Chris Harris pits the Porsche GT3 RS 4.0 against the BMW M3 GTS and the Mercedes C63 AMG BS

i was just wondering, why nobody reviewed that uber e90 m3 with gts engine and carbon fibre stuff? or i just missed it?

I see Chris Harris referring to the AMG's transmission as M-DCT, but in reality the M3's transmission is called M-DCT.

Good review nonetheless.

... And where does that quote come from and who wrote it? :)

Sorry guys, I am the one to blame. I saw the video before I published the article, in order to write that small text. I messed up my notes a bit, and thus that awful mistake. I know, after all these years of activity here, such mistakes are humiliating. I am terribly sorry!

Eeehh..I had no intentions of putting any guilt trips, Giannis. I just wanted to point out an ity bity "anomaly".

MCT for Benz and M-DCT for BMW. Cheers! (y)

It (E90 M3 CRT) was reviewed by several publications. In many cases, the M3 CRT faired much better than the M3 GTS.

They did not pick the CRT, I assume because it is a sedan. However, I would take the CRT over the GTS any day.

C'mon man! Small typo. The reason I kept such an eagle eye is that Harris is notorious for mechanical faux pas. He referred to the S4's V6 as turbocharged and the N63 in the 550i as being naturally aspirated by way of a few examples.

It's odd but for me given the criteria of needs to be driven on the road and yet prove to be fairly useful on the track too I would chose the Merc, it's the most normally trimmed inside and thus will be the most desireable to drive long journeys yet it get remarkably close to arguably the finest trackday car there is in the GT3RS4.0 and is barely a nose behind the M3GTS which like the Porsche is another striped out racer.

After watching this review it hasn't changed my opinion that BMW were having a laugh at the expense of its fans asking nearly double the price of a standard M3 but knowing this fact doesn't make the other two seem like a bargain either. I reckon if you desire a Swiss army knife of a car then you need to be willing to pay through the nose for it which is something I can't bring myself to do.

^Well in that case you must have laughed your socks off at Chis too cause he too felt it was grossly over priced but in my opinion they all are.

Did BMW or Porsche have any problem moving those GTSs and 4.0s? I'm betting they had no problem. Price justified, regardless of what Harris thinks (and he even uses the market reason to justify the price of the Sport Classic). Whether the GTS costs twice that of a standard M3 is as immaterial as the fact that the 4.0 cost nearly 18% more than a standard GT3 RS, yet doesn't offer that much more over that car. These are run-out specials, their respective makers offer them at a price, the customers (who have every right to refuse and probably come from a different value perspective than your typical motoring journalist) agree, thereby justifying the price. End of.

As for which car I'd pick, somehow I find the Black Series the most appealing. You won't turn the same lap times as the Porsche, but it can be argued you'd have just as much fun and you'd certainly stand out in a field of GT3s and RSs. I'd take mine with the full aero pack and back seats if possible. The closest to having your cake and eating it too.

I merged both threads (Soup's & Giannis') into one.

Btw. here are the weight-figures measured by Sport Auto (with full tank of fuel):
1388 kg - GT3 RS 4.0
1417 kg - GT3 RS 3.8
1426 kg - GT3
:)

I believe in the US, there is not much difference between the weight of the RS 3.8 and RS 4.0 either cause the cars sold here don't get the polycarbonate rear side windows or the rear window.

In defense of the GTS it does gain a bigger, utterly unique engine in the process. Looks like a damn hoot to drive really. The only thing wrong with it in my book is that dreadful colour.

For fun factor it looks to me that both the Merc and BMW have the Porsche licked, can't beat front engined RWD for this in my opinion. But personally I feel the Merc offers everything the GTS does but turns the knob up to 11, plus it looks the dog's bollocks. Mean as f***.

Certainly the BS shades the GTS in the looks department. The problem with the BS is that on a circuit (a key environment for which I'd be wanting such a car for...) it's clear that it "gets big" to paraphrase Harris. The GTS appears to be the more nimble and adjustable of the two.

Truthfully, I wouldn't say no to any of these cars and would happily draw straws. And, I'd hope to pull the longest straw if that meant getting the GT3 RS 4.0. It's the ultimate of its kind for me; it represents the pinnacle and end of an era that encompasses all the things I love about motoring: the experience, the interaction, the personal challenge. Just look at Harris' downshifts - tell me it's not rewarding to be able to drive like that!

^Can't agree more with your opinion here and if my intent was to track very regularly then maybe the BS wouldn't be my first choice but based on my personal situation I think out of these three it's the Black that would get the nod.

I've seen and touched the only M3 GTS available in Sweden and in terms of looks I'm not impressed. The car didnt 'wow' me like M3 CSL did.
The car I take home , of course, it's Porsches finest.

Brilliant review by Harris and some great shots. However he needs to sort out his equipment and I'm not talking video but microphones. Not once did I get a sense of how loud or awesome the engines sound. For ever shoot he seemed to be using microphones that were meant to held close to mouth. Hardly any microphones were use outside the cars.

Had the sound be on par with the footage, the video would have been worthy of another watch.

^If that had been the case then it would have been the mighty BS all the way, that thing sounds like Thor clearing his throat. lol

Probably. Everytime a SLS AMG pass me with the gas pedal floored, I get flashbacks of the London riots. I can only imagine the destructive sound waves the BS sends through the air.
