Report BMW Group at the 2016 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este

One wonders what the ultimate purpose of the Hommage concepts is...

The 3.0 CSL concept vexed me with the conflict between stunning lines and that daft grill which gave the frontal DRG a comical charicature.

This year's Hommage is terrific and embodies the spirit of BMW's success with small, sporty 3 box coupes and sedans. The wheel design is especially intriguing.

One wonders further that, instead of car makers continually plugging every possible niche with increasing amorphity, why not set out a division focusing on exclusive designs underpinned by regular platforms.

If BMW i can be a sub-brand for the future direction of the marque why not a BMW "classic" division for exclusive, posh boutique halo models sold for a decent profit. Kinda like an MSO or SVO division. Could be cool and profitable and brand-building all in one go.

This concept proves that BMW can still make good looking cars but the bean counters and shareholders are put first hence this won't be built , but at least tell me that those wheels will make it into production those look fantastic can't believe nobody mentioned them, stunning !

This car in this form will not make production. But something will come from its ideas.

BMW has always revealed its design intentions with such studies and concept cars. As Scott once pointed out, we will see some styling cues from the 328 Hommage and Vision Connected Drive concept cars making it onto production on the future Z5.

These type of cars have, at least at BMW, a well defined purpose: heralding the trays of the next design philosophy, step by step.

Bloody good looking, but as others have voiced, at some point you need to stop just paying homage to your past and create something this exciting for the future.

ps. If anyone else wondered like me why 'hommage' and not 'homage', it is the French spelling - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hommage

Absolutely brilliant!

I can't believe that this comes from the same factory that produces the 2er AT :D

I don't know why you say that... You see, back in the day the BMW Z11 (E1) (1991) concept was already very prized:

The trade magazine “Auto Bild” designated the 2+2-seater that generated zero emissions when driving as “the most advanced car of the century”. And the readers’ choice in car magazine “Auto Zeitung” voted the BMW E1 as the winner in the category “Environment and Technology”.

In fact, in a quarter of century the technology didn't evolved much, as far as top speed and autonomy range is concerned:

The electric motor of the BMW E1 packs 37 kW with power being transferred to the rear axle. The innovative extruded aluminium construction and plastic body produced an exceptionally lightweight city car with a top speed of 120 km/h and a range of 200 kilometres.

Even if the batteries technology was different:

In the BMW E1, sodium-sulphur batteries are mounted under the rear seat and adequately protected in the event of a crash. A conventional domestic power socket is all that’s necessary to recharge the power supply.

Finally, the innovative design of this concept really resembles the 2er Active Tourer :D:

The performance and practical qualities of the vehicle with its aerodynamically pioneering design were immediately given a seal of approval by the test drivers at the time.

Cernobbio / Como having total traffic stroke.:eek:
Not even BMW Shuttle service can't help at all. At least you can enjoy Schubert & having small talk with a driver while creeping through Cernobbio in a 7er.
Nice VIP event by BMW, and endless crowds at public.
Btw, the new 5er looks phenomenal! :hungry:

I really like the 2002 Hommage, and I think the way it's combined elements from the 2002, the M2, and the BMW i vehicles works surprisingly well.

Hate the colour though.

Still on the fence when it comes to the 2002 Hommage. I want to love it as a modern-day interpretation of the legendary 2002 should ignite all sorts of desire for it. But, as of now, I feel wholly indifferent to it. The Hommage gives me a very robot-like vibe, and that should not be the case. It doesn't feel very organic and lacks the lithe feel that made the original 2002 what it was. The Hommage just seems unnecessarily ponderous to me.

We know the 2002 Hommage will never goes into production as a series car. Nevertheless it's interesting how this car would look as a convertible:

It actually has a E21 3-series look to it especially the racing version and doesn't in my opinion look like the 2002. It does look great though i really like it.

Here is a 3 series racing car which has a similar chiseled upright front airdam/bumper.

If we break it down. This Hommage is actually the M2. So a Cabrio is not entirely unfeasible.
All it needs (for the actual M2) is a decision. But it showcases ideas not necessarily in this final form that could be implemented within a further performance concept for the BMW Coupe models.

It was stunning to actually see It in the sunlight instead of studio lighting or even Munich Grau.
The character-line especially adds significant depth to the car that it makes you think that somebody made a mistake at the clay model stage. You will not mistake a 5er for the 7er.
