RAV4 EuroNCAP crash test reveals airbag problem in new Toyota RAV4.

The Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers. The RAV4 is one of the best-selling SUVs of all time. By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally. In February 2025, the RAV4 replaced the Ford F-150 as the top selling car in the United States, after nearly four decades of the F-150's reign.

Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has carried out new crash tests on the Chevrolet Kalos, Nissan Note, Toyota RAV4 and Land Rover Discovery III.

The Note, RAV4 and Discovery were all awarded four stars for overall occupant protection - rather disappointing results for brand-new vehicles - and the Kalos scored a poor three stars, though this is better than the two-star result achieved by the closely-related Aveo earlier this year.

Two specific faults were also highlighted in the NCAP tests. During the side impact tests, one of the Isofix child seat mounting points in the Nissan Note broke: Nissan has said that this was a problem in an early batch of vehicles that has now been fixed and it is to issue a recall for Notes already sold with this problem.

The airbags in the Toyota RAV4 also fired late in the frontal crash test, due to a detached sensor cable. Toyota has modified all cars since sold with a rerouted wiring harness and new airbag control unit, though it is not going to recall the vehicles already sold with the faulty cables.

Chairman of Euro NCA Claes Tingvall said: 'Both of these cars have achieved a four-star rating. However, as new cars, we might have expected them to perform even better. It is worrying that Euro NCAP's tests revealed potential problems in cars which were already in production and on sale to the public. Nissan are to be congratulated for modifying cars already sold. We believe that all customers should expect to get their cars modified when such weaknesses have been discovered."

The RAV4 scored well in the pedestrian protection tests, however, achieving three stars. The Land Rover Discovery scored just one star in this test; the Note and Kalos scored two.

there was something about this in the swedish News.. it effected the swedes to.. and the prius had some electric prob to..

so no more happy days for toyota

The airbag is faulty and they are not going to recall the cars!!!

Even the EuroNCAP spokesman pin points Toyota for their behaviour:

"We believe that all customers should expect to get their cars modified when such weaknesses have been discovered"

Now i wonder what Bozzor has to say about this.:D

Yep. I knew it! I knew it Toyota's ads stressing the reliability & safety of Toyota cars would hit it back like boomerang. MB has the same problem.

We have debated the issue in some other thread - I even posted some articles about the reasons for Toyota going down in reliability ... HERE

But ... Remember NCAP tests of BMW 5er? The car scored 3 stars (also due to some airbag problems) and when tested again it scored only 4 stars. But BMW never advertised the NCAP stars (not in Europe) like Toyota does.

The key phrase is "not going to recall the vehicles with the faulty cables" , imagine Mercedes doing the same or BMW or Audi? The news would be all over the net by now while in this case no site (except the one i mention above) has said anything like they are keeping a secret or something.

BTW a major Greek newpaper had an article the other day about how a faulty steering wheel shaft in many Toyota models was the cause of many accidents here in Greece where numerous people have been reported to die after loosing control of their vehicle. In Toyota's press release for the recall they said that it was only a minor problem and no accidents had been reported. Pathetic.

Yeah, this could be a bit problematic: preseving the super-reliabilty image / myth (and not launcihng image-hurting & costy recall) on expence of potential safety of driver / passengers.

Bad move from Toyota!

:eusa_doh:

I reckon they should recall as well. On the other hand, they resubmitted another RAV-4 and the airbags went off correctly. They may or may not have modified it. I think the cable was still damaged though, which supposedly isn't the best outcome.

I think one reason why BMW hasn't advertised its "improved" 4-star result coudl be that almost every European car at any cost above "average family" gets 5 stars.
