5 Series BMW i5 in the works

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.
Apart from the i8 do all their electrified cars have to be ugly!? I still don't know how they approved the design of the i3 had it looked lie a BMW it would have sinks better.

It's not terrible looking, as has been pointed out, patent drawings are rarely flattering - clearly though BMW are persisting in delivering challenging designs - and that's a gamble many would say isn't paying off for them these days.

Looks much better than the Model X, so that's a start at least.

Electric X3 or hybrid X3? Electric I suppose?

Pure BEV, not PHEV.

Regarding i5: mind those pics are patent drawings only. But you still get the general idea though. It's 5erGT-ish kind of a design.

I've seen more conventional forms of the rear (and don't like this messy one). However, the assymetry theme (compare left and right D-pillar) seems cool to me.

Assymetric design as previewed by Chris Bangle?

Bring it on!

The XCoupe is kind of cool. Years ago this concept was originally thought about as the X6 until marketing demands requested five doors. Briefly to be reconsidered for an X2 based upon the E84.

Like the 3GT, 5GT, and i3, this is a well thought out use of space that will offer a positive experience for the owner.

Like the 3GT, 5GT, and i3, this comes at the price of ungainly proportions.

.. I guess it depends how much the owner is prepared to forgive in what they want, to get what they need.

Also.. the "i5 patent car's" Uncle, the Z22...

I think the shape is dictated by aerodynamic efficiency, which is highly important when it comes to the range of electric cars. That I expected. What I hoped for, though, was a stronger bimmerification of the said shape.

Anyway, let's wait for proper photos before judging.

If this will be the result of one of the decisions taken during the offsite special board meeting for which they skipped their presence at the Paris motorshow, then a simple conference call where everybody would have said 'No' would have been sufficient and they could have taken a walk around the Eifeltower.

Sometimes I have no clue what these high level people have in mind. Probably they are wondering why sales of i3 are not what they have expected. It's called ugliness, despite what all their internal sales, marketing and design advisors say. It's not because the powertrain is an alternative one that you have give the car a hideous design. Just act normal is a good advice.

Sorry for these hard words, but when over here in Belgium for each single 7 series 20 Teslas are sold, even with rebates of 20k on the brand new bimmer model, then you know they are missing something over there in Munich and you don't need a 'panic' board meeting to come to conclusions. Oh yes, and why on a brand new platform you lose more than 100 liters od boot space on an 'iPreformance' model. I would have thought that at the moment of the decision to develop the new platform they could have foreseen that hybrid cars were the way forward and that the new platform would have allowed not to lose practical aspects of a car. Probably the 'strategists' where sleeping that day.

It was not a panic meeting as the media has made out to be. Look for non attendance bar Ian Robertson at the upcoming LA show also.
Remember US sales do not completely reflect global sales of the i3 especially with the arrival of the 94H which is in demand.

It fits in with the BMWi Philosophy of "Born Electric" a standard concept not just a volume model electrified.
So completely entirely new from the ground up and yes its CFRP like the i3 and i8.
Like the i8 and i3 its designed for Aerodynamic Efficiency and being developed with optional range extender.
