Earlier today, the AAA and Oil Price Information Service reported that average U.S. gasoline prices hit a new record at $3.50 per gallon. A lot of people are freaking out here in the U.S. with the cost of gas but how about if you paid more than double that like they do in Germany; how does that sound?

Ok, so we knew that Europeans pay an arm and a leg for gasoline – mostly due to heavy taxation, but we wanted to see exactly how much more so we “flew” over to Eurostat, the official European statistic office to find out. As you can see in the list, there are huge variations in Europe with gasoline prices ranging from “as low” as €3.82 / $6.12 a gallon in Bulgaria to as deep-space high as €5.87 / $9.39 in Norway. Suddenly $3.50 doesn’t sound that bad, does it... And no, we’re not implying that we should pay more for gas.

*Gas prices were taken on April 18, 2008 by Eurostat and they concern the average cost of one liter of Euro-Super 95 -taxes and duties included. For comparison reasons, we converted Euros/liter prices into Euros/gallon and Dollars/gallon. Note that the exchange rate between the Dollar and the Euro also hit a new record high today (€1 = $1.60 on April 22, 2008).

Im back from the states it was a shock coming home to Sweden again. The gas price here is a lot more than in the states. Americans should be happy they dont live here.

It's not as simple as that. You have to take the dropping value of the dollar into account. That is what creates the illusion that everything is so much cheaper in the US.

^Not only the gas but the car prices is much cheaper too.

I just gotta put up a smile!
$9.39 in Norway
:D

Actually I will be filling gas tomorrow can't wait..
Then it's probably 9,99:cool: I DO LOVE THIS COUNTRY WITH ALL DO RESPECT.

OMG I could no longer afford to drive my car at those gasoline prices. I knew gas was expensive elsewhere but damn. I found a good article about oil prices on Businessweek, I'll post it in a new thread.

I was thinking about this yesterday, filling up the E. $3.65 a gallon x 16 gallons is bad enough.

WOW. That is wild. It costs me like 40 bucks to fill up my car at 3.95 (CA prices) which I don't consider to be too high. But pushing 100 bucks a fill up! Wheew, I'd be riding my bike. I do hope that the gas prices in America continue to surge to kill the SUV and truck market. I want good, clean, public transportation all around me. Bring it on.

If that happens it will do more than kill the SUV and truck markets. It will kill the market for anything with more than 6-cylinders. I'm vehemently opposed to being forced to drive a Prius or some other vehicle with all the excitement of a golf cart. Public transportation is for big city dwellers, its a pain in the arse for us suburbanites.

the Americans complain, welcome to Europe guys ;) it would give you guys a heartattack.

Oh Merc1 I don't think you'll need to worry about being seen in a Prius any time soon. Plenty of fun can be had with 4 cylinders. I think everyone has forgotten that as cars have become bigger and heavier with bigger thirstier engines. Sure there isn't anything like a big V8 but hey those luxuries used to be reserved for people that could afford not to worry about the price of gasoline. I don't want to drive a Prius either, and never ever will if I have anything to do with it. Public transportation is not accessible to suburbia now, but imagine if things continue like this, the demand surely will increase.

There might be plenty of fun 4-cylinder cars around now, but I want no part of them right now. I want my V8 and RWD...the configuration god intended for cars to be! I'll take a Jetta or GTI on the side, but not as my only car. Had 4-cylinders before, don't want another. Let me enjoy it for another 10 years and I'll think about downsizing..lol.

You know what's the funniest thing? Never ever untill now, diesel was more expensive than gasoline... That's the case now, at least in my country...;):t-crazy2:

Anyhow, should i switch from diesel to gasoline powered BMW? Nope, definitely not.

At least not for now...:D

:t-cheers:

Diesel is like $4.50 a gallon in the U.S....way higher than gasoline. This is going to be a problem for some diesel MB/BMW/Aud/VW buyers.

M

Currently €1.43 for gas and €1.26 for diesel in Finland, but the experts say that diesel price will match that of gasoline in the summer... apparently diesel is (globally) in high demand right now.

Nope. Diesel used to be much, and in some cases dramatically cheaper than gasoline. Not sure what happened with those prices.

M

I believe the government a few years ago added $.50 in taxes to diesel.

As far as I remember, diesel has always been more expensive than petrol in Scotland. Petrol is around £1.10 ($2.14) a litre or about £1.25ish or more ($2.48) per litre of diesel. It costs alot to drive nowadays! We've also got a strike at the main refinery in Scotland for providing fuel so fuel stations are drying up and pricing are soaring too (petrol reaching £1.30 a litre!!)
