S-Class W221 Design: WW220 vs. WW221

The Mercedes-Benz chassis code W221 is the fifth generation S-Class, produced from August 2005 until June 2013. The W221 S-Class was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as the successor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and the predecessor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).

so if they only change the front bumper without no fog lights , its gonna look better ????
that makes sence
so that means the arches r not the bad thing, cuz if u look at the amg u see a totally better looking car
Why the attitude?
I don't have a problem with the arches really... the only thing I really hate about the S class is the front bumper (more specifically the lights and air intake).

so if you take out what I hate, you end up with a car I like.

However one wants to cut it the W221 S-Class is more aggressive and masculine than the W220 with the sport package!! I`m running against the clock and don`t have time to post but here are some good pics for compare
I like both models BTW! it all started with the S-Class and it shall remain

Watching these pics i have agree once again..the W221 looks superb and miles ahead of any other saloon with the AMG package IMO

I like the grill and the lights and the total front view, head on. From a front 3/4 side view and side view the entire car seems to "lean forward and down" like it is front heavy. The line of the fender flares do not flow from the front to the back but abruptly curve to the ground in a strongly defined semi-circle.

The rear is again fine full rear view, but when I view it from the 3/4 angle or full side, all I see is that trunk lid sticking up and the line from the seam where it meets the body. The rear flares again have a "stuck on" look and at the rear seem to indicate that the designers said we need the flares for "sizzle" but how do we blend them to the rear moulding of the car.

Sorry...just my feelings from the images I have seen. When I see one in person I will take a second look.

Yeah with AMG package it looks like a freaking space ship and without it, it looks like fat Britney Spears without make up.

I know this : the new S is a killer

Well, I wasn't a big fan of the W221 until I saw it in real life and even got to drive it. I've experienced the W220 thoroughly before experiencing the W221 and I was pretty impressed by the W220.

I guess the main difference is that the W220 looked "classy and elegant" while remaining true to the conservative Mercedes image. You bought an S-Class for recognition, but knew that the design wouldn't be as catchy as say a BMW 7-series. Conservative is the word here.

The W221 takes this to a hole new level. Like I said, I'm liking the fender flares because they add character to the car, something the W220 S-Class needed. When I reviewed the internal DCX W221 salesman guide while working at MB over the summer, I came across a market research entry that I found very interesting. CUSTOMERS COMPLAINED THAT THE W220 JUST DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH PRESENCE. I suppose MB tried to inject that into the W221 through the fender flares. IMO, it worked. The W221 now has presence while still looking lovely, typical S-Class and futuristic at the same time. I even detect a little conservatism in the design. The only thing I hate is the rear aspect. Horrible. The Maybach looks better from behind IMHO.

I like both the W220 and W221, but overall, I have to go with the W221. It just oozes with quality and luxury and offers presence and a more sporty drive than the W220. :usa7uh:

I'm going to go against the grain here. I personally do not like the W220 sports package. I much prefer just your plain ole non sport package S430 or 500. I was driving on the freeway the other night in silver. It's just almost timeless. If only it had the interior of the W221, I think then it would be perfect.

I agree Zach, I also think the w220 sports package slightly detracts from the elegance of the w220. Keep the car sparkling clean with a nice set of alloys, and you stil have a damn good looking automobile.

I love the sport package on the W220, if only they slightly elaborated it into the W221 with the W221 interior, the car would be outstanding.

I like the W220 sport package to but I always thought the front spoiler was a little loud looking. The pre-facelifted W220 sport package had a better front spolier IMO.

I think the w220 is one nice car but when you compare it to the 7er it just lack the presence.on the contrary w221 restored the presence of the w140 for that I prefer the w221

Visual comparison with Wimmer's pictures: S320 CDI (W220) vs S500 (W221). Both cars have "similar colors"...

Both are nice. The W220 has a nicer rear, but the W221 is just so much more imposing. (y)

IMO the W220 is the better looking car!

I loved the W221 when I first saw it in the pictures and was really excited to see it, but when I saw it in the flesh, it looked dulll and boring (now I don't think much of it) and even in AMG kit, which looks so good in the pictures, didn't stand out at all in the flesh, I didn't see much of a difference at all, unless I good close to the car!

The W220 looked good wether it was in AMG kit or not, it had a timeless design, and after seeing the pictures of Jack's new car, I love it even more!

It's a shame I couldn't get the W220 with the interior of the W221!

i love the w220 exterior but i think that the leaps made on the interior are amazing in the new w221
i cant say taht i like the exterior of the w221 after ive seen it in flesh but thats just my opion
so ill take a w220 with the amg package please

Personally, I think that the W220 was gorgeous, but the W221 takes it to a whole new level.

Yeah the car is still very handomse. I have seen a few facelifted ones these days and it seems like the car hasn't aged a bit.
