E90 3 series a huge sales success - 85% up over E46

Whoa! I thought it would sell, but not that well. I'm sure BMW is thankful since it's their most important car.

True, the 3 series is arguably what BMW are better at than anyone else and this new E90 has big shoes to fill, which, it appears to be doing admirably.

You know, this new E90 is growing on me more and more, and I can't wait to see touring and coupé versions in the metal.

The Munich-based carmaker said it sold 94,622 new 3-Series saloons since the model's relaunch in March -- 85 percent more than were sold of the previous-generation model in the same time period after its launch in April 1998 (51,155).

Didn't read the article but is there any one clear factor to which they attribute this huge increase? Is it simply because production output was immediatly higher from the outset of the new model's introduction?

Excellent for BMW, this model change was a great move, and a greater design, people love the car, and needed something newer looking, excellent move for BMW! They deserve the sales!

... yes Alex and you know it's not just a nicely made, or attractive vehicle - it simply drives beautifully too. I'd love a 330i. I love the ride / handling trade-off of the car and the way that naturally aspirated N52 engine just responds in any gear from just below 2000 rpm too... amazing for a straight six which are not traditionally known for the low-down lugging ability.

No wonder this thing is selling like hotcakes, it's just such a complete car.

I cant get enough of them. As soon as they come in they sell by the next day. Believe it or not 325i sells better than the 330i. Possibly because rising gas prices and cheaper price. But, yes the three is an excellent car. The 330i is one of the best handling cars I've driven.

As a E46 lover I disliked the design of the E90 when I first saw it but now I have finnaly swallowed and digested the design and I'm actually loving it. Fresh and modern but not too Bangleized like the rest of the BMW line up. :usa7uh:

85% more E90 cars sold than E46 ones in the same after-launch period!

What a shame, I'm sure the next C class will have no trouble unseating the 3 and watching it crack it's arse on the floor.

thats funny. Because the C class never sold as well as the 3. So will see some attemps by mercedes but, they'll probably just make a fool out of themselves like they always do.

Now really, dont troll. ;)

3-series is just like S-class. 3-serie always selling more cars than C-class and S-class selling more cars than 7-series. So stuttgarter, dont be so sure ;)

I'm not so sure about that. The 3er is a very good car which isn't over expensive either. It takes more than sweat and money to beat a best seller.

Well BMW have been no 1 since the '60s with New Generation, of witch the most famous was the 2002 (Turbo). :t-drive:
And every succesor was a better car overall and better sold too. Competitors have finally wise up in the '80s or '90s but nevertheless BMW was always ahead...and will continue to be. :eusa_clap

In the US the 3 series has great residuals and therefore beats many on a lease program which is the majority of the sales. Makes a big difference in the sales dept.

What?!
From what I know it was like this, at best the 3er sold ~560 000 in 2001, from this ~100 000 in the USA. So even without USA sales the 3er would have been no. 1.
And the models that created BMWs reputation before 3 series, like the 1500, 1600, 1800 of the New Generation weren't even sold in the USA, but had build a reputation for BMW in Europe. If it wouldn't have been for the 2002, the 1800 would have been THE 60s classic.
And as far as design goes until the bangalized models all bimmers were evolutions of design from the 1500.
So my point is that BMW has an experience, image and reputation in this market segment that others do not.
And by the way, brits for example, buy about ~50 000 3ers a year ( 1/2 of USA) at a population of 1/5 of the USA. That makes the 3er a sales contender for the Ford Mondeo sales (numericaly speaking).
So don't over blow the importance of the US market int the case of the 3er.

The US is important in every car market, and the US holds a large number of sales. Its not a question of which country sold more or less, its a matter of who sold how many.

As for what you know Mr.Ford Mondeo, feel free to list the numbers that you claim and information source.

Matt is Bomb.... I second that! :t-crazy2:

In the states the E90 (325i, and 330i) sold 31565 units since released here. I'd say that a great number considering the total sold everywhere was 94,622. That is not 1/5 that is 1/3rd plus the US got it later than Europe right?!
