BMW nomenclature is getting ridiculous. Can you be a better Marketer to name the cars?

My idea is for them to not focus on these goofy prissy "fancy" names and go back to focusing only on the ultimate model designation, and then put an engine and/or treatment code/symbol as a "side marker".

For example, even something as "short" as an X5 35dx, and let's not even get into the "Sdrive" crap and whatever that means, it all looks, and sounds stupid. Marketing 101: It has to be attractive to spell out, to see, and make sense. That DOES NOT!

Why not, X5 3.0?

Isn't that how they used to do it?

Back then, it just use to be 'X5', the 3.0/5.0 designation came a bit later.

Yes, sDrive badge is quite redundant. We know BMW is RWD (non-AWD) as standard. And AWD card get xDrive badge anyway to communicate AWD drive.

Unless ....

sDrive does (and will do it so even more in the future) communicate RWD - just like xDrive does with AWD. It will make sense when BMW FWD cars will be launched - either with no special "drive" badge, or with some that will communicate FWD. But then we can expect all the rest BMW models will get "sDrive" and potential "?Drive" badge.

(to Eni) ^ not even a sane person will understand it. It's madness.

BMW really has to stop all this. But they are not going to, so why bother?

IMO, it would benefit the visual and auditory name to just drop the "Drive' part then. X or S, at least to keep things simple and concise.

Oh jesus....are you f-ing serious? Do you really care about those things? Is it really THAT important - what stupid name is in your car's brochure?

Reminded me of this - Louis C.K. - I'm American! - YouTube

Ok, so using your logic, you wouldn't care if your car was named "DogShitOnWheels"? I mean, if names and branding doesn't matter, then someone's wasting trillions of dollars as it's a fairly drastic measure when it comes to businesses.

What if Apple named their iPad "Ipad3G-Drive 2.0Lion"? Do you think a smart businessman like Steve Jobs would have done something so foolish? Do you think the model "iPad" would be as iconicized now if people had to see and say that name to describe their model? Absolutely not.

Nomenclature is indeed very important. It's like dating someone with a crappy name.... Sure, it might not be a deal breaker, but you certainly care. ;)

Honestly, who cares what it's called on a piece of paper? As long as it says just Z4 on the boot instead of some one meter name/word, I'm happy. And what about Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale?

It says Z4 on the boot, and sDrive3.0i on the side quarter panel.

When I was younger I knew all BMW, Audi and Mercedes's models by heart. Now I cannot keep up. Soon German car manufacturers will run out of space on the boot where they put the model designations.

Yeah, it's annoying. When it comes to nomenclature, keep it simple and to the point. No need to over-inflate numerical designation because it ends up being this inconsequential pi**ing contest. I liked how the number indicates displacement. If it has turbo, throw in a 'T.' If it has a supercharger, a simple 's' or 'k' will suffice. Got AWD? The letter 'x' should be pretty indicative. If it's a coupe, it's got 2 doors, do you really need a badge for that? While I see how some folks think this stuff is pretty petty, blatant pandering marketing schlock is annoying and unnecessary from an enthusiast point of view.

But if I was a non-enthusiast, like the vast majority of the buying public, I may not know what a 't' stands for or I may not know it even exists. If it's spelled out for me, it does take away some ambiguity and I'm more aware of my options. And when I'm more aware, I may be more apt to pile on the variations and options, thus line the carmaker's pockets with more of my cash. In the end, that's the name of the game. And this current naming game is not going to change anytime soon. It will get more descriptive and convoluted whether we like it or not.

Louis CK is one of my heroes. Love that guy.

Yeah yeah, and you have to go to the BMW section and troll about it.
But I don't hear you about the ML 250 BlueTEC 4Matic for instance....why's that? Retard MB names are ok? MB doesn't have much retarded marketing names? What will it be?

Some more:

E 300 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY Avantgarde

E 350 CDI 4Matic BlueEFFICIENCY Elegance

S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY 4Matic Lang Prestige Plus

These are actual names here. I said wow.

Yeah, and the kids from today are taking your place in knowing everything ;)

We already covered this. Those sound stupid as well. I still think BMW's are the worst, I know to you that makes someone a troll, but in reality it's a cluster of numbers and letters, some capitalized, some not, which just looks and sounds very unattractive. I think all this Marketing schtick with naming sounds stupid.

It's starting to get a bit ridiculous...kinda nearing IUPAC organic chem nomenclature....any organic chemists here know what i mean? haha

No, coming from you makes it a troll comment. You should have posted this in The Pit, or maybe even in your 'own' side of the forum, the MB section.
Now it looks like you posted this to provoke and troll, which was your intention to begin with most probably.

And I don't care what you have, or haven't covered. Everything's covered already. Might as well stop with this forum then.

And one more thing, MB names are far more retarded than BMW names.

It's sad that in your little world, M-B is "my section" and BMW is "your" section. I am entitled to post whatever the F@ck I want here, as long as it's related to BMW, and will continue to do so if I feel appropriate. Do you own BMW Stock? Do you work for BMW? Do you make decisions for BMW? If not, then you're getting your blood boiling for nothing, and you have as much to do with BMW as I or anyone else does.

BMW's new naming system sucks, annoys me, are worst in industry to me, simple. That makes it BMW related. Either agree with it, or defend those dumb names. This game of "Your M-B VS My BMW" is pointless. The only thing "My" about M-B is the individual model that I currently drive.

Hahaha, just pointing things out. If you're free to post whatever you want, I'm free to call you troll when I think you're trolling. It's ok to be mad though.

Also, YOU are the one with MB vs. BMW nonsense all the freaking time. If you stop with that for once, maybe I'll lose the urge to defend BMW against blind fanboy nonsense all the time. Doubt any of those will happen, though.

And yes, "in my little world". Gotta admit....I love that little touch. Shows your anger well :)

LOL guys, I honestly missed this it was always (Klier vs Betty):D and saw this coming;)

I don't wanna interfere, just that it's too early in the year! :t-cheers:

Blah blah, remember who started the Thread, and remember who started throwing hissy fits at the Thread subject. ;)

Why don't you show everyone your good reading comprehension skills and point out how I'm an M-B Fanboy?

Is it my incredible criticism toward the C204, or the CLS's lines, or to the sketches of numerous M-B models, etc. etc.? I mean, that sure sounds like a Fanboy to me.

.... Ohh, yeah, it's because I make fun of many things BMW, and you have no argument against me accept to pull the blinders over your eyes and use a completely irrelevant term to any of the opinions I've expressed: "Fanboy".

The sooner you realize that BMW is just as much "mine" as it is "yours", only difference is that you waste tons of your energy defending this company that cares only about which one of us has more money than the other, the sooner you'll show some worth. ;)
