, the adhesive used in the wheelarch assemblies can overheat and allow the rear wheel housing heat shields to move around. In extreme cases, the glue can begin to smoke and even catch fire," a Ferrari spokesperson told Autocar.

"It would only be a problem on cars driven very hard, and has only affected a handful of the 1248 458 Italias we've delivered so far – none in the UK,” our source confirmed.

Ferrari claims that the problem has been made to look more serious than it should because of unfortunate timing and innaccurate reporting. A new 458 was written off because of a warehouse fire recently, and others have been crashed, the firm says, causing some areas of the media to suggest the car is 'jinxed'.

Ferrari will recall all of the 458s delivered so far to fit new wheelarch liners, which will be attached more securely. It will also be replacing any cars that have been damaged as a result of the problem. All new 458s built now that Ferrari’s Maranello plant has re-opened after the summer shutdown will be rectified before they leave the factory.

This from Leftlanews

In the year of the recall, even exotic automakers like Ferrari aren’t immune to the epidemic.
Leftlane reported just shy of a week ago that a series of inexplicable fires had claimed the lives of several young Ferrari 458 Italia supercars – luckily no owners or bystanders were hurt or killed. After digging into the issue, rather quickly Ferrari has found the cause and a solution to the problem, as explained to Autocar.
“When the car is driven to high exhaust temperatures, in hot ambient temperatures, the adhesive used in the wheelarch assemblies can overheat and allow the rear wheel housing heat shields to move around. In extreme cases, the glue can begin to smoke and even catch fire,” explained a Ferrari spokesman.
Another source at Ferrari explained that the issue should only arise if the vehicle is pushed extremely hard and for an extended period of time, allowing the ambient temperature to grow behind expected levels. The same source also suggested that the problems have been isolated to only a handful of cars out of the 1,248 units sold to date.
Ferrari plans to replace the vehicles which were lost to fire for its owners, and it will recall and repair all existing vehicle with a new design that is more secure.[ :t-cheers:

Toyota can learn from Ferarri;):D

Ok for me it needs to work well from the start..;)

Thats a risk Im willing to take since 458 is the best performance car on the market. Also, money is no object if I can afford a 458. Then I can take my M3 while the Ferrari is at the workshop ;)

Seriously though, when this issue been taken care of, the car will work from the start. :usa7uh:

^no..it will start working after the recall..
Not from start.. start was some 1200 430´s ago..
But i mean if your ok with it.. then there must be many others..
But im not.. thats why i hate cars like the koenigsegg where they claim that the owner is a test driver.. i dont want to do your work and pay 10million.. pay me 10 and i might do it;)
