Borgward Comeback of Borgward?

Borgward Group AG was a Chinese-German automobile brand established in 2010 with headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. The company carried the name and logo of the former German brand Borgward. Design and engineering was located in Germany, but the cars were produced in China by Foton Motor.
The Borgward SUV may seat up to 7 and be roughly 4.70 m long, 10 cm longer than the Q5/GLC and 10 cm shorter than the Sauvana, according to the latest rumors. Einar Hareide is the designer. :)

Borgward BX7
Looks very German
Borgward is officially back in business with the BX7 crossover which unsurprisingly looks very German, but with a Buick grille.

With some changes to the front grille, this could be easily mistaken for an Audi as Borgward wants to show its German roots even though the name is now in fact owned by China-based Foton Motor.

We don't have any official details to go with this single image, but recently we’ve learned the BX7 is going to be offered with an array of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, although specifics are not known at this point.

The company's official website has a countdown for the model’s launch which will take place in about four days from now at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

[update]

Auto Bild has managed to obtain technical details and it seems the crossover is 4.7 meters long and will be able to carry up to seven people. Upon launch it will be offered with a 224 PS 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine teamed up with a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox sending power to a four-wheel drive system equipped with an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch provided by BorgWarner.

Also at IAA there's going to be a plug-in hybrid derivative featuring a combined output of 401 PS thanks to the same combustion engine teamed up with an electric motor and a battery pack capable of providing a maximum electric range of 55 km (34 miles). This one too has a four-wheel drive version, only this time the conventional motor drives the front wheels whereas the electric motor powers the rear axle.

In terms of practicality, the BX7 can work as a five-, six- or a seven-seater and will offer up to 1,344 liters of storage space if the rear seats are folded. It gets a 12.3-inch infotainment system providing support for Wi-Fi hotspot and smartphone connectivity while on the safety side there’s going to be a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, braking assistant with pedestrian protection and a collision assistant.

Initially, the Borgward BX7 will be available in China and emerging markets starting 2016, but Europe will also get the crossover later on. According to preliminary data, the vehicle will carry a standard price tag of around €26,000 in Germany.

It looks quite fine and the price is very descent - basically it sits in Kia price territory.

Any pics of the interior?

Thanks Rainer.

Now, one more question. Where are the rear passengers going to put their feet, given the lack of any such space in the above photograph?

:D

You see quite a lot of VAG inspiration in the interior, not sure about the seating arrangement, hopefully they make a propper 5 seat version, 6 seats is a bit meh.

^ The BX7 may debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, followed by the BX5 in 2017 and the BX3 in 2018. :)

The Big plans of Borgward

The resurrected Borgward brand is showing some healthy ambitions. The production version of the Borgward BX7 SUV will debut on the Beijing Auto Show in April and go on sale in China soon after that. The BX7 will be powered by a 2.0 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with an output of 201hp.

Next up are the BX5 compact SUV and the BX3 sub-compact SUV. The BX5 will be launched in 2017 and the BX3 in 2018. There are no plans at the moment for any other body styles, which seems to be a sound decision as the Chinese market continuously keeps begging for more SUV’s and CUV’s of all kinds, while traditional sedans and hatchbacks are loosing market share fast.

Borgward will offer a ‘new-energy’ variant of each of its cars. The BX7 will be offered as a hybrid with a very hot powertrain, based around a V6 turbo with a combined output of 401hp. The BX5 will be offered as a hybrid too and the BX3 will likely get a full-electric variant.

Borgward to reveal second model on February 29

Revived automaker Borgward has announced its intentions to reveal a new model on February 29 prior to the car’s public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Without even offering some sort of teaser, Borgward promises “more than just a world premiere” for this year’s Geneva. Additional details will be published in the following days when hopefully the resurrected car company will at least reveal the type of body style. We remind you its first model after a hiatus of more than half a decade is the BX7 crossover originally unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year.

While Borgward has its origins in Germany, nowadays the company is owned by Foton Motor from China where all of the models are going to be produced. The plan is to sell the cars initially in China and if the business will prove to be profitable then the company will expand availability to select markets in Europe.

Borgward uses the term “accessible premium” to indicate the cars are set to offer upscale features at a lower price tag compared to segment rivals. Taking into account the BX7 takes the shape of a crossover, perhaps the second model will be a sedan to offer more variety for those willing to take the plunge and acquire a car from a virtually unknown automaker.
