BMW Sauber has appointed Jorg Zander to a newly created position of chief designer, the team announced on Tuesday.
Zander will take up his post Hinwil, Switzerland at the beginning of July and will report to technical director Willy Rampf.
BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen said: “The development of the BMW Sauber F1 team continues to move forward, and that includes adding a chief designer to our staff line-up.
“We are certain that in Jorg Zander we have found the right man for this pivotal position. His experience will be an important asset to us.”
Zander began his F1 career with Toyota in 1999 before spending three years as chief engineer for mechanics and transmission at BAR.
In late 2005 he was appointed head of design at Williams, but left the squad last month for what the Grove team said were personal reasons.
The 42-year-old German is looking forward to a fresh challenge at BMW Sauber.
“The BMW Sauber F1 team is in its set-up phase, which presents a major challenge,” he said.
“It isn’t just a matter of technology but of laying down the structures and processes as well.
“Drawing on my experience, I would like to do my bit to support the team on its way up.”
