Car & Driver Luxury SUV Comparison.

Re: ML350 Place 4/8 in SUV Shootout!!!

Shouldn't this be in the Internal Combustion or Reviews section rather than ML? (since it includes a whole lot of other cars but also includes the X5 and Touareg)

Sorry 2 disapoint, 4got 2 ask 4 ure recommendation b4 posting;) ...

Re: ML350 Place 4/8 in SUV Shootout!!!

Also the name of the thread is all wrong. It shouldn't be about ML but "SUV Shootout" or something like that.

This comparison is a Joke. A rebadged Honda CRV wins BMW and Mercedes. Ha ha ha...

My apologies..:usa7uh: , thought i would post this thread 2 talk more about the ML Review of the shootout!!!

Cheers

The MDX is actually a rebadged Honda Pilot, not the CRV. The CRV is the smaller SUV. Actually the MDX was sold before the Honda Pilot.

All that said I agree with your feelings.

Sorry we don't have Acura here in Europe and neither do we have Infiniti , so i don't know the models very well.:D

On the other hand we have Lexus but you will only see Toyota dealers drive one.

It's a disappointing result for the Treg, more so because of their terrible comments of the car. That said, its a porker of a car and deserves at least a V8 or a diesel in this comparison.

I certainly can live with the Caddy, does anyone else here thinks it looks hot?

Anyway, their comments/reviews on each car are very brief and sketchy, I wouldn't want to rely on them to select what cars I should buy.

The results don't surprise me at all. Car and Driver is extremely sports biased, so it is only natural that the top three SUV's picked are SPORTY, but perform not so well offroad. The Mercedes ML and Lexus LX are definitely better offroad, but less sporty than the top three.

It's C&D. Relax. :usa7uh: :t-cheers:

but looking on the pics they seem to drive more offroad than onroad?

"And even with what felt like the firmest suspension — which effectively quelled body motions — the X5 nonetheless tied with the Acura and Benz for the silkiness of its ride"

I doubt C&D took the cars to the extreme offroad - they can't do that or the dealerships who loaned them the cars will get pissed.

I'm pretty sure that the dealerships don't provided these cars. They come from BMWNA, MBUSA, etc. This test was probably mostly limited to snow for offroading tests but C&D has done more extreme off road tests before. I've been subscribing to C&D for almost 15 years and read numerous tests involving Hummers, Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees, and others done in places like Death Valley California which is a severe test for any off roader.

A test of the cars in this article isn't going to go to extreme off roading because 95% of people who buy these car won't put their cars in anything extreme. They pay too much money to have them take the abuse you would find in a place like Death Valley California. Snow and gravel roads is the worse most of these SUVs will ever see.
