CLS-Class (C219) CLS 55 vs. M5 (Australian Motor Magazine Comparison Test)

The C219 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class is the first generation of the CLS-Class range of four-door coupé which features a fastback body style. It is succeeded by the CLS-Class (C218). Production: December 2003 – August 2010
I can't see the article.

Matt, Motor Magazine in the past used to have wet dreams over anything BMW touched by the M house.

What seems to be their complaints about the M5? What was the outcome of the comparison here? :t-hands:

Well, they dont think the M5 is an easy car to drive at slower speeds with SMG III. They think its the best track car and is the fastest but for day to day driving they would rather drive the CLS 55 AMG. They also think the HSV was out classed by the two germans.

So ultimately I think the favorite was the CLS in terms of looks and torque. They dont seem to like how the M5 revs so high. They also call it an ugly car. So thats the verdict. The CLS 55.

Ahh ok thanks. I've never driven an SMG car, so I know crap all about the transmissions lol.

It's funny how they always compare the HSV's to these fine Germans. A couple of years back a few of the magazines actually went on about how the HSV's were sooo close to the germans, but 1/2 the price. :t-crazy2:

CLS55 has a sick interior, the new 63 will be interesting when up pitted against the M5, can't wait to see what happens then.

I think the M5 might be out classed with new 63 engines...... But I still dont think they will be able to compete in the handling department. when the E55 AMG came out it was much quicker but wasn't as good as a racer as the E39 M5 because of handling. I think.....

While AMG is going all out in the engine deparment, I really hope they pay more attention to dynamics, if only for the sake of winning more comparison tests. :D

Well the CLS was that much better than the E class so I'm sure the next E63 will have stiffened suspension more handling oriented.

They most definately should, they have been lacking greatly in this department as of late. It seems though, w/ the SLK55 AMG that they're starting to get it, or so I've heard...

I can't speak for the W211 E55 vs. the E39 M5, but I do know that w/ the core cars, the E-class was always picked as the overall winner.

never in handling though. It was always the BMW with the best driving dynamics.

Have you driven an MB Matt? Handling in an MB is typically pretty good, and offers decent feel, though not like a BM, but close. For many close enough.

yes I have driven an MB and I agree that they do have good handling but usually not as good as BMW (according to the great majority of articles I've read). Even in this article they talk about Mercedes steering "You'll notice something about the steering in this car, its not crap!" Obviously he was making a referance to previous mercedes. Yes it is getting better but I think BMW takes the cake, its what they pride themselves on. Don't you agree?

Absolutely, that's why I like BM more. The steering gives you a feeling of greater security, it's an inexplicable feeling almost... I remember, quite a few occasions(get really excited thinking about it) where I took an E90 330i into an extremely hard corner and it just tucked, and you could feel the whole coner in your hands, almost as if your pushing the concrete out of the way. It all happend w/ such great ease.... This is a feeling I have NEVER gotten from an MB.

Ive had the same feeling in 3er when Ive taken it around corners. Its such controlled cornering. Its awsome.

I drove a 325 one time, and I busted a *itch on a green arrow and the back end slid just a bit, however small it was, it was awesome!

i would take a m5 not only for the looks but it has greater handling from what ive heard and it is faster so i dont know why anyone would choose a cls over it :t-hands:

With every minute that passes by now I'm feeling more Benzish, lol...read my sig, I'm really done w/ this one or the other buisness!

I liked the sig about being the high class of cars....I thought it was funny
