A CSL version of the outgoing bmw M6 was fully developed before being axed, the firm has revealed.

The M6 CSL coupe was rejected by the BMW board as it didn't make sense as a business case.

It is now part of BMW M's classic collection, shown in full to journalists today for the first time.

Features included active aerodynamics (focused on the floor ), a 100kg weight saving programme, an upgraded power output and a new aero package.

Another car revealed for the first time today is a rear-wheel drive M version of the first-gen X5. This car was never made as BMW decided its X-badged cars had to be all-wheel-drive, something that's no longer the case as its sells rear-drive versions of the X1.

It was powered by a V8 engine mated to an smg gearbox and was "well received" in customer clinics, BMW claims, but was ultimately rejected.

This has to be one of the most fascinating and coolest threads. It is like the secret cave of the M division. The relics from the past.

The thing about the M8 that's so wicked, besides the look and the powertrain, was how carbon-fiber-intensive the body was especially at that time. I really wished that BMW really pioneered the progression of CRFP into mainstream offerings. That would've been awesome.

Amazing. Love that M5 with that classic BMW color scheme (red, blue, purple). I haven't seen it in so long and it brings back memories.

The 8-Series is a pure classic. My Brother was driving one VERY similar to that one, same color, and it was a fully tuned, TT Dinan V12. He popped into my School one day, and it was like out of a Movie.... Everybody gathered around to see it, and I had no idea my Brother had it. Making my way through the crowd, I could see a head through the window that resembled my Brothers.... Then proceeded to walk over to the car while everybody in the School finally gave me the cool points a lil' Freshman like me deserved.

One Day we will open up the BMW group's entire archive. and what you see here is only scratching the surface.

There is some noticeably missing cars here which were removed because there is a bit of two-ing and throwing going on to decide whether to take them to ltd production.

Also the collection of M Concept Cars, Which are held in another location.

1997 - E39 M5 (Le Mans blue) Shown exclusively @ IAA 1997 BMW press conference which also brought the new MINI into the world.
1999 - E46 M3 Coupe (Chrome Shadow) - IAA 1999
2001 - E46 M3 CSL (Chrome Shadow) - IAA 2001
2004 - E60 M5 (Chrome Shadow) - Geneva 2004
2005 - E63 M6 CSL Concept (Chrome Shadow) - Originally intended for IAA 2005. (No interior)
2007 - E92 M3 Coupe (Chrome Shadow) - Geneva 2007

Nearly every BMW model that is developed is considered for M application.
With some models failing the first hurdles in in-depth discussion and debate to some, that reach final evaluation studies in which a car is actually built using an existing model with M body aerodynamics in prototype form just to evaluate that the car earns the visual status of an M.

Apparently the red M6 in the M5Board video at 1:19 is the M6 CSL prototype. The video is blurry but it doesn't look much different. Has anybody found pictures?

I think i am gonna start my own M forum and get invited to that place :D

One of my wishes in life is to see this place. I feel like it is one of the coolest things in the world. I had no idea that M actually kept a model of each car they have made. I really like that. It is as if they keep their on piece of art that they made a while ago. I think someone mentioned that there are way more cars that were not shown to the public. I wonder what cars those are :t-hands:

Are they cars that have no chance of making it to production but BMW felt it was too controversial?

Also, does M have the keys to these cars and do they take them out for a test drive ever now and then or are they just relics of the past being kept there? Does someone service them?

Hah, good luck scoping these guys out. :D

On a lil serious note. If the system was built by humans, it can be systematically pulled apart. Security systems aren't designed to keep people out, just delay them as LONG as possible.

As they say, it's not whether you can get in, but how much time you have. ;)

And no, I'm not gonna break in. Haha
