Vs Carbuyer - Audi Q7 vs Volvo XC90 vs Land Rover Discovery

What I've been saying all along the Volvo's 4 cylinder only engine decision isn't really working out all that well in everyday usage, this review concurs with my test drive experience, you need to push it hard to get it moving which hurts fuel economy. Audi with the bigger lazier engine doesn't need to be thrashed.

I loathe crossovers because they tend to be underpowered and overpriced. A weak engine in such a big car, not only makes the car joyless to drive, but makes it dangerous for overtaking or evading danger.

Volvo can be partially forgiven for offering such an entry level engine because of the thousands of customers desperate for a big SUV but will never go off-road, fill the car with 5-7 passengers or take it long motorway journeys where the shortcomings of the engine will be exposed.

Just you wait a couple of years. Not a single* s-class or 7-series car sold whiteout the base diesel engine.

Who in their right mind would buy a car like this with a V8?

*) Every dealer car and trade-ins within a year is diesel and base model.

The Q7 is killing it. Nearly every review sings its praises. Audi's refined it to the level that few cars come close.

Is it fantastic to drive?

It's fantastic, it really doesn't feel like you're driving an SUV, it's like a big station wagon, not a lot different to driving an A6. If you want an SUV which feels like a car and not an SUV this is the one for you. That said I prefer the exterior styling of the Volvo, so if you could put the Q7 interior and drive train in an XC90 I'd have my perfect vehicle.

Next year BMW 725d

The Q7 has no rivals in it's class today. What a car! When I was driving it I kept thinking "that's what Mercedes had to do!". Very comfortable and nice overall.

But its ugly from outside. Nevertheless, it does not bother me much. The interior is No1 priority for me.

Volvo is nice and I like it's design, but 2 litre engines, rather stiff suspension (my friends car has an air one) and the lack of some little cool features like soft close doors - makes this car not so great. But in terms of look, Volvo is almost on par with Range Rovers for me)
