BTW and O/T, the SL's $15K-car HVAC system is preposterous. The CLS has the same one (it's from the W204 C, now shared throughout the range). M-B put the classiest and most high end HVAC unit in the E-Class, then cost cut it out of the other models, also, it looks MUCH better and more "fit" with the wood trim. Just yesterday, a Member on an M-B Board who owns and E and CLS was complaining about how cheap the CLS's HVAC was compared to his E:

I wonder why they would do that.....oh well.

Definitely me ;)

No, you don`t understand me. It`s not between me and Klier, it`s between me and you and Klier as a team. And also , not only us. It`s a general opinion. Who can tell in the whole world for everybody that the Sls is more beautiful than the SL ?

Haha, it was a joke Morrison, take it easy buddy.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion of course! And I'm not in a team with anyone on this forum. I'm with people who share my opinion from subject to subject.

I think it's just a matter of taste? What's inferior about the one on the right?

Honestly, this is a dilemma. Porsche convertible is necessarily the 981 Boxster S for me. The 991 Cabriolet is a proper grand-tourer car, like the SL. But it is that sort of car you never remember to mention it. The R231 is one of the ugliest SLs of all time. The overhangs are huge. That is the same problem with the F13 6er Cabriolet. The R230 pre-facelift is prettier, in my humble opinion. The interior is a tough choice. That combination of 'CGT plus Panny' is perfect, but the SLS airplane console is fantastic as well. Vote for 991.

SL's HVAC from Mercedes-Benz Luxury Cars: Explore, Build & Compare Sedans, SUVs, Coupes, Wagons

:D

The E-Class HVAC cluster would look pretty good if it was fitted to the new CLS, however it would look totally out of place in the SL!
I agree, MB needs to come up with something different. The dials do add some sport, manual-control feel to the picture compared to the bottons which might be the reason thay are fitted to the sports cars. The botton controls is pure luxury.

991 911 all the way, without zero hesitation.

Usually, I'm pro-coupe, but with the 911 I would make an exception. That's the car I would love to drive with the sun out, top-down carving around SoCal's canyon roads. I doubt that I'll be spending more time drag-racing rather than tooling around so I'm not terribly concerned with any weight penalty having a soft-top might incur. A 911 S Cabrio just checks off practically every item on the list. Plus the 911 looks great from every single angle. I'm afraid I can't say that about the SL.

From the side profile pic, there's too much front body volume in the SL. And having the person sitting there makes the car look bigger than it ought to be.

From up front angle, the SL class lacks any svelte-ness. It's very much in your face with its headlights and grille. Unless it's a proper AMG SL, SL's ought to be more refined and less aggressive.

Now, with the interior, I contend the 911 has a small lead, mostly because I'm tired of seeing the same climate controls and radio in every single M-B, save for the S and CL class. Yes, Porsche use the same stuff too across their line-up, but their stuff was introduced with the Panamera so it's not long in the tooth as M-B interior furnishings. However, in the SL I do like the shifter, HVAC vents, gauges, and overall layout and it looks rather quality. But I also like the 911's quality layout too.

Now outside of styling, the 911 has a slight edge over the SL....the flat-six wins out over the V8 by slight margin, mostly because it has more character. I imagine the 911 will handle better yet give up little in comfort. They will probably offer comparable cargo utility. Cost maintenance will be more with the 911, but if I had the money to reasonably buy a 911, I think it would be worth it.

Give me the 911 and I'll be a happy camper. :)

SLS>SLK>SL.

For the sake of being on topic though, I'd choose the 911 w/o hesitation.

That to the right is the CLS unit btw (originally from the W204 POS pre-facelift interior, and now shared from the bottom entry cars unfortunately to the top, with the exception of the E's), which looks (and physically feels, and technologically operates) about 2 segments under the E's unit to the left. Why? Co$$$$t Cutting$$$$$$$$$$$. :D :D
