DUSSELDORF (awp International) - The electric car pioneer Tesla is pushing on to the European market: "We want this year to open offices in Milan, Paris, Copenhagen and Zurich," announced the new European head of the U.S. start-up company, Cristiano Carlutti, on Tuesday in an interview with the Internet edition of the "Handelsblatt".

To the existing offices in Munich, London and Monaco more could be added as the year proceeds. "We are also looking in Frankfurt and Hamburg for suitable locations and wish to show presence as quickly as possible," said the former Fiat board member.

The aim is to increase the proportion of cars sold in Europe to around half of total sales. Tesla has only been active in Europe since the summer of 2009, a year longer than in America, it said in the report.

A week ago, the niche player, in which the German car maker Daimler, along with its anchor shareholder in Abu Dhabi acquired a ten per cent share, reported the construction of its 1,000 th Roadster sports car. 50 copies so far went to Germany, while 180 were sold in all of Europe.

The companies consider Germany as its second most important market after the United States, where Tesla operates seven showrooms.

I have seen a few Swedish reviews on the Tesla. All done in Sweden and very positive. I think the concept is wonderful - bring sporty EV:s and I will join the cult! Hybrids are a bit like being bisexual.

Tesla launched its round-the-world Odyssey of Pioneers tour in Switzerland a few weeks ago and the electric Roadster arrives in Budapest this week. Budapest is important in the history of the electric automaker's namesake, Nikola Tesla, because it was while living in the Hungarian capitol that he conceived the alternating current induction motor in 1882. That same kind of motor is what powers today's Roadster.

While in Budapest, Tesla (the company) will hold a VIP reception in honor of Tesla (the legendary inventor). Prospective buyers will also have an opportunity to take test drives in the battery-powered sports car. So far, the tour has covered almost 1,000 miles on its way to Milan, Italy. The tour continues until October.

Tesla to sell electric sports car in Japan

Taro Koyano / Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondent

NEW YORK--Tesla Motors Inc., a U.S. automaker specializing in electric vehicles, will launch its high-end Roadster electric sports car in Japan in early May.

This is the first time a foreign automaker will release an electric vehicle in the Japanese market. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. began domestic sales of its i-MiEV electric vehicle last July, while Nissan Motor Co. will launch an electric vehicle in December. The move by the Silicon Valley-based automaker likely will intensify competition in Japan's electric vehicle market.

Tesla said Wednesday that its two-seater, right-hand drive Roadster would be put on the market in Japan. According to the automaker, the vehicle can travel 380 kilometers per charge and accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 3.7 seconds.

In the United States, the vehicle is priced at 101,500 dollars (9.4 million yen), while the vehicle sold in Japan will cost about 18 million yen. Tesla was established in 2003, and has since sold over 1,000 vehicles in the United States and Europe.

Tesla has been active in making alliances with other major automakers and manufacturers. The company is funded by German automaker Daimler AG and it announced in January a plan to jointly develop high-efficiency lithium ion batteries with Panasonic Corp.

Tesla Motors To Construct Manufacturing Plant in Europe

Even though work on the 10 million square feetGigafactory hasn't commenced yet, Tesla wants to extend its operations with a new factory in Europe. According to Elon Musk, the European assembly plant will see the green light once Tesla sales in this part of the world reach 160,000 cars per year, which is a pretty ridiculous figure considering that only 7,535 Model S vehicles have been assembled from January 1st to April 30th of 2014.

As a further matter, the American EV constructor just marked its first ever profitable quarter and doesn't expect to sell more than 35,000 cars by the end of the year. Mind our frankness, but this is just the typically unrealistic Elon Musk jibber-jabber. The upcoming Model X crossover and the $35,000 smaller brother of the Model S are still light years away from entering mass production, while the Supercharger network is still in its infancy on European soil.

After personally handing over the keys to the first U.K. customers of the right-hand drive Tesla Model S just a week ago, Musk declared for the media that he plans to open a R&D center in the United Kingdom "either next year or the year after," and also expand the final assembly plant located in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Back in April, the Tesla CEO declared at a Beijing conference that his company will most likely build a local plant in China in the next three - four years. By doing so, Tesla will be able to go around the 25 percent import tax and sell cheaper cars on a competitive market with increasing demand for pure-electric drive luxury cars.

We remind you that the Palo Alto-based manufacturer currently builds only one car bearing the Model S nameplate at its Fremont, California plant. It's a four-door luxury sedan with an electric motor the size of a watermelon, but it can do the 0 to 60 mph run in just 4.2 seconds thanks to 416 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of instant torque available on the P85 variant. And theoretically, you can travel 265 carbon-free miles on a single charge, which is far better than other pure-electric models available nowadays. But whether the Model S will keep its crown as the best EV around, only time and how rival manufacturers will use Tesla's patents will tell.

As for the Model X electric SUV, Musk is adamant the new nameplate will be launched Stateside in the summer of 2015, while deliveries are expected to start by the end of the year. As for the yet unnamed baby Model S, the entry-level offering from Tesla is expected to be launched in three years time, sport a sticker price of around $35,000 and have 20 percent smaller dimensions than its bigger brother.
