I am sure you have all seen the discussions on the new Canon 50D due for release in October. Much discussion about the new sensor and high ISO performance. There have been some high ISO images posted by someone who was at a Photoshop Event and Canon had several 50D's for use. Here is one he posted shot at ISO 12,800, yes that is 12,800! This is from a jpg original and shot at f/4.0 @ 13mm, 1/400, no flash, ISO 12,800. I used Neat Image and resized with a sharpness tweak. Still some noise but this is at 12,800! Amazing stuff being done these days!

If I get the job I'm applying for, I'll probably buy one :usa7uh:

Although I think this was released due to large pressure from Nikon's rapidly improving camera houses.

I agree the competition is certainly a reason for the release. I have a pre-order in for it and even though the 40D has been great, I would like to see the latest model (sounds familiar doesn't it.)

Good luck on the new job application!

Sounds very familiar :P
Why not save the money for a Canon 7D? Or whatever it will be called, it will be awsome!

I don't want to go FF ... don't need it and many of my lenses are EF-S which will not work on FF. I think in about another year or a little more maybe, Canon will do a major reword of the xxD line. The new xD will be a mindblower I think...but FF is just over the top for me.

I agree, hugely exciting stuff happening recently!!

And here I am, stuck back in 8 megapixel land with the humble 20d... *bows head*

That 'humble" 20D with the same lenses will do just as good a job as the latest goodies... it's nut's like me that need to have the latest and the greatest... But it is fun!

hehe, this is true. though i do feel like it's getting a bit long in the tooth, and the lack of auto sensor clean is incredibly annoying, and 8mp is SOoo 2005...

but i am very lucky to have it all the same.

would love to hear updates! i very much covet that 17-55 lens of yours...

The sensor cleaner you mention has really worked. I have only had one spot so far and I took care of that with a small blower on the sensor.

The 17-55 is a fine piece of glass. I was upset with the price without it being a "L" lens but after using it I think Canon just forgot to paint the red line on it. A really sharp and excellent lens.

I will post some info on the 50D when it arrives.

This is a sample image from Canon just recently posted on DPreview... not their sample but from a poster who found the Canon site. Pre-production 50D, out of camera with the new NR feature on Standard...no PP. I downloaded the full file and resized it to 1200 with no further processing. 1/50th, f/8 @ 28mm... ISO at 12,800. Amazing!

Incredible. My images are granier at 3200 ISO....

Yes, I think if there's one feature on my body I sorely miss it is that... sensors are a pill to clean!

Yeah - well many suggest it is not an L lens simply because it is only compatible with the crop sensor bodies, and it does make sense... it would be odd to have an L lens which does not fit on the bodies most likely to accompany them... a little disappointing though, yes :)

Also did you hear about this?

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens Review

Canon's obvious answer to Nikon's much lauded equivalent... obviously a lot of compromises in image quality, but how relaxing would it be to only have to deal with one lens!

I have read about the new 18-200mm but really have no interest in that long a reach. The lenses I have now all have great IQ and I don't really get into quick change needs. I take the three of them in the car when I go out to shoot and just do the switch. Otherwise I have the 17-55mm on most of the time.

I cannot get over the IQ of the new 70-200mm IS... what a piece of glass that is.

Fancy a much loving home to relocate the 40d to? :D
Yeah... I had it sold before I ordered the 50D. Sold it with my 70-300 IS and replaced that with the EF 70-200mm F4L IS... a much better quality lens.

Oh, a while ago! What have you been using with the 70-200mm then?
I must say the 50d would be quite exciting for yourself... :)

Fantastic image quality hey.

Took this with the 70-200mm f/4 L a couple Saturdays back. f/4, 1/100 @ 200mm.

He has a nicer expression here, but it's not quite as sharp unfortunately...

I am constantly impressed by that lens, it's such a joy to use...

I like the first one... nice colors!

Yeah... most would say that lens is about the best zoom on the market now days. It is hard to find birds here, they flit around but not in large numbers and they are run of the mill birds. I want to go to the marina at Lake Mead and try and get some ducks in action.

Here is one at ISO 1600 with NO NR and shot at f/2.8 at 1/30th with the 17-55 IS.
