Driverless cars: A bad joke or the future?

One watches the hands-free autonomous Google car, looks so easy, one asks, why it can take so long for some ideas or technologies to reach the marketplace? May be, because serial autonomous cars must really be able to drive autonomous; in more difficult situations, than on empty roads in Silicon Valley.

Well if other cars on the road has the autonomous driving ability, these sort of situation will not happen. Situation like the one you posted is exactly the reason why autonomous car is needed.

I know it's necessary, but just not for me.

I would like a car that is focused on driving but that is capable of driving itself for those parts of town where you stop and go at an average speed of 1 km/h

But I also am a bit scared of hackers :D

Is easy to imagine situations where autonomous driving can be a benefit. It's nothing wrong to have the ability even when it is not used everywhere. I believe everybody would agree, when I say that the technology of autonomous driving cars should be sold, if it operates at a safe level.

Auto pilots in aircrafts are a favourite argument for realizing autonomous driving. It is not told that doensn't matter, flying suddenly a mile to the left or right, up or down. Autonomous driving cars are confronted with other vehicles come towards on narrow roads or in road construction sites, by night and sudden heavy rain. All visual sensors will fail and bringing down the entire system. Can you realize, how much head-on collisions could be happen. Engineers have to consider these situations, before they launch an serial autonomous driving car to the public.

Or regarding the route. What happens, when the calculated route don't exist anymore, because there is fire and road closed or the existing bridge was completely demolished and should be replaced? How should autonomous driving cars should act to the situation on the video below?

Your opinion is ok at all, but lacked the technical understanding of the process.

Nope, I have never raised the example of auto pilots in air crafts as an example to support autonomous driving because it is not a valid comparison.

Current navigation system can already calculate alternative routes based on traffic and road conditions. Obviously for autonomous driving cars to work, a holistic approach need to be taken, which requires car companies to work with governments, town planners, and tech companies to develop a safe, workable environment so that the risk of accidents will be minimized.

Actually, members here are quite intelligent and they have a solid understanding of automotive technologies. so it is not necessary for me to spell out what everyone know already. However we do get the occasional "new" member suffering from inferiority complex, but fortunately they usually "go away" before they outstay their welcome.

What?

requires car companies to work with governments, town planners, and tech companies

That should not be difficult, we should have autonomous driving cars very soon.

However we do get the occasional "new" member suffering from inferiority complex, but fortunately they usually "go away" before they outstay their welcome.

Sounds, you are talking about yourself. You're the only one getting crazy when faced with different opinions.

Carlos Ghosn said Nissan will have cars that "can navigate without driver intervention in nearly all situations, including complex city driving." So the cars will be ready soon but the laws and regulations probably won't be.

Keep trying, maybe some day you will get better at it.

Your Link confirms the statements I made and sorry, you didn't understand, what he is talking about.
What you think he is talking about, he isn't. Carlos Ghosn speaks about the things will happen next years: 'Driver Assistance Systems' bringing different systems together, Ghosn: 'We're looking at taking the existing technology to the next level, where the driver can cede some control – essentially hands-free driving – while continuing to monitor the car's operation. Much of this is near-term technology, but it will come in waves, a feature at a time.'.
His statements about autonomous driving cars as you understand it, is here:
'But that is much further into the future – at least a decade away. In fact, I expect the technology will be perfected well before it hits the street, because there are a host of regulatory, legal and security issues that must be resolved first.'

You've shown again, I'm right.

Not taking sides here but I think Marc-1 has a point. Autonomous cars get freaked out with their surroundings easily. They react weirdly to human drivers.

We need cars that can drive among humans. Otherwise they will make traffic even worse acting like someone on his/her driving lessons.

Full autonomous is years if not decades away

Accident reports are available online now. :)

I'd like to see an autonomous car drive around my home village where STOP signs are decorative and the right of way goes to the native residents by order of age.

:D

Either the Tesla is so advanced that it has conscience of its own existance, ending up suicidal after realizing that it doesn't have a proper, combustion engine, or what my father told me when I got my driver's license is true:

A car is a weapon, you can easily get yourself killed, or worse, kill somebody else. Handle it with care and responsibility.

Driving shouldn't be let to machines.

Autonomous cars can work in a controlled traffic environment such as city traffic lights and slow speeds as well as help relieve stress on highways on long journeys but in some city driving scenarios such as 4 way yield and stop intersections as well as entering traffic circles it will be dangerous.
