X3/X4 BMW X4 is coming...

The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 3 Series platform. Now in its fourth generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles. The BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured by BMW since 2014. The X4 is widely considered as a "coupé" version of the X3, trading its practicality with a sloping rear roof which offers a sportier styling. BMW has indicated 2025 will be the X4's final model year.
The new modular RWD platform will also bring better possibilities to spin-off high-end models quicker & with lest costs than today. But it all depends on market situations. Right now downsizing is necessary - to gain volumes, boost revenues & get money for R&D.

Not to mention that in the last half decade BMW redirect most resources into BMW i ... Canceling / freezing projects like 8er GC (Concept CS), Z8, M7, X7 etc - also due to unstable situation in global automotive market.

With BMW i being launched, modular platforms being introduced etc the R&D costs will be lower, resources more available ... and then (if market conditions will be OK), we can expect high-end models too.

Regarding the rising interest in SUVs / SACs, my bet is on X7 / X8 rather on 8er, Z8 etc.

Regarding a supercar ... There is a possibility of a launch of a limited edition of M8 (?) - supercar based on i8 - in 2016. On BMW's 100th birthday.

Where the front of the X4 agrees with the theme of the X6, below the headlights, it looks marvelous. But the hood integration with the kidneys and the top of the lights, which are altogether too square, where it agrees with the X3, it looks hideous.

Ugly nose/headlight/hood integration, and silly crease on front fenders, those are my main drawbacks.

Call me just plain illiterate, dumb, stupid or whatever, but I don't understand.

There is considerable risk in BMW’s approach of channeling lots of R&D money to Brand i.
BMW is spending what? About $3 billion USD? developing the i3 and i8 hybrid/electric supercar. Sales of electric cars last year, @ +/- 43,000 odd vehicles. So correct me if I am wrong the i3 and i8 will BMW’s lowest-selling products. And no one on this planet can deny that Electric vehicles disadvantages versus petrol/diesel fueled cars include costly battery packs, limited ranges and the time needed to recharge. So how on earth does this add up in any language or any boardroom?

And you put Volumes and R&D in the same write-up?

It's not just about particular model ... It's about CFRP, it's about new modular engines, it's about other EfficientDynamics & ConnectedDrive solutions, it's about energy management, it's about aerodynamic solutions etc.

The resources were channeled into Project i - and BMW i models are just one part of this project.

So, it's about tech & solutions that will eventually trickle down to other (core) BMW, MINI & RR cars.

Every single model in BMW Group will benefit from Project i. No doubt about that. Therefore making Project i a priority has been so important & essential for BMW.

The other priority are modular solutions.

And when those priorities completed, all the spin-offs will be easier, cheaper & quicker to make.

Talking about volumes ... I was talking about downsizing mostly & also tons of niche spin-off models on existing platforms ... It's all about costs & profit margins.

Btw, don't underestimate EVs & hybrids ... When boom happens (and it initially will in congested metro areas), nobody would like to be left behind. And the ready ones will capitalize a lot!

Hmm.. I like it, just not crazy about the front lights, bit dull compared to the rest of the car. Well, I'd never be in the market for a SUV/SAV/SAC et.c. so don't really care. It'll sell like cupcakes anyway. And the front probably works better in flesh, probably a lot more aggressive live. Another solid car to the Bimmer lineup.

I expect futher freeze for the 8er/Z8 too.

Sad.

Why can't BMW make an attractive front end anymore? If they're not Odd, then they're just too soft.

I'm underwhelmed. I was expecting something much sleeker. It's not ugly by any means, but it's just plain and a little dumpy.

Regarding the new headlight & tail light LED graphics ... I was told they would be introduced on one of the higher-end upcoming BMW vehicles first. They are just previewing them on the Concepts, and monitoring the reaction.
The L shaped/angular tail light designs are starting to get old. About time BMW gets a new design.

Uglier by the day? We will see with different colours and wheels, but it just doesn't seem to be working.
