Deal could help lower production costs
BMW and Toyota have already announced plans to share diesel engines and co-develop lithium-ion batteries, but new details are starting to emerge about their ever expanding partnership.
According to reports out of Germany and Japan, Toyota will supply BMW with hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technology. Additional information is limited, but sources suggest the deal could help lower the production costs of the fuel saving systems.
An official announcement could be made later this week.

Toyota will supply BMW with hybrid technology, reports say
TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. plans to supply BMW AG with hybrid drivetrain systems and hydrogen fuel cell technology, as the two partners deepen a green car development tie up they forged last December, media reports say.
Under the plan, Toyota would achieve greater economies of scale for its gasoline-electric hybrid systems and win a trophy customer in the form of a German luxury carmaker.
Specifics of the agreement were reported Monday by Japan's Nikkei business daily and over the weekend by Germany's Der Spiegel magazine.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda and BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer will make an announcement this week, the Nikkei reported without saying how it learned the news.
Toyota spokesman Joichi Tachikawa said the company could not comment on cooperation beyond what was announced in December and March.
In December, the companies said BMW would supply Toyota with small-displacement clean-diesel engines to use in vehicles sold in Europe starting in 2014. In return, Toyota would work with BMW to produce next-generation lithium ion batteries for hybrid vehicles.
They signed the joint battery-research agreement in March. At the time, both companies left open the door for further collaboration.
"We've announced that we will have r&d cooperation with BMW on environmental technologies," Tachikawa said. "There are many possibilities with many technologies."
Toyota is looking for ways to achieve higher volumes to bring down production costs of its hybrid system, made famous by its deployment in the Toyota Prius, the world's best selling gasoline-electric car. It has already signed similar hybrid development or supply deals with Mazda Motor Corp., Subaru and Ford Motor Co.
Fuel-cell technology
Under the upcoming deal, Toyota will also supply BMW with hydrogen fuel cell technologies, the Nikkei said. That would be the first time Toyota has supplied its fuel cell technology to a rival automaker, the newspaper added.
Toyota plans to start selling a new fuel cell vehicle in 2015.

It will never happen. Japanese corporate culture is completele incompatible with Western one.

BMW and Toyota, the two best car companies in the world together.
Exiting for sure!

BTW, Eni, I read BMW is now reconsidering the PSA partnership, because PSA made a deal with GM (GM seems to own 7% of PSA now)? Because of that new partnership, according to contract, BMW is free to reconsider it's position.
I say, bye bye PSA, you're not needed anymore, and BMW can learn nothing from you.

That is cool. It could lower costs and we could get more exciting sportscar. Why not a together developped Toyota Supra Hybrid and BMW M One Hybrid with both BMW's and Toyota's know-how ? Of course visually much more different than GT86 and BRZ twins.

^Nice idea and as VAG have shown platform sharing isn't something that means everything need drive or look the same, I sure a BMW will drive like a BMW and the Toyota will drive like a Toyota.

This ought not to come as a surprise as BMW has collaborated with other companies in the past to work on hybrid technology.

Toyota's Toyoda Chief Akyo is currently in Munich as a guest and is in talks with BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer. At a press conference tomorrow further details will be announced, but the business newspaper has already learned that it's about a strengthening of cooperation in the fields of lightweight construction and hybrid.

Specifically, Toyota is interested in the BMW technology for industrial mass production of carbon components, which can be described as the basis for cost-effective production of electric models BMW BMW i3 and i8. In return, BMW would be interested in hybrid technology of the Japanese, who now makes even in small cars like the Yaris block at attractive prices and in combination with internal combustion engines from Munich for entry-level hybrid from BMW or MINI could be used.

This can really really mean we might see some worthy hybrid sportscars/supercars with FI (BMW) and NA (Toyota) engines and CF chassis, at a lower production cost. Supra V, LFA II, M One and M Two could be a true reality.

BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation agree to further strengthen collaboration
Press Release said:
29.06.2012

Tokyo/Munich. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), met today with Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at BMW Group headquarters in Munich to announce the planned expansion of their existing cooperation initiated in December last year. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at long-term strategic collaboration in four fields: joint development of a fuel cell system, joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle, collaboration on powertrain electrification and joint research and development on lightweight technologies.

Also today, Norbert Reithofer and Akio Toyoda of TMC both signed a Joint Statement to reconfirm their companies’ shared intention to strengthen the long-term, strategic collaboration between them.

Reithofer said: “We aim to further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies. We signed an MoU to this effect today. Toyota and the BMW Group share the same strategic vision of sustainable individual future mobility. Together we have a great opportunity to continue leading our industry through this transformation.”

Toyoda added: “BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars. We respect each other. And I think this is shown by our taking the next step only six months since the signing of our initial agreement. Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells. On the other hand, I believe BMW’s strength is in developing sports cars. I am excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship.”

In March 2012, the BMW Group and TMC signed a binding agreement on collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cells. In addition, the BMW Group and Toyota Motor Europe entered into a contract under which the BMW Group will supply highly-efficient 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre diesel engines to Toyota Motor Europe, starting in 2014.

Today’s MoU represents the companies’ agreement in December last year to identify and discuss other possible collaborative projects.

Toyota MR2, Toyota Supra, Lexus SC, Lexus LFA II, BMW Z2, BMW Z8, BMW M One, BMW M Two ? Could the true McLaren F1 successor come from BMW/Toyota ?

This tie-up is getting serious, I wonder where it will lead to next?

We know BMW needs a sportscar brand to be competitive against Ferrari, Lamborghini which belongs to Audi, Porsche which belongs to VW and Mercedes which is not sluggish. And we know Toyota supplies I4 and V6 engines ? So have a connection to the brand. Purchase of Lotus ?

I can perfectly see where all this is going. BMW seems to want CF and hybrid to go upmarket. And Toyota does need diesel engines. Hence, an M1 supercar, with V8 power, CF and hybird tech seems to be the way to go.

"Just a bit over 15 months after announcing their joint venture (BMW Peugeot Citroën Electrification (BPCE)) on developing hybrid and electric vehicle technologies, BMW and Citroen are in talks to break up the partnership, reports Bloomberg News.

BMW spokeswoman Micaela Sandstede told Bloomberg News that BMW is looking to take over the operations of the BMW Peugeot Citroen Electrification partnership.

"Whether that means the joint venture’s employees move to BMW is undecided," she said. "We are still in discussions with PSA over the dismantling of the joint venture."

The joint venture BPCE currently includes an R&D center in Munich and a manufacturing facility in Mulhouse, France, which employs 250 workers who are supposed to electrify around 10,000 vehicles starting from 2015."
