Vs Car and Driver - Corvette ZR1 vs 997.2 Turbo PDK

I get why the turbo is faster to 60, but I would have expected the ZR1 to win the acceleration tests at least at higher speeds. Even at 1/4 mile the gap is pretty much same, it is only at 150 it seems to be closing up. The new turbo is a monster in a straight line.

^^and still Vette has better track time than Porsche(on Laguna Seca track,atleast)..Man,you cant argue with that..Vette is one mean machine indeed!!!

2,9 s to 60mph, that lines up with Sport Auto's 3,1 s 0-100 km/h time (62mph). Nice.

Of course it is. I didn't mean to belittle the ZR1. I am just surprised it didn't beat the Porsche at higher speeds despite much better power to weight ratio.

Really fast.

How much are the ZR1 and Turbo respectively?

Of the top of my head, around $100k for ZR1 and around $130k for Turbo.

German cars just seem to do more with less.....IMO. I was riding next to a ZR-1 the other day, the heating coming from it at the stoplight was ridiculous. Almost as if it was running hot or something, but it wasn't. The sound when he took off was that of a some type of aircraft. I still can't get over the heat coming from the car.

Thanks.

Here they are €130k for the ZR1 and €140k for the Turbo. Seems fair.

In my book, that must mean that they have designed it well. Heat should leave the car, had it sayed, the car would fry. But then I'm a lawyer, not an engineer.

ZR1 vs. 997.2 Turbo

0-60mph: 3.4 / 2.9
Rolling 5-60: 4.0 / 3.4
0-100mph: 7.6 / 6.8
0-150mph: 16.4 / 16.2
1/4 Mile: 11.5 @ 128mph vs. 11.0 @ 128mph
Top Speed: 205 / 194
Laguna Seca Lap Time: 1:36.8 / 1:37.8

ZR1:

Highs: Stunning engine and exhaust audio, a hero at the track, amazing brakes, civilized everyday persona
Lows: You paid $120K for that interior?, needs a steady hand on bumpy roads

997.2 Turbo:

Highs: Off the line performance, steering, brakes, practical, easy to drive fast
Lows: Disappointing engine note, price

Porsche pickup 2 extra points for rear seats and 3 more extra for cargo space.

Final Results: The Turbo won 197 to 191. If price as a factor is eliminated, the Turbo wins 183 to 171.

Zr-1 base--$109,130
as tested--$121.425

Porsche base--$133.750
as tested-----$158,085

I'm trying to see if there are pigs flying outside my window. A german car winning in acceleration, but losing out on track time to an american car? Ha ha ha. :D

I think it is worth noting that the Corvette Z06 has been faster than the 997 Turbo around most tracks for a few years now, but today, Corvette can't do it for half the money anymore.

Fantastic result by the Vette. Beating the Turbo while being slower in acceleration...

I always thought the 997 gen of the Turbo was not exactly a great one. It has consistently lost to many other cars in terms of track test and the exhaust note is quite disappointing...

I'm sure the Turbo is way more powerful than the factory HP number to hide the chassis and AWD-system shortcomings compared to the GTR or ZR-1. Which is the contrary of what Porsche usually stood for.

This gen of Turbo has muted to a straight-line hero...While the 'Vette shames it on the track... Go figure!

interesting, I always thought you'd achieve better numbers with a rolling start vs. from a dead stop. From the tests I've seen Edmunds do, their rolling starts tend to be quicker to 60 than their 0-6 tests.

I think that really depends on how you do the 0-60. If you are going to do it from idle, it will be slower than the rolling start. But if you do 0-60 by first revving the engine to rpm where it makes most torque (and tires can grip) and launch you will probably get a better time than the rolling start.

Keep in mind that Car and Driver (as RaT and MT) measures with 1-foot rollout. You have to add another 0,3s to have a time comparable with european mags.

If we translate CaD results into european :

0-100km/h - 3,4s
0-160km/h - 7,1s
0-200km/h - 10,7s (based on 1/4m 11,3s at 206km/h)

This test suggests, that with a perfect launch (3,1-3,2s) 0-200km/h time of 10,4-10,5s is possible. As in Autozeitung.

The ZR1 is at a severe disadvantage traction-wise with its massive torque (even above 60mph) and the use of a 6 speed manual compared to the 997TT's AWD and lightning shifts of the new PDK. At a certain point traction won't be an issue and the time lost to shifting are compensated by the overwhelming hp advantage. You can see this in their respective times to cover certain intervals up to 150mph:

60-100mph: ZR1 4.2s ; 997TT 3.9s (ZR1 fighting traction and slower shifts)
100-128mph: ZR1 3.9 ; 997TT 4.2s (Power of ZR1 too much for 997TT)
128-150mph: ZR1 4.9s ; 997TT 5.2s (ZR1 putting more distance on 997TT)

60 to 150 mph

ZR1 13
Turbo 13.3

the zr1 is faster but rollingstarts are more common from 30mph or 50mph so exepect the turbo pdk to be faster if both wont go beyond 150 mph..anyway its pointless because both cars have to be idle to do roll out starts..
