Just under 4 months old and Nikon already introduces an upgraded version or replacement. The Nikon D40X.

There was a lot of speculation from the Nikon Camp on a new DSLR to be announced. Everyone, including me, thought that the new DSLR, or at least hoped, would be the D3. Well it seems that Ken Rockwell was right.

Here you go:

UpdateNikon has also just introduced a new lens

There are rumors that at 2am est Nikon will hit the masses with the D3. However, this is not confirmed and may not actually happen. Either way, stay up and see :D

It seems that Nikon is making a move to capture a mega market away from Canon. Nikon is now offering a 6 megapixel D40 and a 10.1 megapixel D40x. I am not sure if the D40x is suppose to replace the D40, but either way, Nikon has two little cameras in a sector that is not touched by Canon. One can argue that Nikon is going after the 400D. Who knows?

i dont know why ppl think the D40x is replacing the D40, it is just a higher end model that will both be sold .D40 to take on the EOS350 and the D40x to take on the EOS400D.

very smart marketing decision as i think Nikon finally realised they can only take canon in the Entry level,Mid level, and not the professional level.

I really like the concept of the D40X, was impressed by the D40 because of it's size, not too impressed by the megapixel count though, but this fixes it perfectly.

BTW, the way I see it is the D40X is equivalent to the old D50, and the D80 is equivalent to the D70s!

The D40 is like a new model fitting below all these models!

Canon is a great brand. I have never had anything against it, as many of my posts here reflect. However, I prefer Nikon because of its ergonomics and feel. Hold a D200 or D2X and see what I mean.

I would like to get the new 1Ds Mark III.

The D200 by the way is back in the shop. I am hoping that Nikon will be able to fix this problem. Apparently this time they are changing major parts. Who knows what will happen when it comes back.

About the ergonomics...

I went to a store last week and held the D80 and compared it to the 400D, and the D80 did indeed feel alot better. But with a battery grip on the 400D there isn't that much difference I think. Didn't think of exploring the button positioning at the moment though.

I may. Actually the camera itself is as big as a D2X which is what I love. Unfortunately I don't think I could ever like Canon. I will definitely give it a try, but Nikon is very good and I am waiting to see what the D3 brings.

Are u really expecting a powerful camera from nikon to take on the 1DM3?
The way i see it there next generation camera will still be behind the 1dm2.....and especially since they rolled a few entry levels, i dont think they would have focussed on a high range super D3, Maybe a slight improvement over its predecessor....

just a thought..

Surely what matter more to micheal is lenses, and seeing as he has a nikon camera, I assume he's got quite a few nikon lenses, which would be costly to replace with canon lenses!

Ehhh...go to dpreview.com and read up on the Sony FF sensor speculation and all of that information. Canon took a leap forward against Nikon a while ago. Remember, Nikon is a really small company and they do make excellent cameras for their size. Canon is huge, and they may stay in front for a while. However, Nikon is offering many new cameras that I don't think Canon has a response for yet. Nikon is really catching up in the entry level segment and they may take over. If they build a strong relantionshp down there, they may be building the stepping stones for the future pro photographers. Now, that brings me to the D3. I am sure that Nikon is going to produce a very powerful camera. If you read very closely the reviews on the D2X when compared to the Mark II, many reviewers believe that the Canon is a great product, but for 7k you'd be just as good with the D2X. I really think Nikon will bring in a very good product, and a lot of people don't see that or expect that from Nikon. Just wait and see.

Also saying that they will be behind especially since they rolled in new entry-level cameras is really a bad argument. What does that have anything to do with being ahead? I really don't understand that logic. Also saying that no matter what their camera will still be behind the 1D MII is a really biased comment. If anything it will be behind the newest product out by Canon but not an older one.

Sony, Pentax, Olympus, and Fuji are big players in this field as well, and as technology gets better, they get better, and the competition grows. I don't mean to insult your intelligence but it seems that you just look at things in the now. Canon pretty much has all of the sports photogs taken and it seems they will continue this trend for long. Nevertheless, what you don't take into consideration is that many photographers go with what is the best and up and coming. I have read countless times about Nikon users changing over to Canon not because they don't like Nikon anymore but rather because their business demands it. So, if Nikon comes through with what everyone has been talking about--an FF sensor--then they may indeed tie or even be in the lead when compared to Canon. I think you do not cut Nikon enough slack. Nikon are just as good or even better than Canon at times. You should go and pick one up if you haven't already.

I do not have to many lenses but you are surely right. Many people say it is not the body but rather the quality of the glass. Glass here means lenses. I think that lenses, good quality lenses which both Nikon and Canon make, make a huge difference in quality of prints when used correctly.

well, u mite be right michael, if nikon produce a powerful camera on par with the Mark2 or better , they will be able 2 grab some market back, but i have noticed lots of people complain about the price of Nikons compared 2 Canon and the specs u receive..

its true i neva tried out a nikon, its just that here in southern africa Nikon is more or less non-existent, Canon rules the pro, and midlevel market...only a select few camera shops handle the Nikons...though mostly for the international market....

I hope nikon comes out with a good camera, so canon can stop making tons of profit and make some good entry level cameras coz they have been thinking of the pro market mostly, and thats what i feel nikon is doing now, concentratin more on entry level than super pro level..

and with the sensors from Sony, i think Sony will not share there FF sensors initially to gain some marketshare..

Have you ever held the Mark 2 Mike?

Daniel's Mark 2 with the 100-400, flash and everything weighs like a dumbell so ergonomics are vital for a steady grip. And despite the weight, it sits in your hand perfectly! And the Mark 3 is probobly even better.

I suppose we will have to see what happens. I truly hope that Nikon, not because I like them but rather for competitive reasons, takes out a really good camera. I wasn't aware that their presense in SA was not that strong. I could imagine Canon being strong because it is Canon and wherever there are pictures to be taken Canon will be there.

Yes I have. I know that the Marks have great ergonomics, but I still like the Nikon D2X. I am telling you, if Canon made the ergonomics a tad bit better, I think I would jump boats. The 350D and 400D are microscopic and that is something I really do not like.
