  • Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed references the design language of legendary racing cars
  • Exclusive world premiere on the water as part of the Formula 1™ Monaco Grand Prix
  • Small series model to debut next year
  • Formula 1™ feeling for two people
Exciting, energising and breathtaking – the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed concept is the highlight in the run-up to the Formula 1™ Monaco Grand Prix. The radical design of a completely open, two-seater performance car without a roof or windscreen is a tribute to motor racing. The concept car provides a preview of the first model in the highly limited Mercedes-Benz Mythos series. The world premiere of the Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed took place in an exclusive setting on the sidelines of the Formula 1™ Monaco Grand Prix. The vehicle was unveiled on a floating pontoon in the harbour of the principality and also impressed Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

“The Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed offers a glimpse of what is probably the most direct way to experience performance and driving pleasure. Radically open, neither a roof nor the windscreen separate the two passengers from the elements. You can experience light, air and passion unfiltered with all your senses. As the concept of our first Mythos vehicle, it embodies the highest level of exclusivity. Design elements such as the HALO also create a Formula 1 feeling. There is therefore no better place for its world premiere than Monaco.”
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes Maybach divisions

The Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed celebrates the unique tradition of Mercedes‑Benz with pure and uncompromising race-car design, innovative materials and modern technology. The strictly limited series of 250 units will only be available to the most dedicated Mercedes‑Benz enthusiasts and collectors. Inspired by legendary race cars, the combination of unrivalled racing aesthetics and highly dynamic performance makes the Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed a unique driving machine for connoisseurs. It embodies the “pinnacle of exclusivity” from Mercedes-Benz in the top segment.

HALO system instead of A-pillar
One highlight is the HALO system which replaces the conventional A-pillar on the vehicle. This element is a direct derivative of the premier class of motorsport and has been part of every Formula 1™ vehicle since 2018. It protects the driver's head in the event of an accident. The name HALO describes its shape. As in Formula 1™, the safety system in the Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed consists of a bracket that is connected to the body of the vehicle. This aerodynamically optimised component serves to protect the occupants, just as in Formula 1™. Included are two aerodynamically optimised helmets specially designed and manufactured for the Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed. The field of vision as in Formula 1™ thus becomes a reality for two people. Neither roof, windscreen nor side windows separate them from their surroundings. The interior adds further highlights, with its unique colour and equipment concept as well as a custom clock designed by IWC Schaffhausen on the dashboard.

Design inspired by the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar
The Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed concept is a true performance car with an extremely low silhouette. Many design features were inspired by the Mercedes‑AMG ONE hypercar – technical, sharply cut visible carbon fibre parts in the lower section of the vehicle provide a strong contrast to the sensual, rounded shapes of the upper part of the vehicle.

The design of the wheels is characterised by the unique carbon fibre cladding on the front and rear wheel covers. The rear wheel covers are completely closed to improve aerodynamics. The front wheel covers are open to optimise airflow at the front end for brake cooling and downforce.

Typical of a sports car are the long bonnet and the very low front end with a pronounced “shark nose”. The front design is similar to the Mercedes‑AMG ONE with a wide lower air intake with AMG lettering and a dark, chrome-plated Mercedes star on the soft nose. Added to this is the aerodynamically optimised, sportive bonnet with an additional air outlet. Small, transparent deflectors at the front and sides direct the wind over the cockpit.

The design team's precision work can also be seen in the side-sill panelling with aero flics. The muscular shoulders above the wide-track rear wheels merge into the elegant boot lid and the width-emphasising rear apron.

Homage to legendary Mercedes models
Many other design details also pay homage to motorsport. The two flying buttresses behind the seats are reminiscent of legendary racing cars such as the 300 SLR, in which Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia in Italy – with a record average speed of an incredible 157 km/h on public roads.

The eye-catching paintwork – in a colour gradient from Le Mans red to graphite grey with a black AMG pattern – alludes to the colour scheme of the victorious Mercedes car at the 1924 Targa Florio race in Sicily. It was painted red, which was typically reserved for Italian vehicles. German race cars were traditionally painted white at the time. The red paint was meant to deter local fans from impeding the car’s progress in the race. The coup worked. After 6:32:37.4 hours and a race distance of 432 kilometers, the victorious Mercedes 2-litre race car with the number 10 crossed the finish line in first place with Christian Werner behind the wheel. The number 10 can also be found on the front wings of the Concept Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed and refers to that Targa Florio victory 100 years ago.

I like it!!

The exterior design is quite unique, especially the center rollover hoop. It will certainly look great in other colours instead of this 2 tone treatment. The interior changes with the black and white leather and wood transforms the mediocre standard interior of the SL into something that looks a whole lot special.

The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed celebrates the motorsport tradition of Mercedes-Benz with exciting racing car design, innovative materials and modern technology. The exclusive small series is strictly limited to 250 units.

Sports car design inspired by the Mercedes-AMG ONE Hypercar
The design of the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is characterized by the combination of a low silhouette, long bonnet and very low front section with a pronounced shark nose. The front is similar to the Mercedes-AMG ONE with a wide air intake and AMG lettering as well as a dark chrome-plated Mercedes star on the soft nose. Added to this is the aerodynamically optimized bonnet. The small, partially transparent deflectors on the front and sides also demonstrate the extensive fine-tuning work of the aerodynamics team: they keep annoying air turbulence away from the driver and front passenger. Aerodynamic, sharply drawn visible carbon elements in the lower part of the vehicle form a strong contrast to the sensual, rounded shapes of the upper part of the vehicle. The trunk lid and the rear diffuser are also aerodynamically optimized. Their shape takes the missing roof into account.

The design of the 21-inch forged aluminum wheels is characterized by the carbon fiber panels on the front and rear axles. The rear panels are completely closed, which reduces air resistance. The front panels are open to optimize the air flow at the front of the car and brake cooling. 275/35 R 21 tires are mounted on 9.5 JX 21-inch rims at the front, and 305/30 R 21 on 11.0 J x 21-inch rims at the rear.

The design team's fine work is also evident in the side sill panels with aero flics. The muscular shoulders above the rear wheels with a wide track flow into the elegant luggage compartment lid and the wide rear apron.

HALO system instead of A-pillar
Another highlight is the HALO system: It replaces the conventional A-pillars on the vehicle. This element is inspired by the premier class of motorsport. The HALO has been part of every Formula 1™ vehicle since 2018. It protects the driver's head in the event of an accident. The safety system in the Mercedes‑AMG PureSpeed consists of a sturdy tubular steel bar. It is firmly connected to the vehicle's body shell structure in a fork shape. The aerodynamically optimized component protects both passengers equally. This is why the fork only occurs behind the occupants. The Roll Over Protection System also contains two rigid roll bars that are hidden under the aerodynamic scoops. They are also part of the body shell structure. Interesting detail: The HALO is indirectly illuminated at the bottom with two narrow LED strips, taking the ambient lighting to a new dimension.

There are also two aerodynamically optimized helmets that are specially designed and manufactured for the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed. They are painted in the color of the car and have an intercom communication system. It enables uninterrupted conversations between the driver and passenger, even when driving fast. Smartphones can also be linked to the intercom system: the helmet speakers can also be used to make phone calls and listen to music.

Homage to legendary Mercedes models
Many other design details are also a tribute to motorsport. The two scoops behind the seats are decorated with AMG emblems and are reminiscent of legendary racing cars such as the 300 SLR. Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the Mille Miglia (1000 mile race) in Italy in 1955 with this. The exclusive Silver Arrow paintwork of the PureSpeed in mystic silver magno matches this.

The optional Motorsport Styling package offers a paint finish in a color gradient from Le Mans red to graphite gray with a black AMG pattern. This alludes to the color of the Mercedes winning car at the Sicilian Targa Florio automobile race exactly 100 years ago. The racing car was painted red - a color that was reserved for Italian makes at the time. German racing cars, on the other hand, were traditionally painted white. The red color was intended to prevent the German vehicle from being obstructed by Italian motorsport Tifosi. The coup worked: the Mercedes 2-liter racing car with the starting number 10 came first across the finish line, driven by Christian Werner. The starting number "10" can also be found on the front fenders of the Motorsport Styling package and indicates the victory 100 years ago.

Two-tone color and equipment concept
The interior sets further highlights with the classic, two-tone color and equipment concept in crystal white/black. AMG Performance seats with special leather upholstery and special decorative stitching offer perfect lateral support and an exclusive look. Their design, with flowing lines, is inspired by the air that flows around the vehicle. The multi-contour seat function and seat climate control increase comfort. The area behind the seats is designed with carbon. Integrated leather pads on the back pick up the flowing lines of the seats. The deep-pile AMG floor mats pick up the color, design and decorative stitching of the seats: the door sill panels are also covered in leather. The AMG Performance steering wheel consistently continues the two-tone interior concept.

Another highlight of the interior is the individual analogue clock designed by IWC Schaffhausen. It is prominently positioned in the middle of the dashboard and is housed in a drop-shaped case in glossy black on a base made of visible carbon. The base is so cleverly designed that the clock seems to be floating. The elegant timepiece has a PureSpeed-specific dial with AMG diamonds. The dial is illuminated for best readability at dusk and in the dark. The characteristic bezel emphasises the visual proximity to the legendary IWC Ingenieur line.

The Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system with 15 speakers and 1,170 watts of system power enables an authentic sound experience like at a summer open-air festival. In the center console, a plaque with the note “1 out of 250” indicates the limitation of the Mythos model.

A weather protection tarpaulin is available as standard to protect the parked car from the elements such as rain or storms. It is stretched over the interior including the HALO in the traditional way and attached to the wheel arches. In addition, every customer receives a tailor-made, PureSpeed-specific AMG Indoor Car Cover. With its breathable outer skin made of tear-resistant synthetic fiber fabric and the antistatic inner fabric made of flannel, it protects the vehicle in the garage from dust and scratches.

Body shell: AMG sports car architecture with composite aluminum structure
The PureSpeed is based on Mercedes-AMG's own sports car architecture. The chassis consists of an aluminum spaceframe with a self-supporting structure. The construction guarantees maximum rigidity and thus the perfect basis for precise driving dynamics and sporty body proportions. The intelligent mix of materials reduces weight. The materials used include aluminum, magnesium, fiber composites and steel. There are also carbon parts for the aero elements on the front and rear aprons and side skirts as well as the paneling behind the seats.

Sophisticated aerodynamics for unadulterated driving pleasure

The active aerodynamic elements include the extendable rear spoiler, which is seamlessly integrated into the rear lid. It changes its position depending on the driving situation. The control software takes numerous parameters into account: It includes the driving speed, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration and the steering speed in the calculation. The spoiler assumes five different angular positions from 80 km/h. Depending on the position, it can optimize driving stability or reduce air resistance.

The active aerodynamic element, which is hidden in the underbody in front of the engine, also contributes to the safe and dynamic driving behavior. This carbon profile, which weighs around two kilograms, reacts to the setting of the AMG driving programs and automatically extends downwards by around 40 millimeters at a speed of 80 km/h. This creates the so-called Venturi effect, which additionally sucks the car onto the road and reduces the lift on the front axle. The driver can feel this positively in the steering: the PureSpeed can be steered precisely in curves and drives very directional.

Additional aerodynamic elements on the underbody, similar to those on the AMG GT 63 PRO, help to compensate for the lack of a roof and thus improve downforce. The lift system on the front axle allows the PureSpeed to be raised at the front in front of thresholds or curbs.

Powerful and powerful: AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine
The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine delivers dynamic propulsion and excellent performance with a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Nm. Combined with the PureSpeed design concept, this creates a uniquely exciting driving experience because the radically open design makes even lower speeds subjectively feel significantly faster. But the objective values are also impressive: the sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h takes 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is 315 km/h. Added to this is the legendary AMG V8 engine sound, which can be experienced even more directly in the PureSpeed.

Wet starting clutch for the transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission combines an emotional gearshift experience with extremely short shift times. A wet start-up clutch replaces the torque converter. It reduces weight and, thanks to its lower mass inertia, optimises the response to accelerator commands, especially when accelerating and when changing loads.

More traction and driving stability: fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC+

The PureSpeed is equipped with the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The intelligent system combines the advantages of different drive concepts: the fully variable torque distribution on the front and rear axles ensures optimal traction at the physical limit as well as high driving stability and driving safety under all conditions.

Chassis and brakes: semi-active roll stabilization and optimal deceleration

The innovative AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with semi-active, hydraulic roll stabilization ensures the best possible contact with the road. Active hydraulic elements replace the conventional mechanical anti-roll bars and compensate for roll movements in a fraction of a second. The system enables optimal steering and load change behavior with typical AMG characteristics of driving behavior in terms of dynamics, precision and feedback for the driver. At the same time, it increases driving comfort when driving straight ahead and when driving over bumps. The wide track width on the rear axle increases agility, which is particularly noticeable on winding country roads.

The standard AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system guarantees excellent deceleration values and precise controllability. It impresses with short braking distances, sensitive response and high stability - even under extreme loads. The 6-piston fixed brake callipers at the front and 1-piston floating callipers at the rear are painted black and bear white AMG logos.

Active rear-axle steering: combines agility and stability
The PureSpeed is equipped with active rear-axle steering (HAL). Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100 km/h) as the front wheels. The system thus enables agile and stable driving behavior - characteristics that are in contrast to one another without rear-axle steering. Other advantages are easier vehicle control at the limit and less steering effort because the front-wheel steering ratio is more direct.

Looks like a cash grab to me, it hideous.

Unfortunately, a very common modus operandi practiced by automobile manufacturers nowadays appears to be "making our special, limited edition" sporting offerings appear as tacky and tasteless as at all possible. And M-B (AMG) is hardly the only example among German manufacturers. Genuine elegance is becoming an increasingly diminishing commodity.

BMW nailed it with the Skytop, the CSL was a flop. I don't believe Audi have released any limited production cash grabs. Porsche have launched too many to list.

I like it, its very different and totally off the charts. I like the mods to the interior but there are 2 things that I think Mercedes could have done better and that is put some leather on the steering wheel boss and change the door black shiny trim to the carbon fiber used on the dash. For a 250K Euro car, you don't expect to see black shiny cheap plastic on door trim.

Looks better in real life footage, but it should have had more power and a more bespoke interior and the SL680 should have gotten the V12. Mercedes gets it 7/10ths right and that simply isn't enough for like a million dollars.

M

I like the front end and wouldn't mind seeing it on future AMG "Mythos" editions. As for the rest: Tacky rubbish overload, which isn't...or at least shouldn't be...applied to a proper Mercedes-Benz or AMG.

I do also think Mercedes did an half arse job with this car. The interior should have been made more bespoke with unique trim and materials that made it look more special. It looks too much like a standard SL but only with different coloured seats.

I am really curious what will happen with the residuals.

I guess the SL680 won’t be much better than the SL63, because of the wrong engine.
