A much more rounded comparison than Sutcliffe's.

Hands up, this video is a gratuitous piece of number searching.
The GT-R and M5 are not natural rivals, but as is so often the case when you spend time in cars that should share little common ground, they ended up being interesting foils for each other's talents and weaknesses.

You do not fully appreciate how big and heavy the F10 M feels until you've jumped into one immediately after driving an R35. The Nissan has always felt vast on UK roads to me, but the M5 seems bigger. As ever, the GT-R proves to be one big magic trick on four-wheels. It just shouldn't change direction the way it does given that it weighs nearly 1,800kg.
And the pace it extracts from a damp, nasty surface never, ever feels natural. You can see it in the video, forcing its way into the asphalt. Mizuno-san, father of the GT-R often gives a baffling explanation of why he wants the car to be quite heavy, because that's what gives it such staggering traction. Listening to this monologue in a press conference you'd write him off as a nut-job. On a B-road in January, he's transformed into an alchemist.

But, against the F10 M the GT-R is horribly unrefined and its cabin invites the type of unkind Datsun gags that I've traded in for years. Its ride is very, very busy too. And it likes a drink.
If the M5 feels nothing like as sharp, you quickly alter your point of reference and realise that it is possibly the most complete fast car on sale. Its operating window is unprecedented -at any one time, but not simultaneously, you can choose: 190mph, crazy power slides, 25mpg, snap-crack gearshifts, near-silence and, of course, fake engine noise.

The fake intake sound has been discussed enough: I don't like it, nor what it stands for, but if it stops you buying this magnificent car, you are denying yourself the chance to enjoy a great M car.

PistonHeads Headlines - Chris Harris video: BMW M5 vs Nissan GT-R

Now that was a superior comparison review than Steve's, Chris acknowledge the two cars weren't really rivals apart for the spec on a piece of paper but they are equally compelling. BTW when collecting the 328 I saw two M5s, a White one waiting to go out to a customer, simply stunning looking and a Black demo.

Good conclusion by Chris
"Are they rivals, not really. Is the GT-R faster? Yes. Would you rather live with the M5 every day? Yes."

I cant believe Merc is getting the great M5. Am I still sleeping and dreaming :D

Yes I am. Unless the M6...........hmmmmmmmm.

I have always loved & respected the Godzilla. Imo, R35 is the most impressive of all. However, if given a choice here, I'd take the M5. :t-cheers:

A sane person with any respect for their spine, internal organs and the welfare of their family and passengers would chose the M5. Only a complete and utter S&M freak would chose the GTR.

Only kidding but I too would chose the M5. :usa7uh:

The GTR is a great performance machine, but unless you're pushing it to its limits, it feels just slightly better than your average "cheap Nissan" to sit in. Surprisingly, it even feels a bit sluggish around town, it's a true beast that needs to be opened up and pushed hard for you to experience its brilliance.

Looks wise, it's fun, but something I tire of quickly, with its extremely overstated nature, but it gets MAJOR attention and stares, far more than an understated 5-Series (this is the point of the M5, of course).

I'd take or buy an M5, hands down.

Very difficult choice..... The GTR is such a monster I really have to think twice about this one.....I'm not old yet...GTR is ok.....

You're not serious, are you? :eusa_liar:D

GTR is ok.....M5 is just 100% Better.....

If I were young I suppose I too might pick the GTR cause being the quickest is important at that age but as you get older you realise comfort and luxury matter more.

I am only 36, so I consider myself to be young:D

True, I do appreciate comfort when just cruizin, but as a guy who loves driving I need that sporty nature of a secure turn-in coupled with a controlled exit with power behind the whole manoeuvre. Hence my BMW fanaticism

Klier, into a Datsun? Nah, that Duthcman may like the car in the same way I do (Sporty, excellent dynamics and massive power) but not over an M5

Klier mate, you gotta back me up here!:D

Listen I feel like I'm in my mid twenties but the reality is I'm nearly double that. Speed is all well and good as long as comfort isn't compromised too much, that's why I like my S Audis.

And as for Klier, well he's a Dutchman so who knows what he's might be smoking. ;)
