Maybe cause the electric power train is from Tesla
. Anyway it is a freaking compliance car, made to meet the California ZEV mandate. It was only sold in Ca and 7 other states this year. Supposedly goes for sale other in other states in 2015, but it is a mediocre car that exists for the wrong reasons.

Consumer Reports rarely minces words when it comes to its car reviews, and it calls the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive hatchback the least-efficient electric car on the market. Ouch.
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive hatchback has a sticker price of around $41,350 and while the hatchback does offer abundant cargo space and a clear view of the road, it isn’t enough to earn high marks from Consumer Reports.
The electric B-Class has an 80 mile range, but also offers what Mercedes is calling an extended Range Plus mode which will push the Merc an additional 20 miles, offering a maximum of 100 miles of driving range. Unfortunately, the B-Class Electric also doesn’t offer a DC fast charge option like its main competitor, the BMW i3, so it takes a full 3.5 hours to charge compared to the Bimmer, which can top off in about 30 minutes.
While the Range Plus mode is interesting, it did not help once Consumer Reports took the B-Class for a spin. The results were the B-Class running at 2.9 miles per kWh, or the equivalent of about 98 mpg. While 98 mpg would be great for a gasoline powered car, it is a very poor score for an electric vehicle, and it’s even worse than the 3.2 kWh of the much older Nissan LEAF, which has been on the market for four years now.
Consumer Reports found other problems too. Even with a drive system coming from Tesla, the independent magazine said the car felt dated with a noisy cabin, stiff suspension, and dull handling despite a healthy 177 horsepower engine. Additionally, one of the largest issues aside from the Range Plus mode that Consumer Reports had with the B-Class was with the regenerative brake system. The B-Class offers two regenerative brake modes, one called Drive Minus which boosts regenerative braking but is tricky to use effectively. The other mode is Drive Plus mode, which allows you to coast, but brings down the range extending benefits of regenerative brakes.
Consumer Reports is not alone in their negative view of the B-Class as Car and Driver had some choice words as well. In any event, the B-Class Electric Drive is available in California only for now, but will be more widlely available across the U.S. in 2015.

The battery can be charged using a standard 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt charging system that is available from Mercedes. The 240-volt system will charge the vehicle in about 3.5 hours. Safety features such as Attention Assist come standard and monitors the driver for signs of fatigue.

- Premium 1: The package costs $1,100 and adds a radar-based system to monitor the speed of the vehicle in front of you and adjust the car's regenerative braking so it recuperates as much energy as possible in order to extend the driving range of the battery. SiriusXM Radio with 6-month All Access trial, and keyless entry/start are also included.
- Premium 2: This package adds $3,000 to the price and gives you everything included with Premium 1 Package plus auto-dimming driver-side and inside rearview mirrors, 8-inch color freestanding display, HomeLink garage door opener, Bi-Xenon headlamps, and an upgraded Harman Kardon LOGIC7 sound system.
- Premium 3: This one comes with a hefty price tag—$5,500—but it includes all of this: In-dash DVD/CD player, Rearview camera, COMAND hard-drive navigation, advanced voice control, 5 years of SiriusXM Traffic and Weather services, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bi-Xenon headlamps, Harman Kardon LOGIC7sound system, auto-dimming driver-side and inside rearview mirrors, 8-inch color freestanding display and the HomeLink garage door opener.
- Interior: If you are looking only for an upgraded interior, this is the package for you. It runs $2,250 and upgrades the interior to heated leather seats and also adds Multicolor ambient cabin lighting and top-stitched MB-Tex to the upper dash and door trim.

MB confirmed B 250 e production will end in the third quarter. The new EQ models may be planned for all Mercedes-Benz Cars factories.

Built at the Rastatt plant in Germany, the B-Class Electric Drive went on sale back in December 2013 and it never really took off in terms of sales. Only 3,651 units have been sold since the model’s launch, so the EV’s demise doesn’t actually come as a big surprise. In an interview with Automotive News, Mercedes USA spokesman, Rob Moran, confirmed the zero-emissions hatchback is being put out to pasture and will effectively be axed in the third quarter of the year.
There’s another reason why the B-Class ED is being phased out as Mercedes has to retool the factory to get it ready for the next generation of its compact models launching in 2018 with the all-new A-Class hatchback. Meanwhile, the conventionally powered B-Class models will remain in production.
While there’s no replacement in sight for the EV, Mercedes is prepping a whole family of electric vehicles as part of its newly established “EQ” sub brand. No less than 10 cars without combustion engines are going to be launched until 2025 following what will be a massive investment of €10 billion ($11.7B).
The company with the three-pointed star badge has already previewed what’s to come in terms of electrification by unveiling the Concept EQ at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. While that one was a crossover, it is believed Mercedes will unveil a second EQ concept in Frankfurt this September to preview a production hatchback EV set to compete with the BMW i3. Some say it’s due to arrive in road-going form sometime in 2020.
As a refresher, the U.S.-spec B250e weighs in at a hefty 3,924 pounds (1,780 kilograms) and comes with a 28-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that has enough juice for 87 miles.
